Orthopaedic implant-associated infections (OIAIs) is one of the most catastrophic complications following joint arthroplasty or fracture fixation. Given the increasing number of orthopaedic implants which are used annually, periprosthetic infections emerge as a global problem. Their diagnosis and consequent therapeutic management remain challenging for clinicians. Biofilm formation is a complex and only partially understood process that has not been extensively studied. Understanding the underlying mechanisms involved in biofilm formation is crucial in the amelioration of both diagnosis and therapeutic management of OIAIs...

Background: We present the case of a patient with solitary fibrous tumor of the masticator space with unusual extension. Case presentation: A 43-year-old woman presented with a painless mass with intraoral extension on the right cheek. The B-scan sonograph and magnetic resonance imaging revealed the extension of the tumor. The biopsy performed under local anesthesia raised the suspicion of a solitary fibrous tumor. Tumor excision included a preoperative tumor embolization. The surgical removal of the tumor included a partial parotidectomy on the right side, insertion of masseteric and temporalis muscle, resection of the middle part of the zygomatic bone and stabilization of the bone with a plate, mobilization of the tumor from the maxillary sinus and the pterygopalatine fossa through an endoscopic approach and an approach via partial resection of the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus after identifying and sparing the infraorbital nerve...

Laryngocele, a dilation of the laryngeal saccule, is an uncommon and benign air-filled lesion that expands upwards into the ventricle of Morgagni. A unilateral growth within the larynx that is in communication with the laryngeal lumen typically signals its presence. The exact cause of the disorder remains uncertain, although there are three main theories which suggest congenital reasons, increased pressure in the larynx, or mechanical obstruction of the ventricle of Morgagni. The classification for laryngoceles is based upon their location with respect to the thyrohyoid membrane, and they may be internal, external, or combined...

Liposarcomas are among the most usual cancerous growths of mesenchymal tissues and represent about 1% of head and neck sarcomas. They are extremely rare in childhood and are mostly seen between 30 and 60 years of age. The biologic behavior and histologic features of liposarcomas vary. Although these tumors grow very slowly and have a benign behavior, sometimes they grow rapidly and metastasize early, with fatal results. This case report presents a 63-year-old man with a tumor of the left side of the cervical region which has grown to a large size over four years...

A pharyngoesophageal diverticulum (PED) is a rare clinical entity. This paper reports on a 79-year-old male patient with PED and symptoms of dysphagia, regurgitation and chronic cough. The diverticulum was located on the dorsal side of the cervical esophagus, midline, inferior to the cricopharyngeal muscle. These findings were consistent with Laimer's diverticulum (LD), the rarest type of PED. This case proposes a surgical treatment of LD via an external transcervical approach.

Pyogenic granuloma is a benign proliferative fibrovascular lesion commonly arising from the skin and mucous membranes of the head and neck region. Histologically, this tumor is characterized by vascular proliferation and a circumscribed group of capillaries organized in lobules. It is usually located in the oral cavity and nasal location is less frequent. When it occurs in pregnant women, it is usually referred as pyogenic granuloma gravidarum. In this article we present the case of a pyogenic granuloma gravidarum in a young woman with intermittent epistaxis during the last trimester of pregnancy that did not resolve after childbirth and was treated with transnasal endoscopic resection and cautery at the base of the lesion for hemostasis under local anesthesia...
