BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) necessitating mechanical ventilation (MV) presents a serious challenge for intensivists. Laboratory blood tests reflect individual physiological and biochemical states, and provide a useful tool for identifying patients with critical condition and stratifying risk levels of death. This study aimed to determine the prognostic role of initial routine laboratory blood tests in these patients. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 190 aSAH patients requiring MV in the neurosurgical intensive care unit from December 2019 to March 2022...

Hemolytic anemia after thoracic aortic surgery is rare. A 69-year-old female patient, who underwent ascending aorta replacement for acute type A aortic dissection 7 years ago, was transferred from another hospital due to hemolytic anemia necessitating regular blood transfusions. After engaging in interdisciplinary discussions, we ruled out alternative medical diagnoses and treatments, ultimately identifying the kinked aortic graft as the primary cause of hemolysis. Due to the patient's comorbidity, it was deemed high-risk to perform a redo thoracic aorta surgery for the replacement of the kinked aortic graft...

BACKGROUND: Esophagectomy is still advised as an additional treatment for patients with superficial esophageal cancer (EC, T1a-T1b) after endoscopic resection (ER). However, esophagectomy often deteriorates the general condition of EC patients. In recent years, adjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) has been recognized as a reliable, non-surgical treatment that can improve the prognosis. How to combine ER with adjuvant therapy to bring maximal benefits to patients has become a hot clinical research hot topic...

BACKGROUND: Chronic lung infections represent a diversity of clinical entities that combined respond to significant public health, particularly in developing countries. However, there is no data regarding the practice patterns, surgeons' preferences, and technological usage, especially among Brazilian surgeons, in the setting of the surgical treatment of chronic lung infections. We, therefore, surveyed Brazilian thoracic surgeons from the Brazilian Society of Thoracic Surgery (SBCT) about practice patterns and trends in surgical treatment for chronic lung infections...

BACKGROUND: The sleep onset process is an ill-defined complex process of transition from wakefulness to sleep, characterized by progressive modifications at the subjective, behavioural, cognitive, and physiological levels. To this date, there is no international consensus which could aid a principled characterisation of this process for clinical research purposes. The current review aims to systemise the current knowledge about the underlying mechanisms of the natural heterogeneity of this process...

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms of the occurrence and progression of dilated cardiomyopathy are still unclear and further exploration is needed. The upgrading of programming languages and the improvement of biological databases have created conditions for us to explore the structural and functional information of biological molecules at the nucleic acid and protein levels, screen key pathogenic genes, and elucidate pathogenic mechanisms. This study aimed to screen key pathogenic genes using machine learning algorithms and explore the correlation between key genes and immune microenvironment through transcriptome sequencing data sets of myocardial samples from patients with dilated cardiomyopathy, providing new ideas for elucidating the pathogenesis of the disease...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The lung microbiome was previously thought to be a sterile environment where only gaseous exchange takes place, but recent studies have shown the presence of microbiota in the lung. This review investigates the current literature on the effects of an environmental driven dysbiosis on the healthy oral and respiratory microbiome and its relationship to lung cancer risk in never-smokers. METHODS: An online electronic search was performed on PubMed of all English-language literature using combinations of the following keywords: "lung cancer", "dysbiosis", "non-smokers", "oral microbiome", and "respiratory microbiome"...

BACKGROUND: Several risk factors for the immune-related adverse events (irAEs) during treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been reported, of which include high levels of C-reactive protein (CRP). In this study, we aim to evaluate CRP levels before ICIs treatments as potential predictive biomarkers of irAEs incidence rate and overall survival (OS) in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: Between December 1, 2015 to December 31, 2019, we retrospectively collected all adult patients with NSCLC who received at least one dose of an ICI targeting the PD-1/PD-L1 axis at the Iwate Medical University Hospital in Japan...
