This study presented the influence of two types of clay: kaolin (Kao) and red clay (RC) on the chemical and physical properties of ceramic specimens when galvanic sludge (GS) is incorporated to encapsulate heavy metals. Samples were obtained of GS from the industrial district of Manaus - Amazonas State, Brazil, and kaolin (Kao), and red clay (RC) from the Central Amazon. A fourth sample was prepared by mixing GS, Kao, and RC in the ratio 1:1:8 (GS + Kao + RC). This mixture was ground, and ceramic specimens were prepared, and heat treated at 950 °C and 1200 °C for three hours for phase detection, compressive strength, leaching of Fe, Ni and Cr metals and life cycle assessment...

Most of the existing municipal waste management (MWM) systems focus on the optimization of the waste disposal center locations and waste collection paths, which can be modeled based on the location-routing problem (LRP). This study models a green MWM system by a three-objective location-routing problem to achieve equilibrium among the total cost, carbon emission, and residential satisfaction. The amount of waste demand for each customer is considered as an independent discrete random variable following a normal distribution...

Landfill disposal is a major approach of disposing municipal solid waste (MSW) in China. In order to explore the impact of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated by landfill on the air quality of regional environment, Jiangcungou landfill in Xi'an and its surrounding area were taken as a research object to analyze the spatial distribution and seasonal variation patterns of non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) and VOCs components through seasonal sampling of regional NMHC concentration and VOCs concentration (116 species)...

The interest in mass-rearing black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae for food and feed is rapidly increasing. This is partly sparked by the ability of the larvae to efficiently valorise a wide range of organic waste and by-products. Primarily, research has focused on the larval stage, hence underprioritizing aspects of the adult biology, and knowledge on reproduction-related traits such as egg production is needed. We investigated the impact of different organic waste and by-products as larval diets on various life-history traits of adult black soldier flies in a large-scale experimental setup...

Dealing with overconsumption and the waste crisis requires consumers to make a drastic lifestyle change, adopting more circular consumption patterns that support the prevention of waste generation. The goal of our study was to explore the range of precycling behaviors aimed at preventing waste generation in households. We tested the hypotheses of the Motivation Opportunity Ability framework using a nationally representative survey of consumers residing in Finland (n = 1,000). Respondents reported a high level of motivation, moderate level of opportunity and ability and engaged in precycling occasionally...

The DES treatment was carried out using choline chloride and formic acid (1:2 M ratio) at various temperatures (90, 110 and 130 °C) and treatment times (20, 40 and 60 min) at a solid-to-solvent ratio of 1:10 g mL-1 . Significant quantities of Posidonia oceanica deposit on some beaches and coastlines every year, which generates high costs associated with the disposal of this waste. Pyrolysis may be an adequate way for its valorization. However, it would imply to know how the process takes place and if the removal of its natural detrital inorganic matter (epiphytes, marine salt and sand) is necessary, which are the objectives of this research. Pyrolysis by thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry was carried out on both the washed and unwashed samples...

High-salt stress significantly decreased lipopeptide production in the B. amyloliquefaciens HM618 and ALE strains. Electronic waste recycling companies have proliferated in many countries due to valuable materials present in end-of-life electronic and electrical equipment. This article examined the business characteristics and management performance of Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA), a Canadian nationwide electronic product stewardship organization. The organization's annual performance reports, from 2012 to 2020, for nine Canadian provinces in which it currently operates were aggregated and analyzed. Temporal analysis using regression and Mann-Kendall tests were employed, and five characteristics of EPRA's business were analyzed, including e-waste products collected, number of drop-off locations, efforts to build public awareness, operating expenses, and growth of e-waste stewardship...

In this study, manganese ore and ilmenite as OCs are introduced into RK during waste combustion, focusing on their effects on the bottom ashes and the behavior of alkali and heavy metals...

Phosphate tailings (PT) was used to reduce the release of heavy metals (HMs) during pyrolysis and the leachable rate of residual HMs, and simultaneously improve the bioavailability of phosphorus in the sludge-based biochar. The concentration of heavy metals and the fractions determined by BCR method was used to investigate the release and the transformation of Zn, Pb, Mn, Ni and Cu during pyrolysis involved with the effects of temperature and the addition of PT. The respective pyrolysis experiments shows that the release of Zn and Pb increases with temperature for both sewage sludge (SS) and PT, and the bioavailable fractions (F1 + F2) of Mn, Ni, and Cu increases with temperature for PT...

To effectively recycle digestate back into soils, it is crucial to understand how operational variables in the AcoD process influence the conversion of organic matter (OM). Composting municipal food waste is a key strategy for beneficially reusing methane-producing waste that would otherwise occupy landfill space. However, land-applied compost can cycle per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) back into the food supply and the environment.
