PURPOSE: To compare the visual outcomes and risks of suboptimal vault-related complications between immediate sequential bilateral ICL surgery (ISBICLS) and delayed sequential bilateral ICL surgery (DSBICLS). DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study. METHODS: Patients who underwent bilateral ICL implantation between November 2014 and December 2021 at the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University (Shanghai, China) were included and divided into two groups: (1) ISBICLS: both eye surgeries performed on the same day, and (2) DSBICLS: second eye surgery performed <7 days following the first one...

Retinoblastoma (RB), originating from the developing retina, is an aggressive intraocular malignant neoplasm in childhood. Biallelic loss of RB1 is conventionally considered a prerequisite for initiating RB development in most RB cases. Additional genetic mutations arising from genome instability following RB1 mutations are proposed to be required to promote RB development. Recent advancements in high throughput sequencing technologies allow a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the etiology of RB that additional genetic alterations following RB1 biallelic loss are rare, yet epigenetic changes driven by RB1 loss emerge as a critical contributor promoting RB tumorigenesis...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the dynamic transitions in diabetic retinopathy (DR) severity over time and associated risk factors in an Asian population with diabetes. DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort study METHODS: We analyzed data from 9481 adults in the Singapore Integrated Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Program (2010-2015) with linkage to death registry. A multistate Markov model adjusted for age, sex, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diabetes duration, HbA1c, and body mass index (BMI) was applied to estimate annual transition probabilities between four DR states (no, mild, moderate, and severe/proliferative) and death, and the mean sojourn time in each state...

AIMS: This study investigated the association between the frequency of screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR) versus the development of DR and corresponding medical expenses among patients newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: This longitudinal, population-based study used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (2004 to 2020) as a data source. Propensity score matching (PSM) (sex, age, comorbidities and concurrent medication use) was employed in the grouping of T2DM patients according to different frequency of DR screening...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the associations of the TIE2 gene with diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME). METHODS: This study included a Chinese cohort of 285 non-proliferative DR patients and 433 healthy controls. The DR patients were classified further into those with or without DME. Thirty haplotype-tagging single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in TIE2 were genotyped using TaqMan technology. Associations of DR and subtypes were analyzed by logistic regression adjusted for age and sex...

OBJECTIVE: To identify the risk factors for the development of diabetic retinopathy (DR), diabetic macular edema (DME), and sight threatening DR (STDR) based on a city-wide diabetes screening program. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Diabetic patients were prospectively recruited between June 2016 and December 2022. All patients underwent dilated fundus photography centered on the disc and macula or macula spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) scan. Complete medical history was documented...

Retinoblastoma stands as a paradigm of success in treating malignancies among pediatric patients. Over recent decades, the approach to managing retinoblastoma has evolved significantly, transitioning from the preservation of patients' lives to the preservation of eyes and vision while minimizing treatment-related complications. Chemotherapy, administered through diverse routes, has solidified its role as the cornerstone of retinoblastoma treatment. In addition to intravenous chemotherapy (IVC), alternative administration routes, including intraarterial (IAC), intravitreal, intracameral, and periocular delivery, have emerged as promising modalities for retinoblastoma management...

Uveal Melanoma (UM) is a rare disease, yet it is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adult patients. Despite continuous advancements and research, the risk of metastasis remains high. It is possible to stratify patients according to their risk of metastases using a variety of known risk factors. Even though there is no gold standard for the prognostication of patients with uveal melanoma, it is becoming increasingly clear that combining histo-pathological, patient-related and molecular prognostic markers allows a more accurate prediction of the metastatic risk than by using one parameter...

In this review, we aim to provide an overview of the five most common malignant eyelid tumors with current treatment recommendations based on international guidelines. Particular attention is paid to the clinicopathological correlation and the update with regard to adequate treatment. Newer systemic therapies enrich the existing treatment options, of which complete tumor excision remains the most important therapeutic measure.

PURPOSE: Intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (IVLBCL) is an extremely rare, aggressive, multi-system disease that can affect the eye. We describe the ophthalmic presentation, multimodal imaging and treatment response of uveal IVLBCL. METHODS: Review and case report. RESULTS: Twenty-five published cases of IVLBCL involving the eye including our own were identified. Of these, 15 patients (60%) had clinically-detectable intraocular involvement, 6 (24%) had extraocular ophthalmic involvement only and 4 (16%) had subclinical, undiagnosed intraocular involvement that was retrospectively detected on post-mortem ocular histopathology...

IMPORTANCE: Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) is a spectrum of malignancies that generally includes conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). OSSN can be treated with topical therapies including interferon α-2b (IFN), mitomycin C (MMC), or 5-fluorouracil 1% (5FU). Recently, due to unavailability of IFN and toxicity associated with MMC, therapy has shifted towards 5FU. OBJECTIVE: Herein, we compare the use of 5FU 1% as a primary versus (vs) secondary treatment regimen in eyes with moderate to extensive OSSN...
