BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Epiretinal membrane (ERM) formation, a common complication following pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) repair, is associated with vision loss and metamorphopsias. Although laser retinopexy is generally associated with ERM formation, the correlation between the extent of laser treatment and ERM formation during PPV is not well established. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors associated with ERM formation including extend of endolaser retinopexy after PPV for primary RRD...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to evaluate retinal microvascular changes and visual outcomes following rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) repair using wide-field swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (WF SS-OCTA). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 116 eyes of 111 patients with macula-off ( n = 68) or macula-on ( n = 48) RRD treated with a single successful procedure, 79 fellow eyes, and 183 eyes of control patients imaged with WF SS-OCTA (3 ×3, 6 ×6, and 12 ×12 mm images)...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We investigated the reliability of near-infrared reflectance (NIR) imaging as a method of assessing severity of diabetic retinopathy (DR). PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred ninety-five NIR images were reviewed by two graders for the number of hyporeflective foci, presence or absence of vascular abnormalities, and presumptive DR stage; these were correlated to fundus photography-defined DR stage. Interrater reliability was confirmed via one-way random effects model of intraclass correlation coefficients...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Among secondary intraocular lens (IOL) techniques, scleral fixated IOLs (SFIOLs) offer advantages in cases without capsular support. In this article, we compare outcomes between two types of Gore-Tex scleral sutured IOLs with the Yamane technique. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was a retrospective chart review of patients who underwent SFIOL implantation. RESULTS: Analysis revealed a statistically significant improvement in final postoperative visual acuity (VA) for sutured SFIOLs ( P < 0...

Indicated for colorectal cancer for decades, bevacizumab has been widely used off label to treat retinal diseases, and the benefits of its use, specifically in neovascular age-related macular degeneration, have been demonstrated in multiple clinical trials. The intravitreal delivery of bevacizumab requires it to be aseptically repackaged into individual syringes by compounding pharmacies for use in the eye. Although the repackaging process is permitted by the US Food and Drug Administration, the resultant product does not meet the specific standards of products approved for use as ophthalmic injectables nor is the parenteral innovator solution compliant with ophthalmic standards...

A 37-week-old girl underwent ophthalmic examination. Born at 32 weeks, the infant weighed 680 grams and received high-flow nasal cannula for respiratory distress of the newborn. Dilated fundus examination of the right eye revealed an atypical chorioretinal coloboma; the left eye revealed hyperpigmentary changes in the macula. Fluorescein angiography of both eyes showed retinal vascularization to zone II. Genetic testing revealed a heterozygous variant of uncertain significance in the catenin Alpha 1 (CTNNA1) gene...

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is an irreversible and progressive neurological disorder. A 20-year-old woman with SSPE presented with a decline in visual acuity. Anterior segment was evaluated with slit lamp and in vivo confocal microscopy, revealing the presence of dendritiform keratic precipitates and +2 cells in the anterior chamber. In fundus examination, white-yellowish lesions involving the macula and periphery were observed, which gradually progressed into atrophy over time. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging showed progression to atrophy of moth-eaten shaped cavities including all retinal layers due to necrotizing retinitis...

Alport syndrome is characterized by type IV collagen network disruptions leading to renal, auditory, and ocular manifestations. This case report details a 24-year-old man with Alport syndrome who developed a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment following macular hole repair. The patient underwent a successful vitrectomy and internal limiting membrane peel for macular hole repair but returned with vision loss due to retinal detachment five weeks later, which necessitated a combined scleral buckle and vitrectomy...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The objective was to evaluate factors associated with clinical presentation of uveal melanoma (UM) during the initial two years of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a multi-site, retrospective cohort study of patients treated for uveal melanoma during the first (early) and second (late) year of the pandemic compared with the year prior (control). RESULTS: A total of 48, 67, and 75 patients were in the control, early, and late cohorts, respectively...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Color fundus photography is an important imaging modality that is currently limited by a narrow dynamic range. We describe a post-image processing technique to generate high dynamic range (HDR) retinal images with enhanced detail. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective, observational case series evaluating fundus photographs of patients with macular pathology. Photographs were acquired with three or more exposure values using a commercially available camera (Topcon 50-DX)...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to monitor variables via spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and identify the most relevant biomarkers related to best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in radiation retinopathy (RR). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A post-hoc analysis of the two-year Ranibizumab for Radiation Retinopathy (RRR) trial analyzed vision and OCT parameters including intraretinal fluid, ellipsoid zone (EZ) disruption, retinal pigment epithelium atrophy, hard exudates, retinal hemorrhage, retinal neovascularization, and subfoveal fluid...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Dexmedetomidine (Precedex® ) has been linked to depressive hemodynamic effects and increased length of stay in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) when used in ambulatory phacoemulsification procedures. We aimed to determine the prevalence and impact of dexmedetomidine use during ambulatory vitreoretinal procedures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study involved 9,666 adult vitrectomies. Cases were divided into groups by anesthesia type: general anesthesia (GA) and monitored anesthesia care (MAC)...
