BACKGROUND: Chronic constipation (CC) is a severe symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD), with an unclear pathogenesis. Abnormalities of the enteric nervous system (ENS) and/or intestinal epithelial barrier (IEB) may be pathophysiologically relevant in PD patients with CC.
