BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women worldwide. The incidence and mortality increased globally since starting registration in 1990. Artificial intelligence is being widely experimented in aiding in breast cancer detection, radiologically or cytologically. It has a beneficial role in classification when used alone or combined with radiologist evaluation. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the performance and accuracy of different machine learning algorithms in diagnostic mammograms using a local four-field digital mammogram dataset...

Beginning around 1972 with the introduction of CT, a steady transition from analog to digital imaging in radiology took place. Here, I offer a personal perspective of the exciting multi-institutional and multidisciplinary team effort of developing digital mammography. That effort required the collaboration of visionary individuals in academic research labs, industry, and the clinical arena, catalyzed by a focussed commitment from government (NCI and The Office of Women's Health). This collaboration greatly accelerated the timeline from laboratory prototypes to clinical systems and evaluation, resulting in a new imaging modality and, later, several spinoff applications (CAD, contrast-enhanced mammography, tomosysthesis) that provide improved earlier detection of breast cancer...

Our objective is to report a new breast phantom that provides the objective assessment for three types of clinical mammography, i.e. digital mammography (DM), contrast-enhanced digital mammography (CEDM), and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT). The tissue-equivalent materials are used to represent the corresponding tissue, and the layer-by-layer structure with separate regions is designed for image quality assessment of different mammography modes. For DM imaging, substitutes for microcalcifications and fibroglandular tissue of different sizes are used to simulate the conventional breast...

Pectoralis major muscle sarcomas are extremely rare and can mimic breast lesion clinically. We report a case of poorly differentiated sarcoma of the pectoralis major muscle in a 63-year-old woman of south east Asian ethnicity presenting with a progressively increasing right breast lump. Mammography, ultrasonography (US), contrast-enhanced computed tomography, and biopsy were done to make the final diagnosis. Complete surgical excision was planned but deferred due to pulmonary metastasis, and the patient was treated with palliative chemotherapy...

PURPOSE: Screening programs use mammography as a diagnostic tool for the early detection of breast cancer. Mammogram enhancement is used to increase the local contrast of the mammogram so that the lesions are more visible in the advanced image. For accurate diagnosis in the early stage of breast cancer, the appearance of masses and microcalcification on the mammographic image are two important indicators. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of the automatic separation of images of breast tissue microcalcifications and also to evaluate its accuracy...

The ultimate goals of the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) are the reduction of reading times, the increase of diagnostic performance, and the reduction of interval cancer rates. In this review, after outlining the journey from computer-aided detection/diagnosis systems to AI applied to digital mammography (DM), we summarize the results of studies where AI was applied to DBT, noting that long-term advantages of DBT screening and its crucial ability to decrease the interval cancer rate are still under scrutiny...

Accumulating evidence shows that contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) has higher diagnostic performance than digital mammography and ultrasound, and comparable diagnostic performance as MRI, for various indications. CEM also offers certain practical advantages for patients. Nevertheless, the clinical implementation of CEM has been limited due to a range of factors. This AJR Expert Panel Narrative Review explores such factors hindering CEM implementation. These include: risks of iodinated contrast media, increased radiation exposure, indications for which CEM is not the preferred test or for which further evidence is needed, workflow adjustments when performing CEM examinations, incomplete availability of CEM-guided biopsy systems, and reimbursement challenges...

This study compares the mean glandular dose (MGD) across 2D, 3D projection and Contrast-Enhanced Digital Mammography (CEDM) mammographic techniques. The important metadata were extracted from the digital mammography console. 650 subjects were clustered based on projections, age and CBT. The MGD of 2D, 3D, and CEDM was positively correlated with CBT but inversely correlated with the age factor. This study indicate MGD of CEDM was 16% and 22% lower compared to 2D and 3D techniques, respectively.

Dedicated breast computed tomography (BCT) is an emerging breast imaging modality. The latest development has been the introduction of a spiral breast computed tomography scanner equipped with a photon-counting detector (SBCT). SBCT promises multiple advantages: Unlike conventional mammography, contrast enhanced spectral mammography (CESM: both 2D), and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT: pseudo 3D), SBCT enables 3D breast imaging without tissue overlap. SBCT achieves high isotropic spatial resolution of breast tissue enabling the assessment of both soft tissue and microcalcifications...

Currently, there is a multitude of methods for evaluating the costs and benefits of programs, tools, etc. While cost-benefit analysis (CBA) is commonly used, cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) is a more appropriate method of evaluation in clinical contexts, such as radiology practices, as CEAs use units such as life years gained as opposed to money (as is the case for CBAs). This review examines CEAs performed within the past 15 years to highlight their applications and key findings in the context of medical imaging...

Inspired by Connected-UNets, this study proposes a deep learning model, called Connected-SegNets, for breast tumor segmentation from X-ray images. In the proposed model, two SegNet architectures are connected with skip connections between their layers. Moreover, the cross-entropy loss function of the original SegNet has been replaced by the intersection over union (IoU) loss function in order to make the proposed model more robust against noise during the training process. As part of data preprocessing, a histogram equalization technique, called contrast limit adapt histogram equalization (CLAHE), is applied to all datasets to enhance the compressed regions and smooth the distribution of the pixels...
