Pivotal crash factors are investigated, and crash-severity model for the safety assessment at roundabouts and its vicinity in non-lane based heterogenous traffic is developed. An ordered-probit model was developed using crash-data collected between 2015-2019 for 20 roundabouts in India. The analysis revealed critical influencing parameters for determining the severity-level of crash outcomes at roundabouts, namely, inscribed-circle diameter, height of central island, number of circulatory lanes, presence of splitter island and median, posted-speed limit, type of collision, type of violation behaviour, collision partner, the pattern of collision, presence of road lane-marking, presence of street-light and age of victims...

Delivery riders are more vulnerable than other traffic participants, especially in vehicle-involved delivery crashes. This study aims at identifying the unobserved heterogeneities in different factors, based on 4251 vehicle-scooter-style electric bicycle (SSEB) crashes. First, some potential factors are selected from seven perspectives, and the spatiotemporal characteristics are analysed. Second, a latent class clustering method is proposed to clarify the optimal number of clusters by maximizing the heterogeneities across clusters...

China has experienced remarkable achievements in terms of reducing the number of extraordinarily severe traffic crashes (ESTCs) that cause more than 10 deaths each crash. However, ESTCs still occur occasionally and result in extremely adverse social impacts. This study aims at investigating the common characteristics, characteristic patterns, and changes of characteristics of ESTCs in China with the expectation to learn from the past and act for the future. A total of 373 ESTCs occurred in 2004-2019 were collected, and characteristics of driver factors, road factors, vehicle factors, environment factors, and other factors were analyzed through the multiple correspondence analysis (MCA)...

The media plays a key role in shaping the public's perception of road safety. This study analyzes the newspaper coverage and framing of motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) and road safety in Argentina, South America. The content of 304 articles published by 15 newspapers in November 2020 was reviewed. The results show that episodically framed news stories (focused on a single event or incident) prevail over thematically framed articles. MVCs are presented primarily as 'police' events and tend to receive more coverage when fatalities are involved...

Failure to meet road safety targets has necessitated urgent actions from stakeholders worldwide, especially in developing countries like India. Road safety of motorized two-wheelers (MTWs), one of India's most preferred travel modes for urban commutes, is in danger and witnessing threatening figures of fatalities and injuries. Most of the studies in the domain of MTW safety were conducted in developed countries, with very limited research in countries having a significant proportion of MTWs. The present work investigates police-reported crash data to identify the contributory factors of motorized two-wheeler crash severity...

A lack of research exists concerning the heterogeneity of the occupational injuries of slum dwellers across industries which has a close link with health expenditure and hence livelihood. It necessitates analysing their occupational injuries and associated out-of-pocket health expenditures. Multi-stage random sampling is used to collect the primary data and the logit model is used for data analyses. Permanent non-fatal injuries in the civil-mechanical industries and temporary non-fatal injuries in textile industries are common...

Urban-rural integration is the critical process of urbanization, while during this process there are various corresponding problems generated, safety is the most important one, especially at urban-rural fringe areas due to mixed traffic flow and complicated land use. This study intended to investigate the injury severity interaction between urban area and urban-rural fringe area, and explore the correlation within injury severity levels and heterogeneity attributed to unobserved factors. To address the correlation and heterogeneity issues, a grouped random parameters seemingly unrelated bivariate (SUB) probit model was proposed, in which the SUB probit model addressed the correlation of residuals, while the random parameters model accommodated the heterogeneity due to unobserved factors...

Drivers traversing the horizontal curves are expected to complete the deceleration manoeuvre on the tangent and transition curve and maintain a constant speed upon reaching the curve. However, this may not be true for the horizontal curves constituting a two-lane undivided rural highway passing through mountainous terrain. The objective of this study is to investigate the speed variability on a two-lane rural highway passing through mountainous terrain and to identify its determinants. The continuous speed profiles of vehicles traversing the curves were extracted using the video image processing technique...

The main goal of this study is to investigate the unobserved heterogeneity in VRU-MV crash data and to determine the relatively important contributing factors of injury severity. For this end, a latent class analysis (LCA) coupled with random parameters logit model (LCA-RPL) is developed to segment the VRU-MV crashes into relatively homogeneous clusters and to explore the differences among clusters. The random-forest-based SHapley Additive exPlanation (RF-SHAP) approach is used to explore the relative importance of the contributing factors for injury severity in each cluster...
