This study was aimed at determining the indications for combined and organ-preserving operations. The study included 190 patients with retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RLPS). The influence of the following factors on the overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) were studied: involvement of adjacent organs in the tumor, volume of surgical intervention. OS and RFS were worse in pathologically confirmed visceral invasion in the both RLPS low grade and high grade ( p  = 0.000). In RLPS low grade, there was no significant difference in OS and RFS between the group of patients who underwent combined surgery without confirmed visceral invasion and the group of patients who underwent organ-preserving surgery ( p  > 0...

The number of elderly patients diagnosed with cancer is increasing. However, knowledge regarding cancer in elderly patients is very scarce. The aim of this study is to analyze the differences in management and outcomes of high-grade extremity sarcomas between elderly and middle-aged patients. Two cohorts were made (> 70 and 30/50 years old) among patients treated in a multidisciplinary unit of a national reference center between 2011 and 2017 with a minimum of 2 years of follow-up. The management and outcomes between these two cohorts were compared...

This study aimed to evaluate the significance of radiological (magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]) findings, surgical, and previous interventions on prognosis with oncological and functional outcome in patients with parosteal osteosarcoma (POS). Twenty-seven patients (8 male/19 female) who were operated with the diagnosis of primary POS in our institution were retrospectively reviewed. The epidemiological data, biopsy method, misdiagnosis/improper interventions, and delay in diagnosis were noted. The lesions' maximum circumferential extension, maximum longitudinal extension, intramedullary involvement, and neurovascular extensions in MRI sections were evaluated, and the resection type (segmental intraarticular/segmental intercalary/hemicortical), reconstruction type (biologic/non-biologic), and surgical margins were noted...

Liposarcomas are described as soft tissue sarcomas derived from adipose tissue. The finding of this tumor in the mandibular region is exceedingly rare. As of now, it has been described mainly in case reports and small series. A multidisciplinary approach is required to offer optimal treatment and may involve surgery, radiation and systemic therapies. Surgical repair of these defects represents a major challenge in oral and maxillofacial reconstructive surgery. We present the case of a 54-year-old man referred to our center with a progressively increasing mass in the anterior portion of the mandible...

The aim of this study is to evaluate the level of accuracy and precision of bone scan (BS), MRI, and digital radiography (DR) to measure long bone tumors to design custom-made prosthesis (CMP)/modular prosthesis (MP) in limb salvage surgery (LSS) with the help of phantom and patient's study. There are two separate groups: one is the phantom study and another one is the patient's study. The phantom study is done with the Jaszack Phantom for the Gamma camera and the indigenous phantom for the MRI and DR. Three independent imaging professionals (nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists) measured the distance between standardized, preselected points on the Jaszack phantom in the Gamma Camera (GC) and indigenous phantom on the coronal and sagittal view of the MRI scan and in digital radiography...

Grade 3 proximal humerus giant cell tumours are uncommon and the results of their surgical management with prosthetic replacement are not well established. We retrospectively studied patients with grade 3 giant cell tumours of proximal humerus treated with excision and prosthetic replacement from January 2009 and December 2018. We identified 13 patients who underwent tumour excision and prosthetic replacement. There were 7 (53.8%) men and 6 (46.2%) women. The mean age at diagnosis was 30.4 years (range 16-48 years)...

Surgery for gastrointestinal malignancy is associated with severe post-operative pain, which if inadequately treated, can lead to pulmonary complications and, in addition, delayed mobilization leading to delayed recovery and discharge. We audited our practices looking at the various pain modalities used and their effects on the post-operative recovery in colorectal surgeries, in a tertiary care cancer centre during the era of ERAS. The primary aim of the study was to assess the average pain score on movement in the first 72 h of post-operative period among patients...

Primary angiosarcoma of breast (PAB) is a very rare disease and it accounts for only 0.05% of all malignant breast tumors. We present the clinical radiological and pathological features, treatment given, and outcome of this rare disease in our institute in a period of 5 years, aiming at contributing to the knowledge of prognostic factors of this rare disease. We report a case of PAB treated at our hospital along with 2 more cases of PAB we found on retrospective analysis. The basic criterion for inclusion in the study was the presence of histopathologically confirmed primary angiosarcoma of the breast: graded into low (G1, G2) and high (G3) grades...

Calcifying aponeurotic fibroma (CAF) is a rare soft tissue tumor which falls under the WHO category of benign fibroblastic and myofibroblastic tumors. It typically occurs on the distal extremities (hands and foot) of children and adolescents. Other less common sites include wrists, ankles, trunk and rarely legs and arms. These tumors present as a painless soft tissue mass, arising in the subcutis, and are usually connected to tendons or aponeuroses. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are the radiological investigations of choice; however, histopathology remains the diagnostic modality of choice for the diagnosis of CAF...

Activating point mutations in codons 12, 13, and 61 of the KRAS gene and loss of p16 expression, a tumor suppressor gene, are common genetic alterations in periampullary cancer (PAC). The present study explores expression profile of KRAS and p16 genes in PAC and its prognostic relevance. A total of 50 patients with PAC who underwent potentially curative pancreaticoduodenectomy were included in the study. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples were analyzed for point mutations in codons 12 and 13 of KRAS and codon 9 of p16 using polymerase chain reaction...

Watertight repair of the skull base defect is necessary during endonasal skull base surgery to avoid postoperative CSF leak (poCSFl) and consequent intracranial complications. Various techniques have been described for reconstructing sphenoid-sellar defects with varying success rates. We have described the immediate and long-term outcomes following the reconstruction of sphenoid-sellar defects with our technique. A retrospective analysis of the patients following transsphenoidal sellar surgery underwent barrier restoring reconstruction by multi-layered (inlay-overlay) with autologous thigh fat, fascia lata, fibrin glue, knitted collagen, and absorbable gelatin sponge (modified gasket seal technique)...

Breast cancer patients with HER2 gene amplification as assessed by FISH are eligible for HER2-targeted therapy. However, in a small subset of patients, unusual FISH pattern of co-localization and co-amplification can pose challenges in interpretation of the HER2 status and hence to assess the HER2 status accurately; our aim was to report their incidence and analyze them based on latest ASCO/CAP 2018 guidelines. We present seven cases with HER2/CEP17 co-amplification and co-localization from a total 4040 cases referred during the year 2017 to 2021 at Mumbai Reference Laboratory, SRL Diagnostics...

The standard treatment approach for metastatic breast cancer with HR- and Her-2-neu + disease is trastuzumab with systemic therapy. But in patients having severe cardiac dysfunction, trastuzumab is avoided. Various combination regimens are available in that setting, but no study has shown better efficacy of capecitabine monotherapy in this setting. We hereby present a case report of using capecitabine monotherapy in first-line setting, and the patient had complete resolution of lung metastasis from the last 2 years...

Schwannomas are benign encapsulated neoplasms which arise from Schwann cells of the neural sheath. Ancient schwannoma is a rare variant of schwannoma which is often misdiagnosed as a malignant neoplasm owing to degenerative changes. They are known to show degenerative nuclear atypia, cystic degeneration, hyalinization, myxoid change and haemorrhage. We present a rare case of an intrapulmonary ancient schwannoma in a 34-year-old female patient.
