PURPOSE: To describe the changes after frenectomy concerning mobility and functions of the tongue. METHODS: Participants were 53 subjects who had never undergone speech therapy or lingual frenulum surgery. A specific lingual frenulum protocol with scores was used by speech-language pathologists when there was evidence of frenulum alteration. Ten subjects had abnormal frenulum and were referred to an otolaryngologist for frenectomy. After surgery, the subjects were re-evaluated using the same protocol...

The cochlear implant (CI) represents the most important advance in the treatment of individuals with severe to profound bilateral hearing loss who do not benefit from hearing aids. Children who receive the CI during the critical period of neuroplasticity of the auditory system, when combined with speech therapy, have the chance to develop the auditory and linguistic skills similarly to their normal hearing peers. Two cases of implanted children are presented in this study, and one of them was not enrolled in a formal aurioral therapeutic program since the implantation surgery...

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is the inability to convert phenylalanine into tyrosine, causing toxic effects to the central nervous system. Traditionally, in the treatment of PKU, breastfeeding is replaced by formula milk. This study verified the effects of breastfeeding as a source of phenylalanine on the development of children with PKU. Participants were ten infants with PKU who started treatment with the introduction of formula before 30 days of life, and maintained breastfeeding for at least 30 days after the start of procedures...

PURPOSE: To analyze the influence of weight, height and body mass index in the axial tongue force. METHODS: Medical records with data from 44 subjects aged between 20 and 37 years, 11 (25%) males and 33 (75%) female, were analyzed. The investigated information were weight, height, result of clinical evaluation for tongue force (lingual tonus) and instrumental assessment of axial tongue force, which was accomplished by using the FORLING. Data was statistically analyzed...

PURPOSE: To identify and characterize the presence of body pains in popular singers, to observe the differences in the reported pains according to gender, and to relate with data regarding vocal behavior and usage in this population. METHODS: A self-explanatory questionnaire was applied to 100 popular singers (50 men and 50 women), in order to collect information about personal identification, voice use and presence of pains. Pains were divided into two groups: proximal pains (TMA, tongue, throat, nape, shoulders, neck, and pain during speech), and distal pains (arms, back/column, chest, hands, ear, and headache)...
