The extract of the White Sea sponge Halichondria panicea (Pallas, 1766) exhibits cytotoxic and cytostatic effects. The main part of the extract consists of hydrophilic low molecular weight compounds: free amino acids (13.9%), glucose (19.9%), polyatomic alcohols (glycerin and others) (6.1%), carboxylic acids (0.7%) and nitrogenous heterocycles (1.2%). Of the substances specific to the metabolome, bicyclic diketopiperazines (four derivatives), pyroglutamic acid, phenylacetic acid, and two steroids (3β,5α)cholest-7-en-3-ol and dihydrocholesterol were identified...

Phenolic compounds were extracted from biphasic olive pomace and their biological potential was characterised. Two different extracts were prepared, E1 (40% methanol) and E2 (80% methanol), both subjected to agitation (180 min) and 70 °C. LC-ESI-qTOF-MS was used for individual quantification of the extracted phenolic compounds. The antioxidant activity was determined using different methods, including nitric oxide, DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and hydroxyl radical. The enzymes α-amylase and α-glucosidase were used to evaluate the antihyperglycemic potential and sulforhodamine B and MTT (tetrazolium salt) for antitumor activity...

The chemical composition and biological activities of the essential oils obtained from Serbian Artemisia species ( A. alba , A. absinthium, A. annua, A. vulgaris, and A. scoparia ) were analysed. The essential oil was obtained by merging several samples (same plant species, different localities) and the chemical composition was compared with pre-merging results. In the merged A. scoparia sample four components were not found in any pre-merging sample and one of those is present in the highest percentage (capillin 35...

Mitragyna speciosa , also known as Kratom, is an evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia that has been used in traditional medicine to relieve pain. The primary active alkaloid, mitragynine, found in Kratom leaves affects the same µ-receptor as the opioids. The potential effects of Kratom leaves on humans draw international concerns. The purpose of this study is to develop an efficient extraction method for mitragynine from dried Kratom leaves. Mitragynine was extracted from grounded Kratom leaves by liquid-liquid extraction and detected by an HPLC system with a C-18 column...

Accumulating evidence suggests that dietary fructose may play a role in the hyperuricaemia development, but the precise mechanism remains unclear. Hyperuricaemia is characterised by excessive production and deposition of urate crystals, and the metabolism of fructose has been implicated in the elevation of serum urate levels. The association between fructose intake and the risk of hyperuricaemia is explained by the metabolism of fructose in the liver, small intestine, and kidney. Many studies have confirmed the correlation between fructose consumption and an increased risk of developing hyperuricaemia, but more prospective studies to fully elucidate the role of fructose intake in the pathogenesis of hyperuricaemia are needed...
