REVIEW
Szu-Wen Chang, Hung-Chang Lee
Severe vitamin D deficiency may cause rickets in infants or children and osteomalacia in adults, though it is now uncommon in developed countries. However, subclinical vitamin D deficiency is more prevalent, and it is associated with osteoporosis and higher incidence of falls or fractures. It was reported that 96% children with rickets were breastfed, since breast milk contains inadequate vitamin D. The American Academy of Pediatrics 2008 recommended infants who were exclusively or partially breastfed required 400 international units vitamin D daily from the first few days of life...

BACKGROUND: Parents often express concerns about feeding difficulties in their child. We hypothesized that these parental concerns were associated with adverse growth status in early childhood. We aimed to determine the prevalence of such concerns and whether these concerns were associated with adverse growth status in early childhood. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study among healthy children aged 12-36 months attending three well-baby clinics in three urban areas in Malaysia and Singapore between December 2016 and February 2017...

OBJECTIVES: Prior studies have proposed that maternal intrapartum antibiotic exposure shapes the gut microbiota and, subsequently the child's health. However, the effect of maternal intrapartum antibiotic exposure and its influence on the development of the neonatal oral microbiota in early infancy has not yet been reported. The aim of this study was to compare the initial oral microbiota immediately after birth of healthy infants with and without intrapartum antibiotic exposure. METHODS: Twenty-two newborns of the BaoAn Maternal and Child Care Hospital (Shenzhen, China) were recruited for this study, 11 born to mothers without intrapartum antibiotic exposure (NT group) and 11 to mothers with intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis with cefamezin (AT group)...

BACKGROUND: Non- and under-vaccination among children in Malawi have received little attention. Between 2010 and 2016, the proportion of children who received full immunization before their first birthday dropped from 81% to 76% in Malawi. This signifies that a certain fraction of children are either non-vaccinated or under-vaccinated. Thus, the present study attempted to examine the predictors of non- and under-vaccination among children aged 12-23 months in Malawi. METHODS: Cross-sectional data obtained from the Malawi Demographic and Health Survey 2015-16 were utilized...

BACKGROUND: To describe the characteristics, treatments, and prognosis of pediatric gastric perforation patients beyond neonatal period. METHODS: Twenty pediatric patients beyond neonatal period were included in this study. Medical records were reviewed and clinical characteristics were analyzed. According to the outcomes, patients were divided into the survival group and the death group. Death time was documented, and survival patients were followed up. The degree of severity was calculated using pediatric critical illness score (PCIS)...

BACKGROUND: Very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants have a high risk of postdischarge growth retardation (GR). Continued GR might exert negative long-term effects on their health. This study examined the prevalence and the risk factors for postdischarge GR among VLBW infants in Taiwan. METHODS: Nationwide data from the Taiwan Premature Infant Follow-up Network between 2007 and 2011 were analyzed. Infants with a gestational age (GA) < 37 weeks and birth body weight (BBW) < 1500 g were enrolled...

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to measure the basal serum cortisol concentration immediately after birth and to determine its association with perinatal factors and clinical outcomes in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. METHODS: Basal serum cortisol level was obtained within one hour after birth in inborn VLBW infants. The association between the basal serum cortisol level and perinatal and clinical outcomes was analyzed by comparing the groups with high versus low cortisol levels...

BACKGROUND: Despite Trisomy 13 and 18 being among the most fatal congenital anomalies, limited information exists about resource utilization and factors associated with length of stay (LOS) and total hospital charges (THC) for these anomalies. METHODS: We studied data sets of the patient discharge data set from the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development from 2006 to 2010, to determine differences in resource utilization for survivors and non-survivors and identify the predictors of LOS and total hospital charges...

AIM: Precise estimation of respiratory function is essential to optimise neonatal respiratory care. However, current clinical scores have not been validated with quantitative measures of respiratory function. The aim of this study was to develop a physiological scoring system to predict low respiratory dynamic compliance of <0.6 ml/cmH2 O/kg. METHODS: Forty-four newborn infants were studied before (dynamic compliance) and shortly after scheduled extubation (physiological signs)...
