Aim of this article is to give an overview of the technical background and the advantages of modern devices for different applications of cryoablation in cranio-orbital neurosurgery. The treatment of orbital lesions is complicated by the complex and potentially inapparent anatomy due to retro-orbital fat. With the help of cryoprobes different well-defined lesions such as cavernous venous malformations can be safely and effectively removed thanks to the cryoadhesive effect. Their use has been described in several different approaches including traditional lateral or transcranial orbitotomy but also anterior transconjunctival as well as transnasal endoscopic approaches...

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of large vessel vasculitis (LVV) is often challenging due to the various clinical appearances and the low prevalence. Hybrid imaging by positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET/CT) is a highly relevant imaging modality for diagnostics and disease surveillance but may be associated with a significant amount of radiation dose especially in patients with complications. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective analysis was to compare the image quality and impact of hybrid imaging methods PET/CT and PET/MRI on the potential for dose reduction...

At the beginning of the 2000s the Austrian public universities were characterized by staffing rigidities, little competitive research, outdated study curricula and free access to all fields of study, the latter combined with high dropout rates and long study durations. As a countermeasure the universities were granted full legal capacity. For new employees the status of civil servants was herewith cancelled and, being now subject to the Employment Act, tenured employments for anyone who wanted to stay at the university were no longer possible...

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a severe, chronic multisystemic disease which, depending on its severity, can lead to considerable physical and cognitive impairment, loss of ability to work and the need for nursing care including artificial nutrition and, in very severe cases, even death. The aim of this D-A-CH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) consensus statement is 1) to summarize the current state of knowledge on ME/CFS, 2) to highlight the Canadian Consensus Criteria (CCC) as clinical criteria for diagnostics with a focus on the leading symptom post-exertional malaise (PEM) and 3) to provide an overview of current options and possible future developments, particularly with regard to diagnostics and therapy...

This guideline is intended to provide practical guidance for the diagnosis and treatment of haemophilia in Austria. Few randomized controlled interventional trials are available addressing the treatment of haemophilia, therefore recommendations are usually based on low level of evidence and represent expert consensus. This guideline is based on the WFH guideline, published in 2020, and adapted according to the national circumstances and experience. It includes recommendations and suggestions for diagnosis and follow-up visits and pharmacological therapies for treatment and prophylaxis...

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous coronary intervention is a well-established revascularization strategy for patients with coronary artery disease. Recent technical advances such as radial access, third generation drug-eluting stents and highly effective antiplatelet therapy have substantially improved the safety profile of coronary procedures. Despite several practice guidelines and a clear patient preference of early hospital discharge, the percentage of coronary procedures performed in an outpatient setting in Austria remains low, mostly due to safety concerns...

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous coronary intervention is a well-established revascularization strategy for patients with coronary artery disease. The safety and feasibility of performing these procedures on a same-day discharge basis for selected patients has been studied in a large number of mostly nonrandomized trials. An up to date literature review should focus on trials with radial access, representing the current standard for coronary procedures in Austria and other European countries...
