Atlanto-axial instability (AAI) is a congenital or developmental condition that leads to instability/subluxation of the atlantoaxial joint. This study is performed to determine anatomic feasibility of trajectory L and help select an optimal screw trajectory in treating patients with AAI with a narrow C1 posterior arch. Sixty patients who underwent cervical three dimensional-computed tomography (3D-CT) were chosen from the hospital's picture archiving and communication system (PACS). Aquilion Multi 64 helical CT was used to perform CT examinations and measurements on patients...

The effects of ureteral stent diameters on ureteral stent-related symptoms were evaluated by using Turkish-validated Ureteral Stent Related Symptoms Questionnaire (USSQ). Datas on 126 patients underwent uncomplicated flexible ureterorenoscopy and 62 patients underwent uncomplicated semirigid ureteroscopy surgery without stent insertion (group 3) were collected. Patients were randomized preoperatively in a double-blind fashion to 4.8 French (group 1) and 6 French (group 2) ureteral JJ stents groups. The first follow-up visit was done at one week after surgery for all groups...

Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is a hospital-acquired bacterial infection with high incidence and mortality rate. The aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between the Endocan level and development of VAP and whether or not this correlation was correlated with the clinical findings. Demographic data, white blood cell (WBC) count, procalcitonin (PCT), c-reactive protein (CRP), and fever levels of 60 patients were recorded in serial measurements for 5 days. When there was the presence of fever or elevated Endocan, alveolar lavage culture was taken and chest radiographies were taken...

Hepatitis C virus core antigen (HCV-Ag) immunoassay has been proposed as a more cost and time efficient one-step alternative to the current two-step screening and diagnostic process. This study investigates the correlation between the HCV-Ag immunoassay and the current gold standard of Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecular assay. Stored sera of 221 consecutive treatment-naive patients tested anti-HCV positive were selected to undergo both HCV-Ag immunoassay and HCV RNA molecular assay. Active infection status and HCV genotype were determined using both assays, and correlation was calculated using a logarithmic scale...

The present study describes the predicted model and functional characterization of an endochitinase (30 kDa) from corms of Gladiolus grandiflorus. ESI-QTOF-MS generated peptide showed 96% sequence homology with family 18, Class III acidic endochitinase of Gladiolus gandavensis. Purified G. grandiflorus chitinase (GgChi) hydrolyzed 4-methylumbelliferyl β-d-N,N',N''-triacetylchitotriose substrate showing specific endochitinase activity. Since no structural details of GgChi were available in the Protein Data Bank (PDB), a homology model was predicted using the coordinate information of Crocus vernus chitinase (PDB ID: 3SIM)...

Mutations of the p53 gene are the most common genomic alterations associated with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and are reported in 60-88% cases. Despite the high incidence of such mutations, there is no consensus about the clinical application of p53 detection in breast cancer management. This study investigates the prognostic value of immunohistochemically detected p53 in TNBC patients who received adjuvant chemotherapy. We reviewed the clinicopathologic features of 1088 TNBC patients who received curative surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy...

There is an increasing trend in the incidence of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP-NENs) worldwide. The aim of the present study was to identify the prognostic factors of patients with GEP-NENs. A cross-sectional, retrospective chart review study was conducted among patients with pathologically proven GEP-NENs between January 2003 and December 2016 at Kaohsiung Chung-Gung Memorial Hospital. A total of 97 patients who met the inclusion criteria were included (male/female = 56/41, age: 57...

Cardiovascular fitness exerts directly beneficial effects on functional and cognitive outcomes in patients of chronic stroke. However, the effect of early rehabilitation on cardiovascular function has not yet been thoroughly examined. We tested whether complementary rehabilitation program could influence cardiovascular fitness in an early stage of stroke patients. The associations for post-acute stroke functional recovery with cardiovascular fitness were explored. Thirty-seven patients with mean poststroke interval of 8...
