Breaking bad news regarding health care traditionally falls within the scope of practice of the provider. However, now that lab and diagnostic results are uploaded directly to smart devices, patients often receive results before they can be explained. The nurse or nursing student may be the first person the patient sees after reading results and the first to respond to patient questions about bad news. This article describes a simulation where senior baccalaureate students utilize the SPIKES protocol to become better prepared to field questions and break bad news should they find themselves in this situation...

AIM: The aim of the study was to establish reliability and validity of the Competency Assessment in Simulation of Electronic Health Records (CASE) tool. BACKGROUND: Effective teaching and learning practices, including valid and reliable assessment of students' electronic health record (EHR) competency, contribute to safe, high-quality, efficient nursing care. METHOD: The study used a mixed-methods design to test reliability and validity of the CASE tool...

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the development and impact of a project to create a statewide test bank of Next Generation NCLEX®-style items. BACKROUND: Using a train-the-trainer model, champions created an open access resource of Next Generation NCLEX-style items to use to teach clinical judgment and then trained peers on item writing and test bank use. METHOD: Stufflebeam's CIPP (context, inputs, process, and products) model provided the framework for the evaluation...

AIM: The aim of this study was to examine the impact of reverse-role simulation on nursing students' empathy levels toward ethnoculturally diverse patients. BACKGROUND: Empathy is an essential component of culturally competent care; however, it is often left out of cultural competence education. Enhancing nursing students' cultural empathy may benefit students and patients. METHOD: The study used a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design in a private nursing school in the Northeast...

Compassion is an essential value held by the nursing profession, but many nurses demonstrate incivility that may originate from their experiences in nursing academia. The Incivility in Nursing Education-Revised tool was used at a community college nursing program to gain student perspectives on incivility. Watson's theory of human caring influenced this study. Participants were surveyed about types and frequencies of perceived faculty incivility. At least 77.8 percent of participants observed some degree of incivility in the program...

AIM: The aim of this concept analysis was to develop a comprehensive definition of nursing student success. BACKGROUND: Nursing student success has traditionally been viewed as timely program completion and passing the licensure exam on the first attempt. Little consideration has been given to holistic indicators of success that are inclusive of student well-being and mastery of self-care skills. METHOD: Nursing student success was examined using Walker and Avant's eight-step process of concept analysis...

Caring is a fundamental professional nursing value. This study examined the effect of the clinical learning environment (CLE) on nursing students' caring behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Valuing nursing work in the CLE increased the knowledge and skills aspect of caring behavior. Higher CLE scores in affordances and engagement and student centeredness increased the respectful deference of others and positive connectedness aspects of caring behaviors. These results may inform efforts to promote aspects of nursing students' caring behaviors during global health emergencies by enhancing the value of nursing work, engagement, and student-focused qualities of the CLE...

The study's aim was to examine students' perceptions of group work taught in a block model in the first unit of an undergraduate nursing program. The study used a qualitative descriptive design with open-ended questions. Data from 27 students were analyzed using thematic analysis. Three main themes emerged from the data: 1) unmet expectations, 2) cognitive and metacognitive strategies (subtheme, reflection), and 3) engagement. The benefits and challenges associated with group work using the block model are highlighted, along with implications for education, practice, and further research...

Nursing students develop their professional "self" through clinical placement experiences. Aesthetic expression can be used as a means to reflect students' personal knowing and to convey self as nurtured during their clinical journey. In a postconference session of the Basic Nursing Care Practicum course, six students were asked to draw pictures reflecting their clinical experience and then share their stories. It appeared that nursing students learned the meaning of nursing and caring, and through these meanings, their actual self as nurses was also developed...

Current education for prelicensure students addresses informatics, typically focusing on theory, terminology, and an overview of systems. This leaves health partners with the burden of teaching "bedside" informatics skills. Utilizing an innovative new model, a course was developed to bridge the gap between theory and practical application. Students join mock clinical practice councils and perform chart audits to understand the important role of informatics in quality improvement. By using practical bedside informatics tools and applications, students learn to improve patient outcomes and safe care environments in alignment with current expectations...

Team-based learning (TBL) is an evidence-based teaching-learning strategy increasingly used in nursing education to improve student learning outcomes. Few studies have focused on its effects on the critical thinking disposition of second-degree nursing students enrolled in accelerated, entry-level master's programs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of TBL on the critical thinking disposition of entry-level master's nursing students. Critical thinking disposition scores did not significantly improve, but students' confidence in reasoning skills and intellectual curiosity were strengthened, suggesting that TBL is an instructional strategy worth pursuing in entry-level master's nursing programs...

Advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) students face challenges transitioning to practice. They benefit greatly from simulated learning experiences that build confidence and increase competence in the skills needed to perform in an APRN role. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a simulated adolescent well visit in an advanced health assessment course. Using a pretest/posttest design, qualitative and quantitative data were collected from participants. Results included high learner satisfaction, an increase in both self-reported competence and confidence, and an appreciation for the "safe space" of learning...

New nurse graduates are ill prepared to fulfill the roles and responsibilities of being competent, practice-ready registered nurses. This article describes one college of nursing's journey in the creation of a clinical tracking document (CTD) to track, in real time, essential subbehavior actions that assist students in achieving the four main competencies of assessment, communication, critical thinking, and safety listed on the Creighton Competency Evaluation Instrument. The CTD is an innovative tracking tool used to ensure students are practice-ready and competent upon completion of their nursing program...
