BACKGROUND: In systemic inflammatory conditions, inflammatory cytokines can cause low thyroid hormone levels. There are no reports discussing the relation between thyroid hormone levels and response to treatment for Kawasaki disease. METHODS: We investigated 67 patients who underwent treatment in the acute phase of Kawasaki disease. We divided patients into two groups based on their response to initial intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment: the responder group (n = 40), and the non-responder group (n = 27)...

BACKGROUND: Biotinidase deficiency is caused by absent activity of the biotinidase, encoded by the biotinidase gene (BTD). Affected individuals cannot recycle the biotin, leading to heterogeneous symptoms that are primarily neurological and cutaneous. Early treatment with biotin supplementation can prevent irreversible neurological damage and is recommended for patients with profound deficiency, defined as enzyme activity <10% mean normal (MN). Molecular testing has been utilized along with biochemical analysis for diagnosis and management...

BACKGROUND: The phenomenon of sharenting has led to an increase in children's digital presence on social media platforms, particularly Instagram. This study aimed to examine the relationship between features of mothers' Instagram use and their sharing of photos related to their children. METHODS: The present study was conducted with 130 mothers of children who applied to our university hospital and who had an Instagram account and allowed us to follow them. The mothers completed an online questionnaire that consisted of parents' sociodemographic data and data regarding social media use characteristics...

BACKGROUND: The urine protein to creatinine ratio (UPCR) correlates well with the 24-h urine protein test (24-h UPT) and is a reliable indicator of proteinuria. However, in nephrotic syndrome, the correlation between the UPCR and the 24-h UPT tends to decrease. To address this, we introduced the fractional excretion of total protein (FETP), which reflects serum total protein and creatinine levels because severe hypoproteinemia and/or elevated serum creatinine levels tend to occur under these conditions...

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the prevalence of post COVID-19 condition (PCC) in Taiwanese children, explored common symptoms and behavioral manifestations in children with PCC, and examined potential associations with parental stress and family functioning. METHODS: A total of 116 children who had contracted COVID-19 and their parents participated. At 1 month after the confirmed COVID-19 infection (baseline), the parents were asked to complete a questionnaire about the post COVID-19 symptoms, the child behavior checklist (CBCL) based on the child's situation, also the impact event scale of COVID-19 (IES-C) and family APGAR based on the parents' own situation...

BACKGROUND: Cerebellar injury is one of the perinatal complications in preterm infants. Recent studies have highlighted the effect of perinatal complications on neurological morbidity. We investigated the perinatal risk factors and morbidity for cerebellar injury in extremely premature infants. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 285 infants born between April 2009 and December 2020 at gestational age <28 weeks at our institution. The infants were divided into two groups based on magnetic resonance imaging findings: those with and without cerebellar injury...
