Introduction: Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne infection endemic in 98 countries. Its cutaneous form (CL) causes skin lesions on exposed parts of the body and may lead to scarring. The numbers of imported cases of CL are increasing in Europe but the incidence of CL importation in Poland is unknown. Material and methods: A list of all patients diagnosed with CL at the Department in the years 2005-2017 was obtained. The study presents their data including age, sex, areas visited, purpose of travel, time from the onset of symptoms to correct diagnosis, appearance of lesions, results of impression smears and PCR, and superinfection, if detected, as well as treatment methods and their outcomes...

Introduction: Onion (Allium cepa) handling can induce contact dermatitis, rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma. However, only sporadic reports exist on allergic reactions to onion consumption. Aim: We describe herein a case of a 35-year-old man who had an episode of anaphylaxis following cooked onion ingestion. We evaluated onion-specific IgE, the possible cross-reactivity between onion and peach and lymphocyte proliferation in response to onion. Material and methods: Specific IgE was evaluated using two techniques: skin test and ImmunoCAP technology...

Introduction: It is known that serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S) levels are low in patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria. Aim: In the study, the effect of the drug on the DHEA-S serum levels and its correlation with the remission and relapse times of the disease was investigated. Material and methods: Fifty-seven patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria who were referred to our hospital and 20 healthy volunteers were included in the study...

Introduction: Bronchial asthma is one of the frequent chronic diseases in elderly persons. Global data show that 6.5-17% of the elderly suffer from asthma. However, there are no Polish data available on asthma prevalence in this group. Aim: This article is a retrospective analysis of the Polish Multicentre Study of Epidemiology of Allergic Diseases (PMSEAD) results aimed at assessing prevalence and clinical characteristics in the elderly. Material and methods: The study was conducted in 1998-1999 in 11 research centres in Poland, including the Lodz centre...

Introduction: The literature describes the influence of venom immunotherapy (VIT) on the subpopulation of T regulatory cells (CD4+ CD25+ Foxp3+) and the synthesis of IL-10, TGF-β1 as well as many other cytokines at various times after immunotherapy. Aim: To assess changes in the percentage of cells of CD4+ and CD25+ in peripheral blood and serum concentrations of IL-10, IL-21 and TGF-β1 in the early stages of VIT. Material and methods: The study included 18 patients who were allergic to wasp venom and who in the past underwent systemic anaphylactic reaction after stinging, meeting the criteria to qualify for VIT...

Introduction: Genital warts are benign epithelial tumours caused by human papilloma viruses (HPV), and are sexually transmitted. Genotyping of genital HPV bears great clinical significance in terms of treatment planning, follow-up, and prevention strategies. Aim: To evaluate the distribution of high-risk HPV infection types in patients diagnosed with anogenital warts. Material and methods: A total of 66 patients with anogenital warts were enrolled...

Introduction: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with immunologic etiology. Aim: To investigate the levels of the proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin 23 (IL-23) and IL-17 in patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis with concomitant metabolic syndrome. Material and methods: This study included 60 patients with severe psoriasis. Results: In patients with arterial hypertension concomitant with psoriasis, no statistically significant differences in cytokine levels were observed...

Introduction: Alopecia areata (AA) is considered an autoimmune disorder characterized by patchy loss of hair from the scalp and other body parts. Many patients develop the disease in childhood. Aim: To answer the question whether abnormal production of some proinflammatory cytokines (IL-2, IL-6, IL-15, IL-17A and IFNγ) in children with AA may facilitate the development or progression of the disease. Material and methods: The study group consisted of 42 children with AA, the control group - 37 healthy children...

Introduction: Topical ivermectin is an effective treatment for inflammatory papulopustular rosacea in adults. Positive therapeutic effects of ivermectin due to its potential anti-inflammatory properties could be achieved in the other facial dermatoses. Aim: To assess the efficacy of topical ivermectin 1% cream therapy in mild and moderate perioral dermatitis (PD), seborrheic dermatitis (SD) and acne vulgaris (AV). Material and methods: The study comprising 20 patients diagnosed with PD (8), SD (8) and AV (4) was conducted between November 2016 and July 2017...

Introduction: An increase in cerebral pulsatility index (PI), measured by transcranial Doppler, reflects the presence of cerebral microangiopathy. A decrease in distance between skin capillaries (DISTANCE) and an increase in the ratio between the area of capillaries and total area of examined skin (COVERAGE), revealed by capillaroscopy, reflects skin microangiopathy. However, little is known about the association between the cerebral and skin microvasculature function in patients at risk of microcirculatory dysfunction...

Introduction: This was a sub-group analysis of patients with uncontrolled persistent allergic asthma (AA) in the healthcare setting of the Czech Republic, from a global non-interventional, 2-year post-marketing, observational eXpeRience registry. Aim: To evaluate the real-life effectiveness and safety of omalizumab. Material and methods: Patients with uncontrolled persistent AA (currently defined by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) as uncontrolled severe AA) who started omalizumab treatment 15 weeks before inclusion in the registry were analysed for physicians' global evaluation of treatment effectiveness (GETE), asthma symptoms, corticosteroid use, exacerbation rate, asthma control, quality of life, healthcare utilisation and safety during a 24-month observation period...

Introduction: The Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a non-inflammatory, heritable connective tissue disorder divided into 13 types according to the 2017 International Classification of the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes. One of the subtypes of EDS, classical (cEDS), is characterized by joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility and atrophic scars, which are major criteria of cEDS. Aim: In this study, the first in Central Eastern Europe, 44 patients were investigated. All of them were tested for COL5A1 mutations with direct DNA sequencing...

REVIEW
Joanna Wojczal, Grzegorz Kozera, Piotr Luchowski, Jolanta Neubauer-Geryk
Giant cell arteritis is the most common systemic vasculitis. It selectively affects large- and medium-sized arteries. Arterial wall inflammation leads to luminal occlusion and tissue ischemia, which cause the clinical manifestations of this vasculitis. Susceptible sites include the vascular bed of the cranial nerves and scalp including the temporal arteries, optic nerve, masseter muscles, and the posterior circulation of the central nervous system. Involvement can extend to the aorta and its primary and secondary branches, including the subclavian and axillary arteries, which leads to upper-extremity ischemia...
