Resilience is often viewed as the ability to bounce back from challenges. This conceptualization tends to be individualistic and can be less fitting for marginalized communities. Research with transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals has shown that resilience can manifest in various ways, such as developing pride in one's identity, connection to a TGD community, or advocating against oppression. Given these conflicting views, we sought to (1) describe common themes in TGD people's experience of resilience by pooling information from qualitative research; and (2) evaluate how well quantitative measures of resilience reflected the ways that TGD people define resilience in qualitative research...

PURPOSE: Transgender girls' right to participate in high school sports has been attacked by legislation banning them from doing so. This study uses open-ended survey responses among transgender high school girls to examine reasons that they choose to participate or not participate in sports. METHODS: Data come from 294 transgender girls currently in high school who answered one of two open-ended questions about sports participation as part of a larger survey on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning (LGBTQ) youth mental health...

PURPOSE: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals continue to face adversity, stigma, and inequality, especially in health care. This study aimed to characterize the experience of TGD people and partners of TGD people with regard to fertility treatment. METHODS: All TGD patients presenting to a single academic center between 2013 and 2021 were included. Baseline demographics collected included patient age, body mass index, anti-Mullerian hormone, basal antral follicle count, history of gender-affirming surgery, and/or gender-affirming hormone therapy...

PURPOSE: Stigma is a fundamental driver of HIV disparities among transgender women (TW). The gender minority stress and resilience (GMSR) measure has not been validated in Spanish-speaking, resource-limited settings. We examined the psychometric properties of a translated and abbreviated GMSR among TW in Tijuana, Mexico. METHODS: From 2020 to 2021, 152 participants were recruited through social media and venue-based sampling. We collected information on the abbreviated GMSR, psychosocial factors (e...

PURPOSE: Many studies have shown conflicting results regarding mental health among transmasculine adults or transgender men (TM). This study aimed to identify the prevalence of depression among Thai TM receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT). METHODS: All TM, over 18 years of age, who received GAHT for at least three consecutive months were invited to complete a self-report questionnaire that covered participants' demographic and clinical data. Mental health, including depression, anxiety, and quality of life (QoL), was assessed...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) practitioners offer gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) to their transgender patients living with HIV, as previous studies have shown that these patients are more likely to be virally suppressed and retained in care. METHODS: We conducted an online survey sent to 2570 HIV practitioners who attended an International Antiviral Society-USA event between 2017 and 2019. We also assessed demographics, transgender care training, comfort, prescribing practices, and knowledge...

PURPOSE: Given the limited research on health care utilization among transgender women in China, we described the use of primary health care and gender-affirming health care, and the associations between utilization of gender-affirming health care and depression and sexual risk behaviors. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey in 2017 among a purposive sample of transgender women in Shanghai, China ( N =199). We examined correlates of health care utilization and its association with depression and sexual risk behaviors with Chi-square ( χ 2 ), Fisher's exact tests, and analysis of variance...

The understanding of gender has expanded contributing to gaps in gender-affirming care. Traditional gender-affirming surgeries focus on binary results, diminishing room for affirmation of other identities. Surgeons are faced with the challenge of deciding whether a variation of gender-affirming surgery can be safely performed per request. The ethical question of when a surgeon may say yes or no to these varying requests comes after the consideration of premorbid conditions, body habitus, age, social and family support, individuals' goals, and risk assessment...

PURPOSE: The motivational model of alcohol use indicates that there is a relation between chronic stress and alcohol use, and that this relation is mediated by substance use to cope. However, this model has not been applied to the experiences of transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals. Testosterone therapy prompts the development of male secondary sexual characteristics coupled with numerous physiological changes; however, the effect of prolonged androgen exposure on transgender men's fertility remains to be fully elucidated. Multiple clinical consensuses advise assisted reproduction before hormone treatment and state that fertility preservation following androgen therapy entails the suspension of testosterone administration. Although the desire for reproduction among transgender men is prevalent, the discontinuation of gender-affirming hormone therapy poses a major challenge due to the anxiety, unease, and gender dysphoria that follow androgen withdrawal...
