Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is an infection that poses a great threat to both developed and developing countries. Health facilities offering complementary care, along with standard care, have been considered as a useful strategy to overcome the burden of HIV and promote quality and wellbeing among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). In this report, we make reference to seven participants diagnosed with HIV, who underwent naturopathy and yoga based lifestyle intervention (NYLI), for varying durations, at a sanatorium for PLWHA...

BACKGROUND: Literature suggests interprofessional education (IPE) and education about complementary therapies for health sciences students may be effectively combined. METHODS: A novel 30-hour, 10-week course for interprofessional undergraduate health sciences students combining IPE and complementary therapies learning objectives was developed and offered in 2012 (N = 71), 2013 (N = 120) and 2014 (N = 140). Pre-post mixed methods measurement occurred in three groups: one taking combined IPE-complementary therapies curriculum, and two control groups (one following non-specialized IPE curriculum, and one following combined IPE-continuing care curriculum)...

CONTEXT: Increasing physical activity and promoting healthy behaviors may play a key role in reducing the adverse effects of antiretroviral therapy and HIV. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of an 8-week lifestyle modification program (LMP) on quality of life, anthropometric characteristics and CD4+T cell count of people living with HIV (PLWH). METHODS: Thirty PLWH taking ART were randomly assigned to a lifestyle modification program (LMP) (n = 15) or standard care control (CON) group (n = 15)...

REVIEW
Carol Reive
BACKGROUND: Chronic Stress disrupts homeostasis, resulting in adverse physiologic and psychologic sequela. Research on the effects of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) have primarily used self-report measures or biological measurements of a single body system. There has been no attempt to synthesize the literature of the biological measurements of MBSR. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this systematic review were to: (1) identify the biological markers of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and (2) determine if the identified markers support the theories of allostasis and top-down, bottom-up processes...

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effects of chromotherapy on the cognitive ability of older adults. METHODS: This quasi-experimental pretest and posttest study was conducted among 135 older adults in Ilocos Sur, Philippines, between August and September 2015. The participants were divided into three groups: red, green, and white lights, with 45 people in each group. The cognitive ability of older adults was measured using an adapted Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE)...

BACKGROUND: Distant intention research refers to experiments in which a distant interaction between two persons is assessed that precludes conventional communication. In these experiments the intention of one person is varied systematically while the effect of this variation is assessed in the remote other person. AIMS: Our study aimed at improving effect sizes by participant selection based on a screening test and by including experienced meditators. METHOD: 66 participants with meditation experience participated in a forced-choice psi-test as a screening test...

Wisdom-based Buddhist-derived practices (BDPs) are concerned with transmuting suffering by cultivating insight into the ultimate nature of both the self and reality. Arguably the most important wisdom-based BDP is emptiness (Sanskrit: śūnyatā) that implies that although phenomena are perceptible to the human mind, they do not intrinsically exist. Despite its significance in Buddhism, emptiness has received little empirical attention. Advancing scientific understanding of emptiness is important as it may yield novel insights not only into the nature of mind and reality, but also in terms of helping human beings realise more of their capacity for wisdom and wellbeing...

CONTEXT: Walking football (soccer) has recently emerged as a physical activity option targeted at older males to enhance health and wellbeing. DESIGN: This pilot study aimed to examine the feasibility of recruiting and retaining males aged 50 years and over to an 8-week walking football programme in a professional football club. INTERVENTION: Participants were recruited via social media and assigned to an intervention group or a wait-list control group...
