We present a successful tinnitus treatment case with intensity and distress reduction in a patient subjected to bilateral 10 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC). Subjective tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ears or head when no corresponding external stimulus exists. Approximately 1%-2% of the population report severe tinnitus with daily life impairment. Sham-controlled studies have revealed benefits using rTMS in tinnitus, although the improvement is moderate or temporary, indicating the need for new strategies...

A 62-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department (ED) with the complaint of intense hematemesis. He was admitted to intensive care unit because of acute esophageal variceal hemorrhage. He underwent sclerotherapy followed by a slow infusion of intravenous octreotide. Complete heart block occured in the patient during octreotide infusion and infusion was stopped. Temporary pacemaker was placed in the patient's heart. Normal sinus rhythm was observed in the follow up one day later and the pacemaker was removed from patient...

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are monoclonal antibodies targeting cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4), programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1), or PD-1 ligand (PD-L1). ICI are approved for the treatment of malign melanoma, non-small cell lung cancer, classical Hodgkin lymphoma, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, urothelial carcinoma, and renal cell carcinoma. They can lead to long-term anti-tumor responses by deactivating the brake mechanism in the immune system. Ipilimumab, tremelimumab, pembrolizumab, nivolumab, atezolizumab, durvalumab, and avelumab are examples of ICI...

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity shows a gradual increase nowadays. Despite the introduction of multiagent treatment modalities, many patients with T2DM still do not have good results. Bariatric/metabolic surgery performed in obese patients to attain weight loss has been shown to improve T2DM. Type 1 diabetes mellitus is another type of diabetes that also shows an increase in prevalence. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the literature about the bariatric/metabolic surgical procedures performed in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes...

Tobacco consumption is a worldwide health problem threatening all, making no differentiation between gender, age, race, and cultural or educational background. Tobacco is responsible for 7 million deaths each year. Over 6 million deaths are directly related to tobacco consumption, and over 890.000 deaths involve non-smokers exposed to tobacco smoke. Although the harmful effects of cigarettes on human health have been confirmed repeatedly, still over 1 billion people worldwide are tobacco consumers, and according the World Health Organization (WHO), unless a strict action plan is implemented, tobacco-related deaths will rise to more than 8 million per year by 2030...

Objective: This study aims to compare the effects of different inhalation anesthetics on oxidative status by measuring thiol-disulfide homeostasis in laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgeries. The effect of inhaler agents on thiol-disulfide homeostasis that shows the oxidative status in laparoscopic cholecystectomy is unknown. Materials and Methods: In this study, 71 patients planned to undergo laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anesthesia were included. They were divided into two groups: desflurane (group D, n: 35) and sevoflurane (group S, n: 36)...

Objective: Baker's cyst (BC) is also known as popliteal cyst. To evaluate its effect on intra-articular pathology, it is important to have the exact volume of the cyst. As BC may change its shape due to mass effect of the surrounding anatomic structures, it is difficult to measure the exact volume of BC. This study examined the relationship between three-dimensionally measured BC volume and symptomatic intra-articular knee pathologies. Materials and Methods: The magnetic resonance (MR) images of 45 patients with symptomatic knees were retrospectively examined...

Objective: Paroxetine is a commonly prescribed SSRI that can impair erectile function in animal models via inhibition of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Tadalafil potentiates nitric oxide (NO)-mediated responses in isolated trabecular smooth muscle and penile erection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of co-administering tadalafil with paroxetine on penile NOS levels in rats. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 3 groups as control (Group-C), paroxetine (Group-P) and paroxetine plus tadalafil (Group-P+T)...

Objective: Treatment planning is primarily based on the tumor node metastasis (TNM) staging system for head and neck cancer (HNC). However, TNM does not give sufficient information about biological aggressiveness, treatment response, and prognosis. New molecular markers are needed for individualized cancer treatment. Apelin is a bioactive peptide and an endogenous ligand for the G protein-coupled receptor (APJ). Its expression is induced under hypoxic conditions. Apelin and its receptor APJ are important factors in physiological angiogenesis and may be novel targets for anti-angiogenic tumor therapies...

Our aim is to analyze the demographic and clinical features and treatment results of PGI-NHL. Materials and Methods: 286 patients diagnosed with lymphoma who referred to Ataturk University Medical Faculty Hospital between July 2001 and April 2014 were surveyed retrospectively and 22 (7.6%) PGI-NHL cases whose primary lesions were in gastrointestinal system were included...

The aim of our study was to evaluate bone health by measuring BMD after ALL treatment. Materials and Methods: The age, anthropometric measurements, and lumbar spine BMDs were recorded in 39 pediatric survivors of ALL, with no history of relapse, secondary malignancy, or transplantation. The lumbar spine BMD was measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry...

Objective: To investigate the diagnostic performance of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) in differentiating prostate cancer (PCa) from prostatitis foci. Materials and Methods: This retrospective analysis included 81 biopsy-proven lesions (44 prostatitis and 37 PCa). Normalized T2-signal intensity (nT2SI) and SI on diffusion-weighted imaging (b=1000 and 2000 mm2 /s), apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values, peak SI, SI at the end of the dynamic curves, mean peak time, mean enhancement percentage, and washout percentage obtained from dynamic contrast-enhanced imaging (DCEI) were measured...

Objective: Oxidative stress (OS) and inflammation are considered responsible for the pathogenesis of epilepsy. Prolidase has an extremely important role in proline recycling for collagen synthesis. Higher than normal proline levels have been shown to increase OS. Furthermore, prolidase activity is associated with inflammation during fibrotic process. No study has yet investigated the relationship between epilepsy and prolidase enzyme activity (PEA). In this study, we aimed to contribute to the existing literature by assessing postictal PEA levels, which are correlated with inflammation and OS, to determine whether PEA levels may be used as a biomarker for epilepsy...

Objective: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) rarely has a late onset. Late-onset SLE (LSLE) has a milder course and less organ involvement. The purpose of the present study was to compare the clinical and laboratory (lab) findings of SLE regarding age at onset. Materials and Methods: Seventy-two patients with SLE were included in the study. The age at onset was considered adult-onset SLE (ASLE) if it was <50 years and LSLE if it was ≥50 years. Lab parameters and clinical findings were compared accordingly...

Objective: Thyroid-stimulating hormone/thyrotropin (TSH) is known to induce malignancies and tissue growth of the thyroid gland. While the relationship of higher levels of TSH with advanced stages of cancer had been published in previous studies, the relationship of the tumor with the clinicopathological factors had not been completely evaluated. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between highly risky clinicopathological factors with preoperative high levels of TSH...
