Technetium-99m (99m Tc)-pertechnetate can be taken up by both gastric mucosa and thyroid tissue. Ectopic gastric mucosa of upper esophagus found in thyroid scintigraphy is rare. We reported a 31-year-old woman who underwent 99m Tc-pertechnetate thyroid static scintigraphy for abnormal ultrasound findings. A focal uptake lesion was found in her upper chest. Single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) imaging showed increased uptake in multiple sites of the upper esophagus without significant thickening...

Gallium-68 (68 Ga)-prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose(18 F-FDG) PET/CT were performed for staging in a 51-year-old man with renal cell carcinoma. Compared with 18 F-FDG PET/CT, no obvious tracer uptake in right renal mass and less metastatic lesions were found on 68 Ga-PSMA PET/CT. Postoperative pathology demonstrated the diagnosis of fumarate hydratase-deficient renal cell carcinoma (FHRCC).

A 48-year-old man with an intermittent fever of 39.0o C for more than three weeks underwent computed tomography (CT) and blood testing, which revealed no clues. Antibiotics wereadministered, but his condition did not improve. Fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18 F-FDG PET/CT) showed right-lobe-dominant diffuse thyroid uptake. On technetium-99m (99m Tc) pertechnetate scintigraphy, the thyroid gland could not be visualized, and he was diagnosed with subacute thyroiditis (SAT)...

Technetium-99m- diphosphono-1,2-propanodicarboxylic acid (99m Tc-DPD) is currently used in Europe for the diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis, being able to distinguish light chain (AL) from transthyretin (TTR) type. We are reporting obvious spleen visualization in two patients suffering the first from proven TTR and the second from AL type of cardiac amyloidosis, with myocardial uptake-as anticipated-only in the first one. We raise the hypothesis that a common uptake mechanism exists for the spleen amyloid regardless of the type of the disease (AL or TTR), and is possibly different than the cardiac uptake mechanism...

OBJECTIVE: With single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/computed tomography (CT) quantitative examinations, CT-based attenuation correction (CTAC) is considered necessary, though its effect on the quantitative values of an examined area close to the body surface, such as the jawbone, has not been elucidated. We performed an investigation to determine whether quantitative evaluation using a bone SPECT standalone device without CT is possible. OBJECTIVE: In previous fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18 F-FDG PET/CT) studies, tumor segmentation using peritumoral halo layer (PHL; SegPHL) was shown to be reliable and accurate segmentation method in various malignant tumors. We found that the halo layer also was observed on the 99m Tc-pertechnetate (99m TcO4 ) thyroid single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/CT. In the present study, we attempted to apply thyroid segmentation using the perithyroidal halo layer (PTHL; SegPTHL) on 99m TcO4 thyroid SPECT/CT and compared SegPTHL with CT-based thyroid segmentation (SegCT)...

Amyloidoisis in patients with Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) mostly involves the heart, peripheral nerves and kidneys. Retroperitoneal amyloidosis is a rare finding. We describe a 62-year-old man with an incidental finding of a monoclonal gammopathy and elevated inflammatory parameters. Bilateral moderately active retroperitoneal infiltration with punctiform calcifications was found on fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18 F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging. Taken together, these findings are suggestive of Waldenström associated amyloidosis...

OBJECTIVE: Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is one of the fastest growing cancers worldwide. Despite the generally good prognosis of thyroid carcinoma, about 5% of patients will develop metastatic disease, exhibiting a more aggressive behavior. Radioiodine whole-body scintigraphy (WBS) has been used in the detection of DTC. Radioiodine is a sensitive marker for detection of thyroid cancer; however, radioiodine uptake is not specific for thyroid tissue. It can also be seen in healthy tissue as well as in inflammation, or in a variety of benign and malignant non-thyroidal entities...

OBJECTIVE: Fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18 F-FDG) injection activity is positively associated with radiation dose and positron emission tomography (PET) image count. Measurement error is greater with smaller counts; therefore, precise analysis is needed to avoid high doses of radiation exposure caused by high 18 F-FDG injection. We aimed to identify and validate the optimal 18 F-FDG injection activity and acquisition time for cardiac viability imaging with intravenous insulin preparation administration based on fixed 18 F-FDG activity...

OBJECTIVE: The value of ventilation-perfusion (VQ) single photon emission tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) lobar quantification for pre-operative assessment of lobectomy and lung volume reduction is known. OBJECTIVE: Patients with indeterminate thyroid cytology often have a diagnostic hemithyroidectomy. The role of molecular imaging, particularly fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18 F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET), is controversial, and demographic variations in tumor prevalence and histology influence test performance and clinical utility. We retrospectively assessed the prevalence of indeterminate thyroid cytology and the malignancy rate in patients from an iodine deficient area, and evaluated the diagnostic value of preoperative thyroid scintigraphy and 18 F-FDG PET/CT among operated patients...

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a haematological disorder, affecting single or multiple organs, characterized by abnormal proliferation of Langerhans cells in children. Accurate tumour delineation (number of lesions, organs involved) is crucial for staging/re-staging, and follow-up (response to therapy). Conventional imaging techniques (computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)) have been employed for initial diagnosis, staging and assessment of response to therapy focusing on the healing effect therapeutic protocols have on the disease...
