BACKGROUND: Clinical research on arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is typically limited by small patient numbers, retrospective study designs, and inconsistent definitions. AIM: To create a large national ACM patient cohort with a vast amount of uniformly collected high-quality data that is readily available for future research. METHODS: This is a multicentre, longitudinal, observational cohort study that includes (1) patients with a definite ACM diagnosis, (2) at-risk relatives of ACM patients, and (3) ACM-associated mutation carriers...

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the opinion of Dutch cardiologists on coronary microvascular disease (CMD) and its management in clinical practice, and to assess the need for a CMD guideline among Dutch cardiologists. METHODS: We developed an online questionnaire including different aspects of CMD which was reviewed by an expert panel. The questionnaire was distributed by e‑mail among all members of the Dutch Society of Cardiology. RESULTS: A total of 103 cardiologists (70% male) completed the questionnaire (response rate: 10%)...

INTRODUCTION: Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (EBCR) is part of the management of patients who have suffered an acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Patients with a reduced ejection fraction (EF) comprise a higher-risk subgroup and are referred less often for these programmes. This study aimed at assessing the impact of the baseline EF on the functional benefits, as assessed by peak oxygen uptake (pVO2 ) and exercise duration, of an EBCR programme in AMI survivors. METHODS: Observational, retrospective cohort study including all patients admitted to a tertiary centre due to an AMI who completed a phase II EBCR programme after discharge, between November 2012 and April 2017...

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of a history of malignancy in patients with chest pain who were referred for computed tomography angiography as well as the long-term survival and cardiovascular outcomes, including coronary artery disease (CAD) and coronary artery calcium (CAC) percentiles of cancer survivors. These data are relevant since it is unknown how cancer survivors, who underwent cardio-toxic therapies, should be monitored. METHODS: We analysed all patients with chest pain, who came to the outpatient clinic and underwent computed tomography angiography...

BACKGROUND: Healthy atrial fibrillation (AF) patients will eventually outgrow their low thromboembolic risk. The purpose of this study is to compare the development of cardiovascular disease in healthy AF patients as compared to healthy sinus rhythm patients and to assess appropriate anticoagulation treatment. METHODS: Forty-one idiopathic paroxysmal AF patients (56 ± 10 years, 66% male) were compared with 45 healthy sinus rhythm patients. Patients were free of hypertension, antihypertensive and antiarrhythmic drugs, diabetes, congestive heart failure, coronary artery or peripheral vascular disease, previous stroke, thyroid, pulmonary and renal disease, and structural abnormalities on echocardiography...

PURPOSE: To describe reasons for referral, diagnostic procedures, diagnoses and long-term follow-up of first-time referred patients to a fast lane outpatient cardiology clinic (FLOCC). METHODS: A descriptive report of results obtained in a newly organised outpatient clinic. Data up to final diagnosis were recorded from electronic medical records. Follow-up data were obtained from electronic medical records, contacting patients and/or their general practitioners...

BACKGROUND: Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are prescribed to patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) to reduce the risk of stroke. Prescribing the correct dose warrants careful consideration of the prevailing dose criteria that differ per NOAC. Electronic systems are useful to intercept prescriptions that are incorrect based on simple 'primary' criteria, for example dosing frequency and drug-drug interactions with concomitant medication. However, these systems do not take into account patient characteristics such as age, renal function or weight, which are crucial elements to determine the NOAC dose...

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the incidence, angiographic predictors, and impact of stent thrombosis (ST). BACKGROUND: Given the high mortality after ST, this study emphasises the importance of ongoing efforts to identify angiographic predictors of ST. METHODS: All consecutive patients with angiographically confirmed ST between 2010 and 2016 were 1:4 matched for (1) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) indication and (2) index date ±6 weeks to randomly selected controls...

BACKGROUND: Sex differences in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) have been reported, but little is known about the situation in the Netherlands. METHODS: This registry is a merge of available data on ACS patients in the electronic data capture systems of 11 centres with 24/7 interventional cardiology services. We included patients >18 years undergoing a cardiac catheterisation between 2010-2012. We evaluated sex differences in clinical and procedural characteristics and 1‑year mortality...
