As our understanding of genetics in cancer care improves, the role of personalised medicine for patients continues to grow. With the increasing emergence of novel technologies for patient assessment, such as the evaluation of circulating tumour DNA, we must reflect on the potentially changing role that medical imaging will play in the future of optimal patient care.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to clarify the perspective of radiography science as an academic discipline. A discipline can be studied by discovering the collective use of concepts, especially core concepts. We have previously identified the core concepts as clinical practices in radiography, radiographers' profession, safe and high-quality radiation use, and technology in radiography. The relationships between these concepts have not been studied previously. In order to clarify the perspective of radiography science we have investigated further the core concepts, their interrelationships and interdependencies...

INTRODUCTION: Differentiating malignant thyroid nodules from benign ones is challenging. Sonography is a non-invasive modality that can be helpful in this regard and is far better than invasive methods like fine needle aspiration (FNA). This study aimed to assess the diagnostic value of colour Doppler ultrasonography in distinguishing malignant and benign nodules of thyroid gland. METHODS: The study involved patients with thyroiditis and thyroid nodules, who underwent sonography...

INTRODUCTION: Panoramic radiography quality can be impaired by some errors such as positioning errors. Palatoglossal air space shadow error is one of the most common positioning errors and it is due to the tongue not sticking to the roof of the palate. Techniques used to deal with this error might help prevent unnecessary radiation to patients and save them time and money. The study aimed to investigate the effects of using celluloid matrix and edible tapes (fruit leather and chewing gum) on reducing the palatoglossal air space shadow error in panoramic imaging...

INTRODUCTION: Liver cancer presents a growing global health concern, necessitating advanced approaches for intervention. This review investigates the use and effectiveness of software navigation in interventional radiology for liver tumour procedures. METHODS: In accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines, a scoping review was conducted of the literature published between 2013 and 2023 sourcing articles through MEDLINE, Scopus, CINAHL and Embase...

Proton-beam therapy (PBT) is a cutting-edge radiation therapy modality that is currently not available in Australia. Comparative photon-proton (CPP) planning is required for the medical treatment overseas programme (MTOP) and will be required for access to PBT in Australia in the future. Comparative planning brings professional development benefits to all members of the radiation therapy team. This service was also created to support future proposals for a PBT facility in Victoria. We report our experience developing an in-house CPP service at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre...

Podcasts refer to episodes of audio content that are readily available on streaming applications on smartphones or computers. This paper reports on the development of the 'Breathe In Radiography Podcast' series for radiography students and provides suggestions for evaluation. Podcast development followed a structured framework, including identification of podcast topics and expert guests, content development, audio recording, episode upload to host site and distribution. Using a framework was useful to guide development and ensure consistency across podcast episodes...

INTRODUCTION: For liver stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), the placement of fiducial markers or retained ethiodized oil by transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) provides a landmark for consistent target localisation. TACE and fiducial markers are invasive procedures that harbour additional risks. We hypothesise that liver SBRT can be accurately delivered without the use of these invasive surrogate markers. METHODS: We retrospectively identified 50 consecutive patients who underwent liver SBRT with respiratory motion management to a single lesion which exhibited retained ethiodized oil per prior TACE delivery...

Despite improvements in imaging and treatment approaches, brain metastases (BMs) continue to be the primary cause of mortality and morbidity in about 20% of adult cancer patients. This research aimed to review the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinical characteristics of BMs resulting from breast cancer (BC). A systematic review of original research articles published from January 2000 to June 2023. We selected studies that reported MRI findings of BMs in BC patients. We excluded reviews, case reports, books/book chapters, animal studies and irrelevant records...

Australian healthcare provides services to a vast culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) population. Professional interpreters are the gold standard for medical interpretation during healthcare interactions with CALD patients with limited English proficiency (LEP). However, accessing interpretation services can be difficult and may not be appropriate when timely translation is needed. Mobile translation applications (MTAs) have been suggested as a way for healthcare workers (HCWs) to provide timely translation when engaging with CALD patients...

INTRODUCTION: Brain metastases (BMs) are common in lung cancer (LC) and are associated with poor prognosis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a vital role in the detection, diagnosis and management of BMs. This review summarises recent advances in MRI techniques for BMs from LC. METHODS: This systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in three electronic databases: PubMed, Scopus and the Web of Science...

INTRODUCTION: A significant number of head computed tomography (CT) scans are performed annually. However, due to the close proximity of the thyroid gland to the radiation field, this procedure can expose the gland to ionising radiation. Consequently, this study aimed to estimate organ dose, effective dose (ED) and lifetime attributable risk (LAR) of thyroid cancer from head CT scans in adults. METHODS: Head CT scans of 74 patients (38 males and 36 females) were collected using three different CT scanners...

INTRODUCTION: To minimise the risks associated with ionising radiation, it is necessary for all staff involved to employ specific techniques to reduce radiation exposure of the patient. These techniques include using compression during examinations of the pelvic region and lumbar spine, using a gonad shield, and asking women if they are pregnant. However, some staff do not use these techniques consistently. Increasing compliance requires determining why staff are non-compliant. Thus, this study aims to qualitatively investigate why radiographers do not use these techniques...

The communicating safely policy, publicised by the catchphrase See Something, Say Something was released by the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia in 2019. It was developed to support medical radiation practitioners (MRPs) upholding the obligation to communicate urgent or unexpected findings in a timely manner, when identified on medical images. Prior to this policy being part of the professional capabilities, several untimely deaths occurred-the majority of whose causal factors could have been mitigated if imaging findings were urgently communicated by MRPs...
