INTRODUCTION: Although it is well-known that several factors such as symptoms and cognition are related with functional outcome in schizophrenia, the complex nature of the disorder makes necessary to study their interaction by means of a more analytic method than simple linkages approaches. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred and sixty five patients with schizophrenia underwent a clinical evaluation (including clinical symptoms, insight, affective symptoms and premorbid adjustment)...

BACKGROUND: Joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS) has been found to be associated with anxiety disorders in clinical and nonclinical populations, but to date no studies have evaluated this association in children. The main goal of this study is to evaluate JHS along with anxiety, somatic and behavioral measures in children to clarify if JHS is associated with any of these variables in this age range. METHODS: A sample of 160 children (74 girls and 86 boys) ranging from 5 to 17 o were recruited from a Child-Adolescent Mental Health clinic to participate in the study...

INTRODUCTION: Childhood trauma has been reported as a risk factor for psychosis. Different types of traumatic experiences in childhood could lead to different clinical manifestations in psychotic disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied differences in social cognition (emotion recognition and theory of mind) and clinical symptoms in a sample of 62 patients with psychosis (less than 5 years of illness) and childhood trauma, analysing performance by trauma type...

Despite the existence of effective evidence-based treatments for the management of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the therapeutic approach to this disease remains suboptimal. The availability of a therapeutic pharmacological guideline for OCD could help to improve the management of the disease in our setting and to reduce the burden of disease for the patient. With the sponsorship of the Spanish Society of Psychiatry, a group of experts has developed a guideline for the pharmacological treatment of OCD based on the recommendations of existing guidelines and following the methodology of the ADAPTE Collaboration...

It has recently been suggested that alterations of the layers of the retina could be a biomarker of specific mental disorders since they originate in the same embryonic layer as the brain and both are interconnected through the optic nerve. The purpose of this article is to offer a systematic review of the literature and a thematic synthesis on the current state of the alterations of the retina layers identified by optical coherence tomography in patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression...

INTRODUCTION: Although home hospitalization has begun to develop widely in recent years there is a notable lack of studies. The following study includes data from the Psychiatric Home Hospitalization Unit of the Hospital del Mar (HADMar). This program has been running for 2years and takes place in a socio-demographically depressed area in Barcelona. It receives patients from community and hospital services. Monitoring is limited in time and at discharge patient are referred to the ambulatory unit...

The introduction of the first antidepressants in the 50s of the 20th century radically changed the treatment of depression, while providing information on pathophysiological aspects of this disease. New antidepressants drugs (agomelatine, tianeptine, vortioxetine) are providing data that give rise to pathophysiological hypotheses of depression that differ from the classic monoaminergic theory. In this sense, tianeptina, an atypical drug by its mechanism of differential action, contributes to clarify that in depression there is more than monoamines...

INTRODUCTION: Facial emotion recognition (FER) is a fundamental component in social interaction. We know that FER is disturbed in patients with severe mental disorder (SMD), as well as those with a history of childhood trauma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We intend to analyze the possible relationship between the existence of trauma in childhood irrespective of a SMD, measured by the CTQ scale and facial expression recognition, in a sample of three types of subjects (n=321): healthy controls (n=179), patients with BPD (n=69) and patients with a first psychotic episode (n=73)...

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the role of coping in relation to suicidal risk in adolescents with Adjustment Disorder (AD). The present study aimed to assess the relation between suicidal ideation and intention and coping strategies in a clinical sample of adolescents with AD, paying special attention to gender differences. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Self-reported questionnaires about suicidal ideation and intention and coping strategies were administered to 108 adolescents with an AD diagnosis...

INTRODUCTION: There has been little change in the incidence of suicidal behaviour and reattempts in recent years. Evidence is needed on the incidence of suicidal behaviour in the psychiatric population and its follow-up. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A prospective multi-centre case-control study. The sample covered the cases of 440 patients seen as psychiatric emergencies. For this purpose, we used the Vital Adverse Event Scale by Brugha and screening with the Columbia Scale...
