Background: The seropositivity rate of antibodies against hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) is known to be ≥95% after Hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination during infancy. However, low or absence of anti-HBs in healthy children are discovered in many cases. Recent, studies in adults have reported that reduction in the rate of anti-HBs production is related to obesity. Purpose: The present study investigated whether body mass index (BMI) affects anti-HBs level in healthy children following three serial dose vaccination in infancy...

Fecal calprotectin (FC) is a calcium- and zinc-binding protein of the S100 family, mainly expressed by neutrophils and released during inflammation. FC became an increasingly useful tool both for gastroenterologists and for general practitioners for distinguishing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) from irritable bowel syndrome. Increasing evidences support the use of this biomarker for diagnosis, follow-up and evaluation of response to therapy of several pediatric gastrointestinal diseases, ranging from IBD to nonspecific colitis and necrotizing enterocolitis...

PURPOSE: The major side effects of treatment with oxcarbazepine (OXC) are skin rash and hyponatremia. Hematologic side effects are reported rarely. The aim of this study was to investigate the rate and types of the hematologic side effects of OXC. METHODS: The medical records of 184 patients diagnosed with epilepsy or movement disorder and on OXC monotherapy, at the Department of Pediatrics of Inje University Sanggye Paik Hospital from July 2001 to July 2018, were retrospectively reviewed...

PURPOSE: Coronary artery abnormalities (CAA) are the most important complications of Kawasaki disease (KD). Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a prevalent micronutrient deficiency and its association with KD remains unknown. We hypothesized that presence of IDA could be a predictor of CAA. METHODS: This retrospective study included 173 KD patients, divided into 2 groups according to absence (group 1) and presence (group 2) of CAA. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a logistic regression model to estimate the association between CAA and other indicators...

Epidemiologic studies of Kawasaki disease (KD) have shown new pattern or change of KD occurrence and supported to infer pathophysiology or risk factors of KD from the first patient with KD reported in 1961. The incidence of KD in Northeast Asia country including Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan are 10-30 times higher than that of KD in the Unites States and Europe. Knowing true epidemiology of KD in each country and publications of update KD epidemiology also could give KD vigilance to general health care provider and general population, which definitely could give early detection of KD, early treatment, and finally reduction of coronary artery complications and mortality from KD...

The Committee on Infectious Diseases of the Korean Pediatric Society recommended immunization schedule for children and adolescents aged 18 years or younger in the 9th (2018) edition of Immunization guideline. This report provides the revised recommendations made by the committee and summarizes several changes from the 2015 guideline. National immunization program (NIP) launched a human papillomavirus (HPV) immunization for girls aged 12 years in 2016. NIP has also expanded age indication for inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) to 12 years of age in the 2018-2019 season...

Hemodynamically significant preterm patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) affects mortality; comorbidities such as necrotizing enterocolitis, intraventricular hemorrhage, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia; and adverse long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants, particularly in very low birth weight infants. However, recent studies have indicated that there is no consensus on the causal relationship between PDA and neonatal outcomes, the benefit of PDA treatment, the factors guiding the need for treatment, and optimal treatment strategies...

This meta-analysis evaluated the association between maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and the risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among children and adolescents. The search strategy was conducted until December 2018 in databases of PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus. The ORs or HRs with 95% confidence intervals (CI) extracted from eligible studies used as the common measure of association among studies. A significant association was found between overweight women and risk of ADHD among children with the pooled estimates of HR and OR, respectively (HR = 1...
