PURPOSE: Admissions criteria for physician assistant (PA) schools vary considerably, but they often involve a combination of academic measures, noncognitive "humanistic" qualities, and mission-related items. To address noncognitive attributes, some PA schools have implemented the multiple mini-interview (MMI) format developed at McMaster University in Canada. This research project looked at differences in interview scores by gender over 3 consecutive admissions cycles at one PA program...

Driven by the convergence of the exponential growth of medical knowledge and the dated medical education delivery system, educators in physician assistant (PA) programs are striving to create teaching practices that actively engage students, improve knowledge retention, and prepare students for a career that requires lifelong learning and reflection. The emphasis on professor-directed teaching and learning activities is shifting toward a more learner-centered approach. To incorporate appropriate active learning exercises into the PA classroom, instructors must plan, design, and execute pedagogically sound practices...

PURPOSE: The United States is facing an opioid public health crisis. Educating providers is essential for addressing this epidemic. This study sought to understand how physician assistant (PA) programs are educating students in opioid prescribing to avoid addiction. METHODS: An Internet-based survey was sent to PA educators about the current landscape of opioid prescribing education (OPE) and opioid addiction education (OAE) at their institutions. RESULTS: Eighty-eight completed surveys were analyzed to gauge opioid education in PA school: 49 (55...

Physician associate (PA) education in the United Kingdom has grown substantially since the establishment of 4 PA education programs in the late 2000s. From those 4 programs in 2008, the number of universities educating PAs fell to a nadir of 2 programs in 2012 and then rose to 29 by the end of 2017. Due to program closures, the number of students enrolled in the early years fluctuated substantially. In 2008, 43 students entered PA education; in 2010, only 17 students started PA training, but in 2017, the number of students enrolled in PA programs soared to 853...

PURPOSE: Results from an evaluation of a 12-month postgraduate Veterans Health Administration (VHA) residency in primary care for physician assistants (PAs). METHODS: Descriptive and open-ended data were collected to describe the experience of faculty and trainees participating in the first 3 years of this pilot residency. Quantitative data were summarized using descriptive statistics. Text data were transcribed and reviewed for common themes across residency sites and respondents...

PURPOSE: Physician assistants (PAs) are well situated to provide much-needed care in medically underserved areas (MUAs). Therefore, it is critical to understand the factors that make PA students want to practice in MUAs. The current study investigated how 3 student characteristics-underrepresented minority (URM) status, geographic origin, and family socioeconomic status-were associated with PA students' interest in practicing in MUAs after graduation. METHODS: Upon their matriculation in 2016, 4329 PA students provided key demographic information (ie, gender, age, race, ethnicity, geographic origin, and an indicator of family socioeconomic status) and reported their interest in working in an MUA after graduation...

PURPOSE: The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) is responsible for accrediting the current 236 entry-level physician assistant (PA) programs in the United States. This study analyzes citations levied against PA programs by the ARC-PA and how those citations relate to the commission's ultimate accreditation decisions; in addition, this study compares PA program characteristics and assesses those characteristics as they relate to recent accreditation outcomes...

PURPOSE: The use of certified physician assistants (PA) has increased throughout the US health care system. The purpose of this study was to objectively evaluate physicians' perceptions of PAs' mastery of specific skills. It is important to understand stakeholders' perceptions of PAs' capabilities to support future changes in policies for better utilization of PAs in our health care system. METHODS: From 2014 to 2015, randomly chosen "active" physicians listed with the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure were surveyed about their perceptions of competencies of certified PAs...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this pilot study was 2-fold. The first was to investigate the conceptual relationship between previously validated methodologies. The second was to establish a linkage between medical education research and current neurocognitive science that accounts for knowledge organization during the clinical reasoning process. METHODS: Transcripts of Think Aloud interviews conducted after an objective structured clinical examination (n = 12) were coded and analyzed into 3 clinical reasoning competencies (semantic, diagnostic, and knowledge network organization)...

PURPOSE: Guided clinical experience is a critical component of a physician assistant (PA) student's education. However, clinical precepting is strongly perceived to have deleterious effects on productivity. In this study, we sought to test a method for evaluating the effect that PA students have on clinical productivity. METHODS: We recruited 14 family medicine preceptors and second-year PA students from 2 programs, the University of Washington (UW) and the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UT)...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine USAF physician assistants' (PAs') concerns regarding postgraduate education and training. METHODS: This was a single-mode, observational, cross-sectional study using an anonymous-structured survey involving a population of 420 active duty USAF PAs. Potential participants were contacted by email and asked to take a one-time survey via a secure survey site link. RESULTS: One hundred ten USAF PAs participated in the survey seeking their opinions on factors affecting applying for military postgraduate specialty training...

Students enrolled in medical schools, nursing schools, and physician assistant (PA) programs are required to have instruction on patient privacy and protection of health-related information. The medical literature has several examples of breaches of patient privacy by clinicians, which likely represents only a fraction of the violations that occur. Patient privacy and the protection of health-related information constitute both an ethical issue and a legal issue and are associated with significant consequences...

PURPOSE: We performed a needs assessment to understand how existing physician assistant (PA) program curricula and clinical training affect students' ultrasound knowledge, skills, and competence and prepare students for performing ultrasound techniques in clinical practice. METHODS: Students graduating from a PA program completed a 23-item questionnaire examining their ultrasound training experiences, their self-assessment of competency, and their demographics. Students also completed a 15-item ultrasound knowledge assessment...
