OBJECTIVES: Proximal humerus fractures account for four-five % of all fractures. Shoulder hemiarthroplasty is indicated for complex fractures with high complication rates when treated with ORIF. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between the proper intraoperative tuberosity reduction, and the mid-to-long-term clinical outcome in a series of patients treated with hemiarthroplasty after proximal humerus fracture. METHODS: Forty-one patients with proximal humerus fractures who underwent hemiarthroplasty surgery between July 2009 and December 2019 were retrospectively reviewed...

OBJECTIVES: Majority of Lisfranc fracture-dislocations require anatomic reduction and rigid internal fixation to prevent debilitating sequelae. Current methods include solid screws and flexible fixations which have been in use for many years. Biointegrative screw is a newer option that has not yet been thoroughly investigated for its effectiveness for Lisfranc injuries. METHODS: The ligaments of the Lisfranc complex were resected in eight lower-leg cadaveric specimens...

OBJECTIVES: Since various medications can control the rate of fractures and subsequent complications of osteoporosis, the early detection of the disease is crucial. This systematic study aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of Singh index (SI) with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) as a benchmark standard for diagnosing osteoporosis. METHODS: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) were utilized in the current study...

OBJECTIVES: While cervical proprioception deficit has been suggested as a contributing factor to clinical consequences of chronic non-specific neck pain (CNSNP), the effect of addressing such impairments on postural control strategies has remained unexplored. The aim of this study was to compare the response of the postural control system to alteration of sensory afferents in CNSNP with asymptomatic individuals. Furthermore, we examined whether proprioceptive training would yield superior outcomes to routine physiotherapy for improvement of postural control, pain and disability...

A 19-year-old male competitive figure skater presented to clinic with a 3-year history of right ankle swelling. Exam demonstrated a ~6cm diameter mass over the medial malleolus. MRI revealed a well-circumscribed fluid-filled mass. After failing conservative management, the patient underwent surgical excision. Anatomic pathology revealed a pseudocyst with pseudosynovial metaplasia, consistent with malleolar bursitis. Competitive figure skaters can develop significant medial malleolar bursitis due to excessive shear forces from ill-fitting skates...

OBJECTIVES: The available evidence on the efficiency of well-known Schroth's exercises (SE) for correcting adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is limited, especially in combination with the asymmetric spinal stabilization exercises (ASSE) method. Therefore, we hypothesized that, first, there is no difference in the efficiency of the combined exercises (SE+ASSE) and SE alone in improving Cobb angle, angle of trunk rotation (ATR), and quality of life (QoL) in AIS. Second, there is no difference in the efficiency of SE and no intervention on corresponding variables in treating AIS...

The interosseous part of the distal tibia is one of the regions in which osteochondroma can occur. Osteochondroma typically occurs among growing children and causes gradual ankle deformity by its pressure effect on the fibula. We presented six patients (Five boys and one girl with median age of 13 years old) with distal tibial interosseous osteochondroma. They were treated by a 180̊ fibular osteotomy around its longitudinal axis just proximal and distal to the lesion. All patients were treated without any complication except for one who developed non-union of the site of the fibular osteotomy...

OBJECTIVES: Compare, retrospectively, the medium- and long-term of return to sport rates and re-injury of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in patients submitted to single-bundle (SB) compared to double-bundle (DB) technique reconstruction. METHODS: Athletes operated by SB or DB ACL reconstruction, with at least five years of follow-up at a single center, were included. The following data were collected: demographic data; competitive sports practice before the injury; previous surgery; injury/surgery to the contralateral knee; return to sports and level of the return; re-injury (time of the re-injury after the first surgery; mechanism of trauma for the re-injury; necessity of operative treatment); signs and complaints related to the knee the last clinical consultation...

OBJECTIVES: Arthroscopic Latarjet for glenohumeral stabilization has emerged as an alternative to the open approach; however, the evidence to date has questioned if this technique delivers improved outcomes. This analysis provides an assessment of the cost and utility associated with arthroscopic versus open Latarjet. Low back pain is one of the most common pathologies worldwide. When conservative treatment fails to yield good results, surgery is the recommended approach. Despite spinal fusion, some patients continue to experience persistent low back pain. This is where a series of studies come into play to detect the source of treatment failure. The use of bone scintigraphy with SPECT (single-photon emission computed tomography) in combination with computed tomography (CT) has greatly improved the anatomical localization of abnormalities found in SPECT...

OBJECTIVES: As COVID-19 will not be the last pandemic, understanding our historical response allows us to predict and improve our current practices in preparation for the next pandemic. Following the removal of the elective surgery suspension at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is unclear whether sports medicine surgery volume has returned to pre-pandemic levels as well as whether the backlog from the original suspension was addressed. The purpose of this study to observe the monthly changes in volume and backlog of knee and shoulder sports surgery one year since the original suspension...

A 41-year-old man underwent Total Knee Arthroplasty with NexGen Legacy Constrained Condylar Knee (LCCK) system to treat his nonunion of distal femur, stiff knee, and malunion of tibia plateau. The treatment involved femoral and tibial stems and PS polyethylene. As a result, his knee range of motion improved, and he no longer experienced pain. After two years, he resumed work without any signs of loosening or stiffness.

OBJECTIVES: The increasing number of total hip arthroplasties (THA) has led to increased patient demands and expectations, making it crucial to assess patients' ability to "forget" their implants in daily life. This study aimed to determine the reliability and validity of a Persian version of the Forgotten Joint Score (P-FJS) in THA patients. METHODS: The questionnaire was translated bidirectionally with the permission of the questionnaire designer. OBJECTIVES: Dislocation rate of total hip arthroplasty (THA) can be as high as 20% for patients with fracture neck of femur, which is a disastrous complication in these vulnerable patients. Numerous techniques, including bipolar arthroplasty and constrained liner, have been adopted to minimize the risk of dislocation. We aimed to evaluate the role of dual mobility Cups in treating patients with fractures of the femoral neck with high risk of postoperative dislocation due to neuromuscular instability disorders...

OBJECTIVES: The most critical step in the calculation of final limb length discrepancy (LLD) is estimating the length of the short limb after skeletal maturity(Sm). Paley's multiplier method is a fast, convenient method for calculating Sm and LLD after skeletal maturity; nonetheless, the calculation of the process of Sm and LLD in acquired type cases is complex in contrast to congenital type in this method. Notwithstanding, the multiplier method uses a variable called "growth inhibition" for the calculation process in acquired type LLD; however, its mathematical proof has not been published yet...
