Pharmacogenomics is the study of how genes affect a person's response to medications. This science has given rise to the practice of "precision health care," which combines pharmacology (the study of medication) and genomics (the study of genes and their functions) to inform a more personalized approach. Related considerations include which medications to prescribe to different individuals and what doses will have the most therapeutic effects (with the fewest side effects). A case of recalcitrant depression and anxiety (in the context of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune disease) serves as the basis for discussion of psychopharmacogenomics to inform a more effective treatment approach for psychiatric symptoms...

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) in the Netherlands have been allowed to perform the role of coordinating practitioner (CP) since 2018. This role is reserved for mental health care specialists who are trained and qualified at the master's degree level. Earlier studies have not addressed how PMHNPs perform that role and what mechanisms and contextual factors determine their performance. This understanding could help optimize their performance in this role and promote effective deployment of PMHNPs in mental health care...

BACKGROUND: Prematurity represents a critical health disparity. It is important to note that late preterm (LPT) infants comprise the majority of preterm births, yet they are the least studied within the premature population. Evidence-based practice guidelines are now a decade old, indicating the potential need for review and revision. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review proposed the assessment of sociodemographic characteristics of LPT infants, clinical practice standards, and associated hospital readmission rates, mortality, and morbidity to determine the need for revision of evidence-based practice guidelines for these infants...

Clinicians report experiencing bias at work. Although previous studies have characterized these experiences among trainees and clinical faculty, ours is the first to describe experiences of bias within a multidisciplinary hospital medicine group. In our study, 82.5% of surveyed nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs), and physicians reported experiencing gender, racial, or other forms of bias in the workplace. In addition to women reporting higher rates of gender bias and Asian/Black/Latinx/multiracial/other race respondents reporting higher rates of racial bias, half of participants reported experiencing other forms of bias related to gender expression, perceived sexual orientation, body habitus, age, accent, country of origin, or perceived socioeconomic status...

New graduate neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs) need more than an orientation; they need mentoring to facilitate successful role transition and enhance job satisfaction. A gap exists in the literature about mentoring participant training and launching of successful programs for NNPs. This article provides an overview of the development and evaluation of a nurse practitioner (NP) mentoring workshop before the start of a formalized mentoring program. Workshop participants attended a half-day education event with an emphasis on mentoring program expectations, mentor and mentee roles, and effective communication...

Medical aid in dying (MAID) is a practice that has been expanding in the United States over the past few decades. As it becomes a viable option for a growing portion of the American population, nurse practitioners (NPs) need to be prepared to engage in conversation with patients about the practice. Although historically only physicians were able to participate in MAID, the role has recently expanded to include additional advanced practice providers, including NPs. Reviewing the history of MAID and examining how current legislation affects clinical practice can support the NP's ability to educate and counsel patients about the option...

BACKGROUND: Nurse practitioner (NP) faculty attitudes toward interprofessional education (IPE) can be barriers to the shift in culture and successful implementation of IPE into nursing curricula. A paucity of studies exist comparing faculty attitudes of IPE with different educational modalities. PURPOSE: The purpose of this research is to compare NP faculty attitudes toward IPE between IPE experiences and educational modalities in NP academic programs. METHODOLOGY: A quantitative cross-sectional comparative design was used...

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an inherited, autoinflammatory disease with a high prevalence in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean populations including Turks, Iranian, Spanish, Sephardic Jews, Arabs, and other Mediterranean ethnic groups. Autoinflammatory diseases are genetically predetermined disorders with multisystem effects primarily caused by defects in innate immunity. Although primarily known for an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance, there are increasing case reports associated with single Mediterranean fever (MEFV) mutation or dominant transmission...

Meaningful job recognition is a pillar for sustaining healthy work environments and proven beneficial for job satisfaction and retention. However, few dedicated award recognition programs exist for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), and no available literature evaluates the impact on professional practice, sense of belonging, and job retention or satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to introduce a novel award recognition program for APRNs and physician associates (PAs) in a large academic medical system and evaluate it's impact on job satisfaction, retention, and sense of belonging...

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest in nurse practitioner (NP) turnover with some reports indicating it is as high as 15% annually. However, there is a lack of generalizability and other conceptual weaknesses in the literature. These weaknesses support the development of a framework to operationalize NP turnover for administrators to develop workplace initiatives to reduce turnover. PURPOSE: To describe the demographic and job characteristics of four NP voluntary turnover groups (i...

As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of sequencing of the human genome and the rapid integration of genetics in health care, we pause to reflect on the status of genomic competency in nursing. The literature provides evidence that nurses do not feel prepared or confident in genomics. Genomic education for nurses and other health care professionals can support access and equity in the integration of genomics into practice. Resources are provided to support genomic education and clinical support.

BACKGROUND: Newly graduated nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) benefit from transition-to-practice (TTP) support to move successfully into practice. Transition-to-practice programs (i.e., onboarding programs and fellowships/residencies) hold promise for improving workforce outcomes. PURPOSE: The purpose of this scoping review was to describe the literature regarding NP/PA TTP programs. METHODOLOGY: Using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, a specific approach for systematically conducting reviews, publications from January 1990 to May 2022 were included for review if they addressed fellowships/residencies or onboarding programs for NPs or PAs...
