INTRODUCTION: The Indigenous population of the Yanomami ethnic group in Brazil is currently facing a public health emergency due to the high number of deaths, mainly of children. Taking that into consideration, this study aims to analyze this crisis impact on the health of this population in the period between 2018 and 2022. METHODS: The data presented were collected from the report called Yanomami Mission ("Missão Yanomami") published by the Brazilian Ministry of Health and, from it, a descriptive analysis of the Indigenous individuals' health was carried out for (i) the geographical distribution; ii) the number of deaths; (iii) the child death rate; (iv) the deaths of Indigenous individuals from preventable causes; (v) the causes of preventable diseases related to hygiene and basic sanitation, and the distribution of diarrheal diseases according to age groups; (vi) evaluation of the nutritional classification; vii) the percentage (%) of the complete vaccination scheme, and (viii) the coverage of prenatal appointments of Indigenous pregnant women...

Asian Americans have been historically underrepresented in the national drug overdose discourse due to their lower substance use and overdose rates compared to other racial/ethnic groups. However, aggregated analyses fail to capture the vast diversity among Asian-American subgroups, obscuring critical disparities. We conducted a cross-sectional study between 2018 and 2021 examining Asian-American individuals within the CDC WONDER database with drug overdoses as the underlying cause of death (n = 3195; ICD-10 codes X40-X44, X60-X64, X85, and Y10-Y14) or psychoactive substance-related mental and behavioral disorders as one of multiple causes of death (n = 15,513; ICD-10 codes F10-F19)...

Stroke is a major health concern in the USA, disproportionately affecting socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. This study investigates the link between persistent poverty and stroke mortality rates in residents aged 65 and above, positing that sustained economic challenges at the county level correlate with an increase in stroke-related deaths. Persistent poverty refers to a long-term state where a significant portion of a population lives below the poverty threshold for an extended period, typically measured over several decades...

BACKGROUND: Structural racism accounts for inequity in health outcomes in ways that are difficult to measure. To conduct more actionable research and measure the impact of intervention programs, there is a need to develop indicator measures of structural racism. One potential candidate is the Adult Sex Ratio (ASR), which was identified by Du Bois as an important indicator of social life functioning over 100 years ago and has remained significant up to the present day. This study investigated the utility of this measure...

The increase in migratory flows worldwide has led to the creation of detention centers as a form of control of irregular migration. Recipient countries are responsible for protecting detainees' right to mental health, but the literature suggests that immigration detention centers are environments associated with complex mental health needs among the detainees. This study aims to approach the mental health of people detained in the immigration detention centers in Spain, a southern border of Europe. Eighty-seven migrants coming from different Latin American and African countries were interviewed using an adaptation of the Measure of Quality of Life in Detention (MQLD; Bosworth & Gerlach, 2020) to measure the perceived detention environment and The Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 (HSCL-25; Derogatis et al...

Medical mistrust is associated with poor health outcomes, ineffective disease management, lower utilization of preventive care, and lack of engagement in research. Mistrust of healthcare systems, providers, and institutions may be driven by previous negative experiences and discrimination, especially among communities of color, but religiosity may also influence the degree to which individuals develop trust with the healthcare system. The Black community has a particularly deep history of strong religious communities, and has been shown to have a stronger relationship with religion than any other racial or ethnic group...

INTRODUCTION: Trimodal therapy (TMT) is the most validated bladder-sparing treatment for organ-confined urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder (OC UCUB, namely cT2N0M0). However, it is unknown if barriers to the use of TMT or cancer-specific mortality (CSM) differences exist according to race/ethnicity. We addressed this knowledge gap. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (2004-2020), we identified OC UCUB patients aged from 18 to 85 treated with radical cystectomy (RC) or TMT...

INTRODUCTION: American Indian and Alaska Natives serve in the military at one of the highest rates of all racial and ethnic groups. For Veterans, the already significant healthcare disparities Natives experience are aggravated by barriers to accessing care, care navigation, and coordination of health care within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) between the VHA and tribal health systems. To mitigate these barriers, the VHA is developing a patient navigation program designed specifically for rural Native Veterans...

BACKGROUND: Ethnic minority women are less likely to participate in cervical cancer uteri (CCU) screening compared to native women. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) self-sampling kits for CCU screening may be a potential strategy to increase participation. This study aimed to explore views and attitudes on four different types of self-sampling kits (two brushes, a first-void urine device, and a menstrual blood device) among non-Western ethnic minority women living in Denmark. METHODS: The study was a social science single case study based on focus group interviews with 30 women aged 32-54 with non-Western background from a deprived area...

BACKGROUND: Current US hepatitis B mortality rates remain three times higher than the national target. Mortality reduction will depend on addressing hepatitis B disparities influenced by social determinants of health. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to describe characteristics of hepatitis B-listed decedents, which included US birthplace status and county social vulnerability attributes and quantify premature mortality. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 17,483 hepatitis B-listed decedents using the 2010-2019 US Multiple-Cause-of-Death data merged with the county-level Social Vulnerability Index (SVI)...

Using data from the National Survey of American Life (NSAL) (2001-2003), we examine regional differences in past-year anxiety disorder and past-year major depressive episodes among a geographically diverse sample of Black Americans (N = 3,672). We find that Black Americans residing in the South experience a mental health advantage over Black Americans living in other parts of the country, experiencing lower rates of both anxiety disorder and past-year major depression. We also examine the extent to which stress exposure, religious involvement, and neighborhood contexts help explain any regional differences...

The 2023 Supreme Court Decision from Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard and Students for Fair Admissions v. University of North Carolina threatens the current progress in achieving diversity within undergraduate and graduate medical education. This is necessary to achieve a diverse healthcare workforce, which is a key to healing historical healthcare trauma, eliminating health disparities, and providing equitable healthcare access for all communities. Although the Supreme Court decision seems obstructionist, viable opportunities exist to enhance recruitment further and solidify diversity efforts in undergraduate and graduate medical education to achieve these goals...

BACKGROUND: The management of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic depends amongst other factors on disease prevalence in the general population. The gap between the true rate of infection and the detected rate of infection may vary, especially between sub-groups of the population. Identifying subpopulations with high rates of undetected infection can guide authorities to direct resource distribution in order to improve health equity. METHODS: A cross-sectional epidemiological survey was conducted between April and July 2021 in the Pediatric Emergency Department of the Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Jerusalem, Israel...
