REVIEW
Ryuichiro Hirano, Kenichiro Namazuda
Double filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP) is a semi-selective blood purification modality derived from the plasma exchange modality. DFPP can be applied to a variety of refractory disorders including metabolic disorders, organ transplants, rheumatic disorders, neurological disorders, and dermatologic disorders. Familial hypercholesterolemia and lipoprotein (a) hyperlipoproteinemia are major chronic metabolic disorders. Lipoprotein apheresis (LA) is applied for those patients to remove low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a))...

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal fibrosis (PF) is a major, persistent complication of prolonged peritoneal dialysis that eventually leads to peritoneal ultrafiltration failure and termination of peritoneal dialysis. Prolonged exposure to high glucose concentrations, degradation products, uremic toxins, and episodes of peritonitis can cause some changes in the peritoneal membrane, resulting in intraperitoneal inflammation and PF, leading to failure of ultrafiltration and dialysis. CA-125 can be used as a biomarker of peritoneal mesothelial cell count in the peritoneal dialysate and for monitoring cell count in PD patients...

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have identified increased blood calciprotein particle (CPP) levels as risk factors for vascular calcification and cardiovascular events in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. Although positively correlated with serum phosphate levels, serum CPP levels vary considerably among patients with similar serum phosphate levels. We investigated the capacity of the ratio of serum CPP levels to serum phosphate levels (CPP/Pi ratio) to predict cardiovascular events in incident hemodialysis patients compared to the serum calcification propensity test (T50 )...

INTRODUCTION: This study was conducted to determine the effect of the sound of running water, which we had not previously encountered being used in dialysis patients, on invasive pain and anxiety experienced during cannulation. METHODS: The research was conducted as a randomized, controlled study. A descriptive form, a VAS pain scale, and state-trait anxiety scales were used as a data collection form. The data were analyzed on SPSS version 22.00 for Windows software...

INTRODUCTION: Hybrid dialysis is widely used in Japan. Although previous reports have shown the beneficial effects of hybrid dialysis, little is known about the daily change in peritoneal ultrafiltration volume in hybrid dialysis. METHODS: A multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted in 25 patients with hybrid dialysis. The primary outcome measure was the change in peritoneal ultrafiltration volume between after HD and before HD, according to PD prescription and PD holiday...

INTRODUCTION: Previously, our institution measured peripheral blood CD34 cell counts both pre- and post-peripheral blood stem cell harvest (PBSCH), with both samples analyzed simultaneously post-PBSCH. Since 2021, we have measured pre-CD34 cell counts during PBSCH, adjusting the processed blood volume based on these results. We retrospectively evaluated how this change impacted cellular therapy. METHODS: Related healthy donors were included and divided into 1-day and 2-day harvest cohorts...

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to evaluate the characteristics of the patients with a rheumatologic disease who underwent TPE. METHOD: A single-center, retrospective study was conducted between January 2016 and June 2023. RESULTS: Twenty patients with a median age of 51 years received a median of 6 TPE sessions. Concurrently, immunosuppressive therapy was administered to 18 (90%) of them. During the follow-up period, 9 patients (45%) died. Creatinine (p = 0...

INTRODUCTION: The mortality impact of peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) remains uncertain. METHODS: A meta-analysis comparing mortality in ESRD patients on PD versus HD was conducted, including 9 studies with 7556 HD and 2651 PD patients. RESULTS: No significant difference was found in all-cause mortality, cardiovascular-related mortality, or infection-related mortality between HD and PD patients...

INTRODUCTION: Estimated continuous cardiac output (esCCO) is a novel technology that enables non-invasive and continuous monitoring of cardiac output. We compared the concordance in accuracies among esCCO measurements in the shunt limb and non-shunt limb. METHODS: In this single-center prospective observational study, we include Japanese patients who underwent dialysis at our center between April 27, 2021, and February 28, 2023. Clinical accuracy of esCCO was evaluated in the shunted and non-shunted bilateral digits...

INTRODUCTION: Autoimmune neurological diseases (ANDs) involve the immune system attacking the nervous system, leading to various symptoms. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is used to remove pathogenic autoantibodies, aiming to improve clinical outcomes. METHODS: This ambispective observational study included 99 patients with ANDs who underwent TPE from January 2018 to June 2022 at a tertiary care center in India. Clinical outcomes were measured using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores at admission, post-TPE, at 3-months, 6-months, and 1-year follow-up post-discharge...

INTRODUCTION: Peritonitis is a serious complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD), in which insufficient control of antibacterial drug concentrations poses a significant risk for poor outcomes. Predicting antibacterial drug concentrations is crucial in clinical practice. The limitations imposed by compartment models have presented a considerable challenge. METHODS: In this study, we employed machine learning as model-free methods to circumvent the constraints of compartment models...
