The objective of this research was to explore whether the number of CD34(+)CD38(+) cells infused affects hematopoietic reconstitution after cord blood transplantation. The number of CD34(+)CD38(+) cells in cord blood was analysed with flow cytometry after freezethawing. The body weight and time for neutrophil and platelet recovery were measured in 20 children with acute leukemia. The results showed that the median number of CD34(+)CD38(+) cells infused was 29.47 (9.85 - 325.71) x 10(4)/kg. A median time for neutrophil recovery (> 5 x 10(8)/L) in 20 patients was 18...

OBJECTIVE: Although splenectomy is a standard surgical treatment for chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, partial splenic embolization is another treatment option. We retrospectively studied the long-term results of initial and repeated partial splenic embolization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-nine patients, 15 men and 24 women, underwent initial embolization; 12 of the 39 underwent a repeated embolization. The therapeutic effects of the initial and repeated embolization were classified as a complete response if the patient's platelet count rose to more than 10 x 10(4)/ micro L without medication 1 year after the initial or repeated embolization, as a partial response if the platlet count reached 5-10 x 10(4)/ micro L under the same circumstances, or as no response...

OBJECTIVE: To find and define the effective fraction of Lycopus lucidus on coagulation. METHODS: Method of comparing turbidity, method of cutting a part of the mice tail and method of breaking glass tube. RESULTS: The two extracted fraction from lycopus lucidus F04-0A and F04-B could inhibit rats platlet aggregation in vitro and mice platelet aggregation in vivo. They could also prolong mice blood coagulation time. However, they had no effect on bleeding time...

PURPOSE: To determine the relation between vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and platlet-derived growth factor (PDGF) in the vitreous fluids from patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). SUBJECTS AND METHOD: Concentrations of VEGF and PDGF in the vitreous fluids from 53 eyes, 31 eyes in 30 PDR patients and 22 eyes in 22 non diabetes mellitus(DM) patients serving as controls, were measured by enzyme-linked immunosolvent assay. The levels of VEGF and PDGF were compared between PDR and non DM patients...

Clinicopathologically, Behçet's disease is characterized by neutrophil and platlet hyperfunction. Lesions are formed presumably because neutrophils infiltrating the affected tissue release active oxygen and lysosomal enzymes in large amounts. The mechanisms of neutrophil hyperfunction was obscure, but in recent years attention has focused on the effects of cytokines released by mononuclear cells. As more has been learned about the etiopathogenesis of Behçet's disease, novel anti-inflammatory drugs, immunosuppressants, anti-thrombotic agents, and anticoagulants have helped to achieve remarkable progress of treatment...

The Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS) is an autosomal recessive inherited disorder characterized by oculocutaneous albinism, tissue accumulation of ceroid pigment, and a mild to moderate bleeding diathesis attributed to storage-pool deficient (SPD) platlets. Patients have platelet aggregation and release abnormalities. In addition, low levels of plasma von Willebrand factor (vWF) antigen in some HPS patients have been associated with a greater bleeding tendency than would be predicted from either condition alone...

Chloroquine treatment of antigen-presenting cells (APC) was explored as a tool to investigate the processing pathway for major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II-restricted presentation of the endogenous secreted hen egg lysozyme (HEL) and transmembrane measles virus haemagglutinin (HA). We studied the mechanism of platelet injury in 20 patients receiving heparin, three of whom became thrombocytopenic. Platelets from these three patients had increased levels of IgG and C3, which correlated with the presence of thrombocytopenia; their plasma caused the release of serotonin from normal platelets at concentrations of heparin within the usual therapeutic range. This reaction required IgG and an intact classic complement pathway. The 17 patients receiving heparin in whom thrombocytopenia did not develop had normal levels of platelet-associated IgG and C3...

We obtained scintigraphic images of the neck from 100 patients with suspected cerebrovascular disease after injecting indium-111-labeled autologous platelets. One or more focuses of increased activity, implying local platelet accumulation, were seen along the course of the cervical carotid arteries in 52 patients. In 64 patients, there was a highly significant correlation between the results of scintigraphy and carotid arteriography (p = 10(6)). There was no significant correlation between the scintigraphic findings and the previous or subsequent occurrence of transient ischemic attack or cerebral infarction in the carotid circulation...

One hundred sixty-nine patients with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia are reported and compared with the 62 patients reported in 1983. Prompt recognition of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and immediate cessation of heparin administration lowered the complication and death rates from 61% (38/62) to 22.5% (38/169) and from 23% (14/62) to 12% (21/169), respectively. Platlet count and duration of heparin administration were not useful in predicting the outcome of the heparin-induced thrombocytopenia syndrome...

No other differences in clinical characteristics or coagulation parameters could be elucidated between these two subgroups. In nine patients who had 51Cr-labeled platelet survival studies, there was a good correlation between the platelet hyperactivity and shortened platelet survival...

Platelet factor 4 is a low molecular weight protein contained in the storage granules of platelets and released during aggregation with a variety of aggregating agents. In vitro, it is a potent antiheparin. This property has been used for a rapid, simple purification procedure using affinity chromatography on heparin epsilon-aminocaproic aced Sepharose. Supernatants collected from outdated platelet concentrates, or platelet extracts prepared from washed, outdate platlets themselves, are first precipitated with 50% ammonium sulfate...

This chapter has provided a review of available literature regarding alterations of hemostasis associated with CPB. The primary pathology of altered hemostasis during CPB appears to be two-fold: (1) a functional platelet defect of unclear etiology, which occurs in virtually all patients, and (2) a primary hyperfibino(geno)lytic defect which occurs in the majority of patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass. Significant thrombocytopenia does not appear to be a consistent problem, and is probably a function of perfusion technics; this may, however, be an important source of hemorrhage in some instances...

Cine-aortography was carried out in 76 patients and left ventricular catheterization via the transseptal approach was performed in 43 patients. Haemoglobin concentration, erythrocyte count, platlet count, reticulocyte count, plasma haemoglobin concentration, serum bilirubin, serum iron, serum haptoglobin and serum lactate dehydrogenase were studied in the patients...

1. Mianserin seems to have little effect on peripheral noradrenaline (NA) re-uptake mechanisms as shown by its lack of effects on the tyramine dose and NA dose/pressor response. 2. Mianserin has no effect on the hypotensive action of bethanidine. 3. Mianserin in vivo has a significant action on platlet transport (Vmax) of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), which changes toward normal values in depressive patients on the drug. This action is not observed in vitro. 4. It is possible that a metabolite of mianserin is responsible for this effect, and that this may be of therapeutic importance...
