BACKGROUND: Multiple vaccines were introduced during 2020-2021 to combat Covid-19 pandemic, being one of the successful vaccine programmes in the present era. Very few studies are available on status of chronic urticaria (CU) post Covid-19 vaccination. AIM: The aim of this study was to study effect of Covid-19 vaccination on our urticaria cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, case records of CU patients registered in urticaria clinic, who had received any type of Covid-19 vaccine during the interval of March 2021-2022 were retrieved...

Hypereosinophilic syndrome is a myeloproliferative disorder characterized by abnormal accumulation of eosinophils in the blood or peripheral tissues. It is uncommonly seen in children. We describe a 14-year-old girl diagnosed with idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome presenting with recurrent, painful oral and genital ulcers, hepatosplenomegaly along with consistently high eosinophil count and leucocytosis. Genetic studies showed negative for FIPIL-PDGFRA fusion gene. Mucosal ulcers were recalcitrant to conventional therapy and responded well to thalidomide...

Nahida N Bhat, Yasmeen J Bhat
Leeches are hermaphroditic parasites of phylum Annelida and class Hirudinea. A minority of these are sanguinivorous and the cause of human morbidity. Historically, leeches have been used for medicinal purposes with the earliest recorded being 1500 BC. Medicinal leeches use their suction discs for locomotion, adhesion to the host, and, in the case of the anterior disc, also for blood ingestion. Dermoscopy is a new non-invasive tool that can help in the diagnosis of miscellaneous skin conditions. The new dermoscopic sign of leech bite i...

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous manifestations of hematological neoplasms can be divided into three broad categories - direct infiltration, paraneoplastic conditions, and those due to the treatment of hematological cancers. OBJECTIVES: To study the frequency and patterns of mucocutaneous manifestations in patients with hematolymphoid neoplasms and those due to chemotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was an observational study done with 172 patients...

BACKGROUND: Cluster of differentiation 44 (CD44) is a cell surface adhesion protein involved in the progression and metastasis of oral squamous cell carcinoma. The current study aims to evaluate the expression of CD44 in oral lichen planus and related lesions and thereby assess the relative risk of malignant transformation of these lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of 10 oral lichen planus (Group 1), 10 oral lichenoid lesions (Group 2), 8 with oral lichen planus with dysplasia (Group 3), and 5 with lichenoid dysplasia (Group 4) were included in the study...

BACKGROUND: A genotype study of filaggrin gene loss-of-function mutations in central India can provide valuable insights into the prevalence and association of these mutations with atopic dermatitis (AD) and ichthyosis vulgaris (IV) in the region. The FLG R501X and 2282del4 are both genetic variants in the human gene called filaggrin gene ( FLG ), which encodes a protein that plays an important role in the formation and maintenance of the skin barrier. In this study, we determined the FLG R501X and 2282del4 variants association with both AD and IV in Central Indian populations...

Chromoblastomycosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by a variety of dematiaceous fungi. Fonsecaea (F.) pedrosoi is the most common causative agent. Majority of cases have been reported from tropical and subtropical regions with rural and agricultural background. It is a chronic disease with low incidence of complications but is very refractory to therapies. This is a case series of 22 cases of chromoblastomycosis from two health-care facilities in India. Information regarding the history, clinical presentations, diagnostic methods, therapy, and outcome of treatment were retrieved...

BACKGROUND: Impact of COVID-19 pandemic has been immense. An innocent casualty of this disaster is medical education and training. Dermatology, which primarily deals with out-patient services, medical and surgical interventions, and in-patient services, was one of the worst hit. The National Medical Commission of India has implemented competency-based medical education (CBME) in Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprosy since 2019. The new curriculum relies on acquiring practical and procedural skills, training skills in research methodology, professionalism, attitude, and communication...
