BACKGROUND: Rh disease occurs following maternal alloimmunization, which can develop due to RhD blood group antigen incompatibility between a mother and her fetus. Despite developing robust clinical protocols for effective immunoprophylaxis over the last 50+ years, a significant global burden of Rh disease still exists, particularly in low/middle-income countries such as Mexico. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study examined disparities in the allocation of maternal and child health resources, as well as clinical knowledge regarding Rh disease, to gain insight into why Rh disease remains prevalent in Mexico...

BACKGROUND: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is characterized by high heterogeneity, poor long-term survival, and a propensity for relapse. Exceptional efficacy in treating recurrent or refractory B-lymphoid malignancies has been demonstrated by Chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR-T cells). Given the therapeutic potential of targeting both CD33 and C-type lectin-like molecule-1 (CLL1) in AML, the development of a dual-targeting CD33-CLL1 CAR-T cells assumes significant importance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The expressions of CD33 and CLL-1 antigens in peripheral blood cells and bone marrow cells from AML patients was assessed...

BACKGROUND: There is debate whether delayed umbilical cord clamping following delivery, the current gold standard, affects the proportion of cord blood units (CBU) suitable for public cord blood banking. This study was designed to assess the impact of delayed cord clamping on the number of CBU suitable for therapeutic uses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To minimize variability, data from the four most active collection centers within the Programa Concordia (Spain) were included...

BACKGROUND: Prematurity is a significant health issue due to its incidence and associated complications. Anemia is common in extremely preterm infants (EPI) and often requires transfusions. Red blood cells (RBC) from adult blood (AB) donors have been linked to oxygen-related complications in EPI, leading to the exploration of cord blood (CB) as an alternative source. However, standardization of CB-RBC manufacturing and comparison with AB-RBC characteristics are necessary before clinical studies can be conducted...

BACKGROUND: The impact of pathogen reduction technology (PRT) on metabolic and haemostatic profile of treated platelets remains a subject of debate. Platelets Additive Solutions (PASs) are suggested as more appropriate storage medium compared to plasma. To investigate this in terms of zero heterogeneity PRT-treated and control apheresis platelet concentrates (PCs), collected from the same donors and stored in PAS and plasma respectively, were analyzed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the first arm of the study six double dose-apheresis PCs were produced, split and stored in plasma, while in the second arm six split double dose-apheresis PCs from the same donors, were produced and stored in PAS...

BACKGROUND: In hospitalized patients undergoing therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), it is not known how TPE-associated bleeding risk is impacted by a prior bleeding episode. Therefore, to assess the prevalence and predictors of bleeding recurrence, we analyzed data from the Recipient Epidemiology and Donor Evaluation Study-III (REDS-III). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of REDS-III public use files, we identified hospitalized adults who had a major bleeding episode prior to their first TPE procedure...

BACKGROUND: Treatment with recombinant human erythropoietin (rHu-EPO) modestly prevented packed red blood cell transfusions (pRBCTs) in preterm infants in studies performed several years ago. In France, some neonatal units stopped using rHu-EPO, while others continued. The aim of this study was to explore the role of rHu-EPO in the prevention of pRBCTs in a recent cohort of preterm infants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preterm infants who met rHu-EPO indications and were hospitalised between 2018 and 2020 in two neonatal units -one that did not use rHu-EPO and another that did- were eligible...

BACKGROUND: Transfusion medicine is facing new challenges from therapies which interfere with pre-transfusional tests, such as monoclonal antibodies targeting blood-cell antigens. Anti-CD38 monoclonal antibodies, widely used to treat multiple myeloma, cause panreactivity of indirect antiglobulin test; this can be resolved by treating cells with dithiothreitol to disrupt the CD38 disulphide bonds expressed on red blood cell surfaces. Interference mitigation strategy with dithiothreitol, however, has some drawbacks: it entails losing the traceability of results and the denaturation of blood group systems sensitive to reducing agents; it takes time to perform and quality controls are lost...

BACKGROUND: There is some evidence showing rebound of COVID-19 infections in patients treated with nirmatrelvir-ritonavir between 2 and 8 days following cessation of the antiviral treatment. COVID-19 rebound is not unique to patients treated with nirmatrelvir-ritonavir, but is also observed in molnupiravir recipients, in patients who did not receive any antiviral treatment and in patients who received convalescent plasma (CP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a systematic review with meta-analysis of clinical trials evaluating rates of virologic and clinical rebound in COVID-19 patients receiving antiviral agents, CP or no treatment...
