OBJECTIVE: To report our experience on gas endoscopy as the first step of pelvi-ureteric junction (PUJ) obstruction repair when complicated by nephrolithiasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Stone formation because of urine stasis is a known complication of PUJ obstruction and an indication for its surgical repair. The undisputed results of the Anderson-Hynes dismembered pyeloplasty make it a quasi-gold standard; however, the identification and extraction of calyceal stones through the laparoscopic route can be challenging...

Translocation renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a rare aggressive malignancy in adults. A 40-year-old man presented with painless macroscopic haematuria. Initial investigations of renal ultrasound, CT scan, urine culture and urine cytology were normal. On rigid cystoscopy and pyelo-ureteroscopy, bleeding was seen from a normal-appearing right renal upper pole. An arteriovenous malformation was suspected, and laser cautery was performed. Left renal biopsy was performed due to proteinuria and suggested IgA nephropathy...

BACKGROUND: Extravesical Lich-Gregoir ureteroneocystostomy (UC) is the most widely used method for urinary reconstruction during kidney transplantation. Sometimes it is difficult to perform UC in cases with disused atrophic bladder. Pyelo-ureteral anastomosis (PUA) and uretero-ureteral anastomosis (UUA) may be preferred to UC for these patients. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 833 kidney transplant recipients operated on by our transplantation team between July 2010 and November 2014...

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic urinary tract infection (UTI) after renal transplantation (RT) is an important morbidity in transplant recipients and may cause pyelonephritis and sepsis. Surgical correction of high-grade vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) after RT is suggested, performing ureteral reimplantation or pyelo-ureteral/uretero-ureteral anastomosis. Recently, extravesical seromuscular tunnel lengthening techniques have been reported with favorable results and low complication rates. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 38 patients with post-transplantation VUR who underwent reflux correction surgery...

Duplications of the urinary collecting system and pyelo-ureteral junction obstruction (PUJO) are common, but the simultaneous presence of both anomalies is rarely encountered. In incomplete duplicated systems, PUJO usually affects the lower moiety. We present the case of a 5-year old boy with left bifid renal pelvis and hydronephosis of the lower moiety treated by robot-assisted pyeloureterostomy.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) has been adopted for pyelo-calyceal stones treatment in pediatric patients, starting from the 90's. Very recently, miniaturization of endoscopic instruments allowed less invasive procedures with low complication rate. We reviewed our experience on upper tract stone treatment utilizing two different percutaneous accesses, focusing on the recent new miniaturized devices offered for pediatric renal stones. METHODS: Patients presenting upper tract urinary stones observed from January 2011 to December 2015 and treated by percutaneous renal access were prospectively evaluated: age, sex, metabolic issues, associated abnormalities, treatment modalities, hospital stay and complication rate were recorded in a specific database...

Methods Sixty-six cats with stable CKD were prospectively enrolled, as well as normal control cats (n = 10), cats with a clinical diagnosis of Pyelo (n = 13) and cats with UO confirmed by surgical resolution (n = 11)...

Two different anastomosis techniques used to restore urinary continuity are compared in this study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective study, bi-center over a period of 5 years. We report a case of a patient whose clinical status and results of a plain chest X-ray showed digestive tract perforation, but in whom the true cause of the disease appeared to be hydronephrosis, probably caused by a tumour of the pyelo-ureteral junction. The course of the diagnostic process and causes of the false diagnosis and unnecessary laparotomy are discussed. The usefulness of computed tomography scanning with contrast in the detection of clinically unlcear abdominal disorders (i.e. radiologically "silent" perforation) is emphasised...

Nephroenteric fistulas can be secondary to different etiologies, the most common of which are pyelocolic fistulas. The absence of pathognomonic symptoms and the heterogeneity of presentation can sometimes result in a delay in diagnosis. We report on three cases: a pyelo-duodenal fistula secondary to kidney stones and subsequent pyonephrosis, a pyelocolic fistula due to inveterate ureteral stones with hydropyonephrosis, and a rare case of posttraumatic pyelocolic fistula. All patients were treated with radical nephrectomy and resection of the involved intestinal tract...

INTRODUCTION: Prune belly syndrome (PBS) presents with three main features: abdominal wall flaccidity, urological abnormalities and cryptorchidism. As a result, urologists must consider the eventual repair of the abdominal wall flaccidity and urinary tract abnormalities, and the mandatory correction of cryptorchidism, as well as decide whether to perform the procedures in a single comprehensive approach or in multiple steps. OBJECTIVES: To report experiences with comprehensive surgical management of prune belly syndrome...

AIM OF THE STUDY: Lower pole vessels are a classical cause of PUJO even in children. The "gold standard" in the management of PUJ obstructions remains a dismembered pyeloplasty as described by Anderson and Hynes. However, some authors have developed an alternative procedure to this approach with encouraging results. The aim of our study was to evaluate our preliminary results concerning laparoscopic vascular hitch for crossing vessels. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, monocentric study of all patients managed by this technique from January 2010 to December 2012...

We identified a novel elongase gene from a selected strain of the Oomycete, Pythium sp. BCC53698. Using a PCR approach, the cloned gene (PyElo) possessed an open reading frame (ORF) of 834 bp encoding 277 amino acid residues. A similarity search showed that it had homology with the PUFA elongases of several organisms. In addition, the signature characteristics, including four conserved motifs, a histidine-rich catalytic motif and membrane-associated feature were present in the Pythium gene. Heterologous expression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae showed that it was specific for fatty acid substrates, having a double bond at Δ(6)-position, which included γ-linolenic acid (GLA) and stearidonic acid (STA), and preferentially elongated the n3-18C PUFA...

There are no standardized radiological investigations in a patient with chyluria. Retrograde pyelography (RGP) is usually done to demonstrate pyelo-lymphatic reflux before invasive therapy in the form of sclerotherapy and surgery. We describe magnetic resonance-RGP using gadolinium to demonstrate pyelo-lymphatic reflux in addition to the other intra-abdominal details provided by MRI. The advantages of this technique include avoidance of ionic contrast media and radiation exposure and possibility of better understanding of the disease pathophysiology...
