The present study aims to inventory the metazoan parasites of Tetragonopterus argenteus from the Lima Campos weir, municipality of Icó, Ceará, Brazil and to analyze the influence of the host size and sex on the prevalence and parasitic abundance. A total of 359 metazoan parasites specimens were collected from 54 specimens of T. argenteus, presenting a mean intensity of 7.04 parasites/fish and prevalence of 94%. A richness of 10 parasite taxa were recorded, taxonomically classified into the following groups: Monogenea (n=1), Digenea (n=2) and Nematoda (n=7)...

Aedes mosquito is the most common arboviral vector in the tropic and subtropic regions that it was dispersed in high-rise buildings up to many storeys. A study reported that similar condition in Indonesia is still limited, although the high-rise buildings are also growing rapidly throughout the country. This study aimed to understand the dispersal and density index of Aedes mosquitoes among storey buildings at the campus of Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among four of nine-storey buildings...

Ectoparasitic leeches have many biologically active substances in their body, which are able to show various therapeutic effects, which makes them very relevant in the study. Among them, the most common are medicinal leeches: Hirudo verbana, Hirudo medicinalis and Hirudo orientalis. They are listed in the Red Book as a vulnerable species, so their population is mostly supported in biolabs. Therefore, the search for different methods of their preservation is relevant. The aim of the work was to test the effect of the duration of rest and feeding of animals for re- reproduction, which will increase their population...

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is common gastrointestinal disorder with prevalence globally. Parasitic infection is one of the major risk factors for developing irritable bowel syndrome. We aim to estimate the incidence of Blastocystis sp. among IBS patients and nurse staff so as to assess the association between IBS and the Blastocystis infection by using microscopic and molecular techniques. Stool samples were collected from 136 people in the IBS group, 84 participates in the control group and 30 in nurse staff...

Buffaloes are one of the most popular domestic ruminants, reared globally for milk and meat. Gastrointestinal (GI) parasitism in these hosts possesses a critical warning factor that severely limits the growth, reproductive performance, and milk production. Thus, the current study aimed to assess the prevalence and diversity of GI parasites in buffaloes in Ratnanagar Chitwan in central Nepal. The fresh faecal samples (n=300) of buffaloes (150 from captive and 150 from semi-captive) were collected and immediately preserved in 2...

Cystic echinococcosis is a major parasitic and zoonotic disease and surgery is the most common treatment of this disease which carries the risk of intraoperative leakage and recurrence. Using scolicidal agent to inactivate cyst contents reduces the risk of recurrence. Considering side effects of available scolicidals and growing interests on natural pharmaceuticals, the present study aimed to evaluate toxicity of cinnamaldehyde (CA), the main component of cinnamon essential oil, and a developed nanoemulsion of cinnamaldehyde (nano-CA) on protoscoleces of hydatid cyst...

Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are common in developing countries, particularly in countries witnessing conflicts and humanitarian crises like Yemen. Type-2 diabetics are among the population categories most vulnerable to a variety of infections, including IPIs. Therefore, this study determined the prevalence and risk factors associated with IPIs among Yemeni type-2 diabetics in Sana'a city. This hospital-based, cross-sectional study recruited 389 type-2 diabetics seeking healthcare in Sana'a from December 2019 to February 2020...

There are some doubts about the exact relationship between neglected infectious diseases (NIDs) and COVID-19 disease, which remains to be clearly defined. The present review summarized the effect of parasitic infections as the risk factors or protective agents in the COVID-19 pandemic. Parasites could proficiently modulate immune responses. Thus, parasitic infections could have a different impact on the incidence and clinical severity of COVID-19 in different regions of the world. Also, restoring programs to prevent, treat, and control NIDs, in particular helminths, could help in reducing the incidence and mortality of COVID-19 in endemic areas and help to increase vaccination effectiveness...

Malaria is a deadly parasitic disease transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes. One of the most extensive malaria control measures proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO), which has received better attention in recent years, is the biological control of Anopheles mosquitoes. In this concept, Wickerhamomyces anomalus yeast has received more attention from researchers in this field. In the present review, we have investigated the anti-malaria effect of Wickerhamomyces anomalous. In the present review, we searched PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, Embase, Google Scholar, Science Direct, and Wiley databases for relevant articles...

Primary muscular hydatidosis is an infrequent parasitic infection, caused by Echinococcus granulosus. We report 2 cases of female patients with diagnosis of primary muscular hydatidosis of the thigh. Both hail from an endemic area for hydatidosis, and had no pulmonary, hepatic, or systemic involvement. Cyst extraction was performed after the patients were given hypertonic solution, and antiparasitic treatment.

Greater cane rats (Thryonomys swinderianus) are important sources of bushmeat in southern Nigeria. Here, we collected and examined intestinal helminth parasites of these rats sold at Omagwa bushmeat market, Rivers State, Nigeria. Twelve intestinal tracts of T. swinderianus were purchased from December, 2020 to February, 2021, and transported to the laboratory for examination. Each sample was incised and its contents examined in 0.9% normal saline solution. Parasites encountered were washed in same solution, fixed in 70% ethanol and subsequently identified using taxonomical keys...

Information on the prevalence on Rickettsia spp. in free-ranging mustelids and their specific ectoparasites is scarce. However, stone martens (Martes foina), pine martens (Martes martes) and European badgers (Meles meles) are common predators in many regions of Poland. In the present study we used tissue fragments to determine Rickettsia prevalence in these carnivores by molecular biology techniques. In addition, we included a data on several species of invertebrates that commonly feed on badgers.
