Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is the most common cancer of the biliary tract, constituting 80%-95% of malignant biliary tract tumors. Surgical resection is currently regarded as the sole curative treatment for GBC. Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy (HPD) has been adopted to remove the advanced gallbladder tumor together with the infiltrated parts within the liver, lower biliary tract and the peripancreatic region of GBC patients. However, patients who underwent HPD were reported to have a distinctly higher postoperative morbidity (71...

The China Infectious Disease Automated-alert and Response System (CIDARS) was successfully implemented and became operational nationwide in 2008. The CIDARS plays an important role in and has been integrated into the routine outbreak monitoring efforts of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) at all levels in China. In the CIDARS, thresholds are determined using the "Mean+2SD‟ in the early stage which have limitations. This study compared the performance of optimized thresholds defined using the "Mean +2SD‟ method to the performance of 5 novel algorithms to select optimal "Outbreak Gold Standard (OGS)‟ and corresponding thresholds for outbreak detection...

Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infection is a recognized risk factor of dementia, while its role and mechanism in Alzheimer disease (AD) remained unclarified. Our previous study has identified that injection of soluble H.pylori filtrate could induce AD-like pathologic changes and cognitive impairment in SD rats. In the present study, we further explored the effect of long-term stomach colonization of H.pylori bacteria on the brains of SD rats. The results showed that H.pylori bacteria gavage induced an efficient colonization of H...

The antisense transcript long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) (antisense non-coding RNA in the INK4 locus, ANRIL) is an antisense of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2B (CDKN2B) gene on chromosome 9p21 that contains an overlapping 299-bp region and shares a bidirectional promoter with alternate open reading frame (ARF). In the context of gene regulation, ANRIL is responsible for directly recruiting polycomb group (PcG) proteins, including polycomb repressive complex-1 (PRC-1) and polycomb repressive complex-2 (PRC-2), to modify the epigenetic chromatin state and subsequently inhibit gene expression in cis-regulation...

We report one case of pediatric acute myeloid leukemia type 2 (AML-M2) who presented with karyotypic aberration of trisomy 21 with the t(5;11) chromosomal translocation. The patient achieved complete remission after two cycles of chemotherapy of daunorubicin, cytarabine and etoposide. Then, follow-up cytogenetic analysis from bone marrow cell cultures demonstrated a normal karyotype of 46, XY. After 9 years, the patient relapsed and the karyotypic abnormalities of trisomy 21 with t(5;11) reappeared. It was concluded that trisomy 21 with t(5; 11) is a new unfavorable cytogenetic aberration in AML-M2...

Genetic mutations are important molecular biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and surveillance. Therefore, the development of methods for mutation detection characterized with straightforward, highly specific and sensitive to low-level mutations within various sequence contexts is extremely needed. Although some of the currently available methods have shown very encouraging results, their discrimination efficiency is still very low. Herein, we demonstrate a fluorescent probe coupled with blocker and property of melting temperature discrimination, which is able to identify the presence of known or unknown single-base variations at abundances down to 0...

The issue as to whether hospital ownership has an impact on the quality of care has long been a serious concern. Hand hygiene (HH) compliance is regarded as an important indicator of the quality of care in the control of hospital-acquired infections. However, little information is available on whether hospital ownership influences HH compliance. In this study, of 229 hospitals selected from Hubei province in China, 152 were public and 77 were private hospitals. A total of 23 652 healthcare workers (HCWs) were surveyed, using a convenience sampling...

The intubation of conventional transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) probes into patients causes serious esophagus irritation, and thus the use of TEE probes in pediatric practice is limited. In this study, we aimed at the development of a special probe which could be inserted through the nasopharyngeal cavity into the esophagus to obtain the same high-quality echocardiography images as those obtained by conventional TEE and improve patients' experience. During the examination, the patients felt relaxed for a longer time and cooperated with the sonographers in the process of cardiac catheterization conducted in the surgery room or the intensive care unit (ICU), resulting in improved accuracy of the diagnosis and timely administration of appropriate treatment...

Haploinsufficiency of the runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) gene is widely known to be responsible for cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD). To date, more than 190 mutations in Runx2 gene have been reported to be related to CCD. In this study, a novel mutation of Runx2 gene was observed in a female with CCD. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral venous blood of the proband and eleven members of her family. Genetic testing on these twelve people identified a novel missense mutation (c.895 T>C, Y299H) in exon 5 of the RUNX2 gene in the proband...

HBV-associated acute-on-chronic liver failure is prevalent in mainland China. The prognosis of HBV-ACLF is poor. The mortality of HBV-ACLF is approximately 80%. Therefore, a prognostic indicator was needed in order to allow us to intervene as soon as possible. The model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) scoring system is widely used to predict the prognosis of liver failure. However, the assessment is too complex to restrict its application. This study aimed to investigate the expression of IP-10 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), in order to explore the relationship between the expression and prognosis of patients with HBV-ACLF...
