OBJECTIVES: To establish the effectiveness of Alternate Rapid Maxillary Expansion and Constriction combined with Protraction Facial Mask (Alt-RAMEC/PFM) approach in treating Class III growing patients compared with PFM combined with conventional Rapid Maxillary Expansion (RME/PFM). Search sources: Unrestricted search in five electronic databases and manual searching were undertaken up to February 2018. DATA SELECTION: Randomised clinical trials (RCTs) evaluating the effectiveness of Alt-RAMEC/PFM were selected...

OBJECTIVES: Tooth wear, additional to the physiologic alterations of the dentition, may occur during orthodontic treatment. The objective of the present review was to investigate systematically the literature relevant to its progression in patients having undergone comprehensive orthodontic treatment. DATA SOURCES: Search without restrictions in eight databases since inception and hand searching until October 2017 was performed. DATA SELECTION: Studies evaluating tooth wear immediately before and after the completion of orthodontic treatment with fixed appliance were evaluated independently and in duplicate...

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess enamel gloss changes induced by orthodontic bracket bonding with a light-cured composite or a light-cured resin-reinforced glass ionomer cement. SETTING: The Department of Biomaterials, School of Dentistry, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. DESIGN: Laboratory study. METHODS: A total of twenty extracted upper human first premolars were included in this study and each tooth served as a control for itself...

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of micro-osteoperforation (MOP) on rate of orthodontic tooth movement and pain perception with fixed appliances. DESIGN: 2 arm parallel randomized controlled trial with an allocation ratio of 1:1. SETTING: The outpatient department of a dental college. PARTICIPANTS: 105 patients were screened, out of which 60 met the inclusion criteria and consented to participate; consisting of 33 females and 27 males requiring en-masse retraction following first premolar extractions...

OBJECTIVE: To study the biomechanical effects of the three-piece intrusion arch and Kalra simultaneous intrusion and retraction arch (K-SIR) on simultaneous intrusion and retraction of maxillary anterior teeth. DESIGN: Three-dimensional analysis of stresses and displacement of the anterior and posterior teeth with the three-piece intrusion arch and K-SIR arch was done using the finite element method (FEM). SETTING: Department of Orthodontics, Surendera Dental College and Research Institute, India...

OBJECTIVE: To obtain the opinion of British Orthodontic Society (BOS) members in relation to possible patterns of prescription of orthodontic extractions over the past 5-10 years and to relate any changes identified to treatment objectives, facial and smile aesthetics, and treatment strategies and adjuncts. DESIGN: Cross-sectional questionnaire. SETTING: On-line survey of BOS members. METHODS: A 14-item on-line questionnaire was sent to orthodontic practitioners for completion...

Root resorption is a common but undesirable side-effect of orthodontic treatment. It is a well-recognised phenomenon largely associated with impacted or unerupted teeth and in most cases, is mild and does not affect longevity of the affected teeth. This case report of a medically fit and healthy Caucasian boy who was undergoing orthodontic treatment at the Eastman Dental Hospital, UCLH (EDH) for management of his severe hypodontia, presents an unusual incident of bilateral resorption of his maxillary first permanent molars by the unerupted second molars...

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of Orthodontic treatment in the National Health Service (NHS) hospitals in England and to identify factors that may be predictive of the duration of Orthodontic treatment and number of patients' visits. DESIGN: Retrospective service evaluation. SETTING: The orthodontic departments of two NHS hospitals. METHODS: The data were collected from the clinical notes, the hospital data base and the pre- and post-treatment study models of 70 patients who were treated with fixed appliances...

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a psychiatric disorder in which the individual has a disproportionate concern about a particular body part. With the increasing demand for aesthetic treatments, it is likely that individuals with BDD may present for orthodontic or combined orthodontic and orthognathic treatment. In this review, we shall outline the features of BDD and its prevalence, before discussing the best way for clinicians to identify and manage individuals with this disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Intrusive forces on anterior brackets are preferable for avoiding overbite deepening. Reversing plain L-loops may create such advantageous force system during space closure. DESIGN: Force systems of reversed L-loops were compared with T-loops at three interbracket distances (IBD). SETTING: Computational study. METHODS: Using finite element analysis, loop response during simulated loop-pulling was determined for plain reversed L- and T-loop configurations at three IBDs and two sizes...

Premolar migration is an infrequent and unusual phenomenon. Although several cases of distal premolar migration have been reported in the literature, the management of these cases is often challenging and to date, there are no agreed guidelines regarding best practice. This report describes two cases of distal migration of a lower second permanent premolar with sequential panoramic imaging mapping the progress of the teeth as they migrated distally. Cone Beam Computerised Tomography was subsequently used in one case to locate the migrated premolars' precise position...

Acrylate allergies have been reported in dental professionals as a result of repeat exposure to various acrylate monomers and in dental patients with removable prostheses or longstanding composite restorations. To date, there is only one report of an allergic reaction in a young patient from small volumes of resin-based orthodontic adhesive. This case report demonstrates a recent case of gingival inflammation and lip oedema attributed to an acrylate allergy arising from the composite adhesive used with fixed appliances...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between genetic polymorphisms in RANK, RANKL and OPG with maxillary and mandibular dimensions in humans. DESIGN: DNA extracted from saliva and the rs3826620, rs9594738 and rs2073618 polymorphisms in RANK, RANKL and OPG, respectively, were analysed by real-time PCR. Four linear measurements (Co-Gn, GoPg, Co-Go and PTM-A) from lateral cephalograms were examined for the evaluation of craniofacial measurements...
