Background Resident burnout is at an all-time high. In response, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) developed the Back to Bedside grant for resident-led burnout interventions that increase the time residents spend with patients. Objective We designed a resident-patient reading intervention, Giving Literal Thanks (GLT), intended to increase meaningful time residents spend with patients and thereby decrease burnout. Methods All 65 pediatric residents rotating through our academic hospital's inpatient units from Fall 2019 through Fall 2021 were invited to read and gift books to their patients...

Background There are few published resources to guide content of health disparities curricula. To train physicians to effectively address disparities, the needs and expectations of the local community need to be considered. Objective To obtain community insight about factors influencing health disparities and important components of a health disparities curriculum for residents. Methods This qualitative study consisted of 5 focus groups held in 2019; 4 included local community members, and the fifth was of leaders from local agencies serving these communities...

Background Compared to in-person recruitment, virtual interviewing reduces costs and promotes equity. However, many residency applicants believe that visiting programs helps inform their rank decisions. Objective We assessed the feasibility of and stakeholder opinions about optional in-person visits after virtual interviewing and program rank list finalization. Methods Six internal medicine residency programs conducted virtual recruitment in 2022-2023 and finalized their rank lists 4 weeks before the deadline...

Background Internal medicine (IM) resident physicians spend a considerable amount of time managing their inbox as part of their longitudinal continuity clinic experience. There are no standardized guidelines for how programs should train, monitor, or supervise residents in this type of patient care. Objective To understand how IM residency programs educate, monitor, and supervise resident electronic health record (EHR) inbox management as part of their longitudinal continuity clinic and determine whether patient safety events have occurred due to EHR inbox-related patient care decisions made by unsupervised resident physicians...

Background Panel management is essential for residents to learn, yet challenging to teach. To our knowledge, prior literature has not described curricula utilizing a financially incentivized competition to improve resident primary care metrics. Objective We developed a panel management curriculum, including a financially incentivized quality competition, to improve resident performance on quality metrics. Methods We developed a cancer screening and diabetes metric quality competition for internal medicine residents at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for their primary care clinics for the 2020-2021 (pilot) and 2021-2022 academic years...

Background Health care professionals report higher levels of mental health symptoms, pandemic-related stress, personal health concerns, and reduced proactive coping, especially in recent years marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. As physician utilization rates of mental health and well-being services remain low, the need for preemptive care is crucial. Objective The present study sought to ascertain satisfaction, value, and attitude toward future mental health services among resident physicians. Methods Throughout the 2020-2021 academic year, resident physicians within 8 training programs at a large academic training hospital were offered single opt-out mental health appointments from hospital-funded, graduate medical education wellness staff at no cost to the resident...
