INTRODUCTION: Renal parenchymal involvement is common in systemic lymphomas. In almost all cases, renal involvement appears to be a secondary process, either by direct extension from a retroperitoneal mass or via haematogenous spread in the setting of disseminated disease. Secondary renal involvement in systemic lymphomas is generally presented as multiple masses, but also as a solitary nodule. Acute renal failure by a lymphoma infiltration of the kidney is extremely rare. Primary renal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is even more uncommon and it is a debated issue because of the absence of lymphoid tissue in normal kidneys...

Examination of the composition of saliva in patients with diabetes may be useful for understanding why oral manifestations occur and how they should be treated. The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of severity of xerostomia, salivary concentrations of glucose and urea in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, and to determine the correlation between xerostomia and salivary glucose levels. For the realization of this goal, the study included 60 patients of both sexes aged 30-70 years. The sample was divided into two groups...

The aim of our research was to evaluate the fibrinolytic capacity during oral surgical interventions - operative extraction of semi-impacted third molars having caused blood fibrinolysis activity. With the intention of establishing the condition of the blood vessels' endothelium before oral surgical interventions, the influence of surgical procedures upon the endothelium, and the response of the endothelium after interventions, the venostasis test (venous stasis) was conducted in all the subjects. This test measures the global fibrinolytic activity of the plasma, caused by anoxia...

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) form an enzyme family capable of degrading almost all extracellular matrix (ECM) and basement membrane (BM) components. They play an important role in normal tissue remodelling and growth, as well as in many destructive pathological conditions such as inflammation, tumour growth and metastasis. The role of MMPs in the breakdown of pulp tissue of teeth with pulpitis has not yet been directly elucidated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tissue levels of collagenases (MMP-1, -8, -13) and their distributions in the clinically healthy and chronically inflamed human dental pulps of 30 patients, aged 15-70 years...

The global definition of glaucoma considers it as an optic neuropathy with multifactor etiology, which affects the optic nerve head (ONH), provoking visual field loss and permanent impairment of visual function. Bearing in mind the fact that the exact pathogenic mechanism is still not completely established, glaucoma treatment strategies so far are based upon the identification of glaucoma risk factors. Among them, only elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) could undergo therapeutic treatment. However, in spite of the adequate therapy and IOP lowering, very often the disease is still progressing, leading to definite visual loss and permanent blindness...

Recruitment manoeuvre (RM) can be defined as a strategy to increase transient transpulmonary pressure. This study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of e-sigh recruitment manoeuvre on patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Thirty patients who fulfilled ARDS criteria were included in this study. They received extended sigh recruitment manoeuvre (e- sigh) consisting of positive end expiratory pressure maintained at 10 cm H₂O above the lower inflection point of the pressure--volume curve for 15 minutes...

INTRODUCTION: Several clinico-pathological characteristics such as age, sex, tumour localization, Breslow thickness, ulceration, mitotic count, vessel invasion and the presence of tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes have been identified as independent prognostic factors for relapse and overall survival of patients with skin melanoma. The aim of this study was to identify characteristics of primary melanoma which predict sentinel lymph node (SLN) positivity and the onset of regional lymph nodes metastases...

Chronic haemodyalisis is an established treatment of end stage renal disease which maintains the lives of individuals who otherwise would have succumbed to a uraemic death. However, this method of treatment raises certain psychological, social and ethical issues, where depression and stress are the most common. This article is concerned with the evaluation of depression and the psychological characteristics of patients treated by chronic maintenance haemodyalisis. Using two psychometric tests (Beck Depression Inventory and MMPI-201) we obtained a significant incidence of depression (90...

MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was prospective, observational, single-centre and included adult patients with community-acquired severe sepsis and septic shock. Demographics, clinical, laboratory and microbiological data were recorded. The main outcome measure was hospital mortality...

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is the fourth cause of pleural effusions, after pneumonia, neoinfiltrates and tuberculosis. Several questions are yet unanswered: are the pleural effusions in PE exudates or transudates, what is their size, are they unilateral or bilateral, are they only haemorrhagic, etc. The aim of this study is to determine the frequency, side, size, biochemical and cytological characteristics of pleural effusions in PE. In this study, 100 patients with suspicion of PE were examined and treated and in all the diagnosis of PE was establish...

Accurate and timely diagnostics of acute abdominal pain, a common emergency, is crucial in decreasing unnecessary surgical interventions. We present the case of a patient, Xh. M. aged 21, transported to emergency after being wakened from sleep by severe, acute abdominal pain. The pain was non-radiating, colic, and associated with flatulence, nausea and vomiting. The family history was negative regarding Angioedema, which decreases but does not exclude the possible appearance of hereditary Angioedema. All laboratory and imaging findings were normal, besides the low levels of C4 complement component were 4...

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography provides precise imaging of malignant biliopancreatic strictures and allows palliative treatment with endoscopic stenting. Initial successful biliary stenting can be achieved in about 69-100% of patients with pancreatic head malignancies. Preliminary data from our Clinic reported a much lower success rate of endoscopic biliary stenting in obstructive jaundice caused by pancreatic head malignancies. These findings may be because patients are referred at more advanced stages, which could contribute to the lower success rate of biliary stenting...

SGA (small for gestational age) is a child born with birth weight and/or length (BW/BL) under two standard deviations (2 SDS) for the gestational age and sex of the population. ~5% of all newborn children are SGA. A broad spectrum of factors are found to be causative: maternal, placental, foetal, metabolic, and genetic. In the newborn period the SGA children are at greater risk of life-threatening conditions: hypoglycaemia, hypercoagulability, necrotic enterocolitis, direct hyperbilirubinemia, hypotension, etc...

UNLABELLED: Trisomy 21, the cause of Down syndrome (DS), is the most frequent trisomy in humans. The risk for DS increases with maternal age: mothers under 25 years of age are known to have an average risk of a DS pregnancy of 1: 1600, rising to 1: 350 at age 35 and to 1: 40 at 43, respectively. Twins with DS are rare. We report on monozygotic (MZ), monochorionic twin sisters with DS, whose parents are young (24 and 26 years old, respectively) and healthy. Family history is non contributory; pregnancy and delivery were uneventful...
