Aim: For isolation of exosomes, differential ultracentrifugation and an isolation kit from a major vendor were compared. Materials & methods: 'Case study' exosomes isolated from patient-derived cells from glioblastoma multiforme and a breast cancer cell line were analyzed. Results: Transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, western blotting, and so forth, revealed comparable performance. The development of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is due to a complex interaction between the genome and the environment. Understanding how genetic differences in individuals contribute to their susceptibility to CVDs can help guide practitioners to give the best advice to achieve a favorable outcome for the patient. As genome technologies evolve, genotyping of individuals could be available to all patients using a simple saliva test. Large-scale genome-wide association studies and meta analyses have provided powerful insights into polymorphisms that may be predictive of disease and an individual's response to certain nutrients, but moving forward it is imperative that these insights can be applied in the medical setting to reduce the incidence and mortality of CVDs...

Although a marked decrease in mortality associated with bacterial infections is attributed to the discovery of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance has become a global health concern due to their misuse. A dynamic in vitro hollow-fiber system was used to study antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli using ampicillin. We optimized a peptide extraction and LC-MS protocol for identification and quantification of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in biological samples. Amphipathic AMPs were extracted with various concentrations of ethanol, methanol, acetonitrile, formic acid, acetic acid or trichloroacetic acid in water. Yields were significantly greater for extraction with 66.7% ethanol than other extraction methods. Squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) accounts for 5-7% of all malignancies. About 60% of newly diagnosed SCCHN are detected as locally advanced disease. Chemoradiation is a standard option and response rate to it is variable. Recently, a genetic classification of SCCHN has been proposed by Chung et al ., who categorized all SCCHN into four subtypes. Aim: To construct classification scores based on a combination of cancer patient plasma biomarker levels, for predicting progression-free survival. Methods: The approach is based on the optimization of the biomarker cut-off values, which maximize the statistical differences between the groups with values lower or larger than the cut-offs, respectively. An intuitive visualization of the quality of the classification score is also proposed.
