We reviewed 24 kidney transplantat recipients (KTRs) who had radiologically confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. Enrolled KTRs were divided into a severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-vaccination (+) group (n = 18) and a vaccination (-) group (n = 6). Clinical outcomes of the two groups including death, pulmonary outcome, and renal outcome were compared. COVID-19 pneumonia was worse in vaccination (-) KTRs. Two out of six vaccination (-) KTRs needed continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and mechanical ventilator (MV) and expired...

Lyme disease is a tick-borne infection in Korea. Here, clinical samples were collected from a 72-year old patient, with sudden onset of fever on April, 2018. The patient was passed away after 3rd day of doxycycline administration. The molecular diagnostic tests, nested polymerase chain reaction targeting 5S-23S rRNA intergenic spacer region (IGS) and multilocus sequence typing (MLST), showed positive for Borrelia afzelii from blood. Further, mutations in both 5S - 23S IGS and pepX allele of MLST were determined...

Although Streptococcus pneumoniae has been one of the most common bacterial causes of disease in humans, its impact has been blunted by the broad use of vaccines. Since 2018, the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease in Korea decreased with effective pneumococcal vaccines but is on the rise again recently. In this paper I will review the epidemiology, risk factors, and antibiotic resistance of invasive pneumococcal disease after the introduction of the pneumococcal vaccine in Korean adults.

BACKGROUND: CD14 recognizes lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and presepsin is a fragment of soluble CD14. Still, it remains uncertain whether Gram-negative bacteria induce higher presepsin levels than other microorganisms. To address this question, this study aimed to analyze presepsin levels based on microorganisms isolated in blood cultures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a single-center study comprising suspected sepsis patients enrolled from July 2020 to September 2020...

BACKGROUND: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) is dominating coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) worldwide. The waning protective effect of available vaccines against the Omicron variant is a critical public health issue. This study aimed to assess the impact of the third COVID-19 vaccination on immunity against the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.1 strain in older individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adults aged ≥60 years who had completed two doses of the homologous COVID-19 vaccine with either BNT162b2 (Pfizer/BioNTech, New York, NY, USA, BNT) or ChAdOx1 nCoV (SK bioscience, Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea, ChAd) were registered to receive the third vaccination...

Norovirus infection in children on treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia can lead to severe morbidity due to chronic viral shedding, malabsorption, failure to thrive, and interruption of chemotherapy. We had four children with norovirus diarrhoea in eight years period in our pediatric oncology unit. Three children under two years of age had chronic noroviral shedding and persistent diarrhoea, probably due to poor adaptive immune responses. Two of those children didn't respond to nitazoxanide and succumbed to the illness...

An online survey was conducted in Korea to identify the unmet medical needs of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (PLWH). Participants (n = 105) were mostly male (93.3%), aged >40 years (75.2%), and treated for ≥6 years post-diagnosis (61.9%). Most PLWH (71.4%) were very satisfied/satisfied with their HIV management. Areas of concern were quality of life (QoL) and mental health. Characteristics of a long-term therapeutic agent were 'low risk of resistance', 'high long-term viral suppression efficacy', and 'high degree of safety'...

Although adult immunization is different from children's, vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) for adults are significant in that they are more severe and cause more deaths than VPDs for children. Additionally, the emergence of new vaccines and an increase in the elderly population are increasing demands for policy support for adult vaccination. Accordingly, in this paper, I will look at the characteristics of adult immunization, policies that have been implemented in Korea, and considerations.

Late-onset Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) can be developed in solid organ transplant (SOT) patients. Granulomatous P. jirovecii pneumonia (GPCP) can occur in immunocompromised patients, but has rarely been reported in SOT recipients. The diagnosis of GPCP is difficult since the sensitivity of sputum and bronchoalveolar lavage is low and atypical patterns are shown. A 60-year-old man, who had undergone renal transplantation 24 years ago presented with nodular and patchy lung lesions. He was asymptomatic and stable...
