BACKGROUND: The last systematic review about respiratory muscle training (RMT) in people with asthma was published almost 10 years ago. Since then, several works have been published. OBJECTIVE: To review the effect of RMT in people with asthma. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of research included up to September 2021 in PubMed/MEDLINE, PEDro, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, LILACS, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and ClinicalTrials...

OBJECTIVE: To report on preoperative outcomes that guide the choice of surgical techniques to correct equinovarus foot in adults with brain injury. METHODS: Four databases (PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane, PEDro) were searched according to the PRISMA guidelines. Studies were included regardless of their level of proof, with no limitation on date of publication, and their quality was assessed with the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies score. RESULTS: We analysed 61 studies (n = 2,293 participants); 523 participants underwent neurotomy, 437 calf musculotendinous lengthening, and 888 tibialis anterior transfer or alternative anterior transfers with the flexor digitorum/hallucis longus (n = 249), the extensor hallucis longus (n = 102), the tibialis posterior (n = 41) and the peroneus longus (n = 41)...

BACKGROUND: Non-specific low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of years lived with disability worldwide. Physical activity is an integral part of LBP treatment. OBJECTIVE: To critically review available evidence regarding the efficacy of physical activity for people with LBP. METHODS: Up to date critical narrative review of the efficacy of physical activity for the managment LBP. The process of article selection was unsystematic; articles were selected based on authors' expertise, self-knowledge and reflective practice...

BACKGROUND: The comparison of recovery patterns for different care pathways following COVID-19 is necessary for optimizing rehabilitation strategies. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate cognitive and psychological outcomes across different care pathways up to 12 months after hospitalization for COVID-19. METHODS: CO-FLOW is an ongoing multicenter prospective cohort study with assessments at 3, 6, and 12 months after hospitalization for COVID-19. The main outcomes are cognitive deficits (Montreal Cognitive Assessment, score <26), cognitive failure (Cognitive Failure Questionnaire, score >43), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; Impact of Event Scale-Revised, score ≥33), and anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, subscale score ≥11)...

OBJECTIVES: After total hip arthroplasty (THA), over 30% of individuals report activity limitations and participation restrictions. This systematic review aimed to determine the association between contextual factors and outcomes in the activity and participation domain after THA for hip osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: This systematic review was developed according to the PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews. PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Scopus were searched until August 2022...

BACKGROUND: One common complication after mastectomy is thickened scars at the surgical site that impair shoulder function. This study aimed to investigate the effects of mechanical stimulation on scar appearance, arm function, and quality of life of breast cancer survivors after mastectomy. METHODS: This was a single-center, single-blinded (assessor), randomized controlled trial with a 3-month follow-up. Women who had undergone mastectomy in the preceding 6 weeks for breast cancer were randomly allocated to an experimental group and a control group by permuted block randomization (block size=6)...

BACKGROUND: Hemispatial neglect is a disabling cognitive disorder following stroke and effective therapies are required. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of combined optokinetic stimulation (OKS) and cueing-assisted reading therapy (READ) on the remission of hemispatial neglect following stroke. METHODS: Randomized, controlled, two-period, crossover trial conducted at a German neurorehabilitation center. Twenty participants with left neglect following right hemispheric stroke (mean age 66 years (SD 11), mean time since stroke 50 days (SD 33)) finished the trial (12 received OKSREAD first, 8 CONTROL first)...

BACKGROUND: Individuals requiring non-traumatic Gritti-Stokes amputation or mid-thigh amputation usually have multiple comorbidities that place them at high risk of mortality. OBJECTIVE: To determine survival rate 5 years after Gritti-Stokes and mid-thigh amputation in individuals with vascular insufficiency and to identify the predictors of survival. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study including all individuals with vascular insufficiency who underwent amputation from September 2007 to December 2015 in our University Hospital...

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to pool available evidence of differences in trunk and lower extremity biomechanics during the different phases of a sit-to-stand (STS) task between persons with stroke and to healthy controls. METHODS: Four electronic databases (Medline, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library) were systematically searched up to, and including, December 2021. Studies were included if they investigated kinematic, kinetic and/or electromyographic outcome measures of adults with stroke during STS and compared results with healthy controls...

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of physical inactivity after stroke is high and exercise training improves many outcomes. However, access to community training protocols is limited, especially in low-income settings. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility and efficacy of a new intervention: Circuit walking, balance, cycling and strength training (CBCS) on activity of daily living (ADL) limitations, motor performance, and social participation restrictions in people after stroke...

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke spasticity is a cause of gait dysfunction and disability. Focal vibration (FV) of agonist-antagonist upper limb muscle pairs reduces flexor spasticity; however, its effects on ankle plantarflexor spasticity are uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of focal vibration administered by a trained operator to the ankle plantarflexor and dorsiflexor muscles on post-stroke lower limb spasticity. METHODS: A randomized, single-blind controlled trial of 64 participants with stroke and plantarflexor spasticity assigned to 3 groups by centralized, computer-generated randomization (1:1:1): 1) physiotherapy alone (CON), 2) physiotherapy+gastrocnemius vibration (FV_GM) and 3) physiotherapy+tibialis anterior vibration (FV_TA)...
