Lupus nephritis (LN) affects almost two-thirds of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Despite initial aggressive therapy, up to 25% of patients with LN will progress to permanent renal damage. Conventional serum markers for LN lack the sensitivity of an ideal biomarker. Urinary kidney injury molecule-1 (UKIM-1) is an excellent biomarker for early diagnosis of acute kidney injury and predicting renal outcomes. This study intended to determine the predictive performance of UKIM-1 among LN patients in response to induction therapy by assessing and correlating its levels with renal disease activity...

Lupus nephritis (LN) affects almost two-thirds of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Renal biopsy is the gold standard for the diagnosis of LN. However, repeated biopsies are not always performed in clinical practice, and they carry some risk. Therefore, minimally invasive techniques, as urinary biomarkers, are promising tools for the diagnosis and monitoring of SLE. Previous studies evaluated urinary monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) in patients with SLE, reported higher levels of urinary MCP-1 in patients with active LN than non-active LN...

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is linked to high mortality, mainly when discovered in its advanced stages. Several studies have pointed to the role of epigenetic factors in CRC and other cancers. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in the initiation, progression, metastasis, and modulation of the response to chemotherapeutic modalities of CRC as vital contributors to epigenetic mechanisms. Colon cancer-associated transcript-1 (CCAT1) is one of the lncRNAs that have been dysregulated in serum samples, providing a non-invasive route for diagnosing CRC patients...

Hepatitis B virus infection is the 10th leading cause of death around the world. Occult HBV infection (OBI) represents those with a viral load of < 104 IU/ml. Among permanent blood recipients, OBI appears to be the most common cause of posttransfusion hepatitis. Moreover, OBI may reduce hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment responsiveness in people with chronic HCV infection, and OBI may become acutely reactivated when on immunosuppression or potentially contribute to chronic liver disease. Since most previous studies used either small sample sizes, diverse populations, or were cross-sectional in design, it is possible that using multiple techniques with varying sensitivity for HBV DNA measurement in the liver or serum will shed light on discrepancies in the impact of OBI in cases with chronic liver disease...

Infection is the second most common cause of mortality among end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients. Uremic toxins are the main cause of impaired immune response among ESKD patients. Klotho gene, the anti-aging gene, encodes the transmembrane alpha klotho (αKL) protein which acts as an obligate coreceptor for fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). Klotho protein may play a role in immune cell functions, particularly in anti-inflammatory response; however, its role is still incompletely understood. In the present study, we aimed to measure αKL protein expression on peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) among hemodialysis (HD) patients, and we assumed that decreased αKL expression on PBLs may contribute to the impaired immunity among HD patients...

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a musculoskeletal disorder characterized by diffuse chronic musculoskeletal pain associated with various other symptoms. Although the etiology and pathogenesis of FMS are still unclear, it was reported to have a possible inflammatory basis. No laboratory marker is currently available to diagnose the disease. This study aimed to search for biomarkers useful in diagnosis of FMS. We assessed blood erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW), and serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), as inflammatory markers in primary FMS patients and their relationship with disease severity and depression scores...

Despite their low prevalence, autoimmune liver diseases (AILD) cause liver cirrhosis, progress and leads to mortality from liver failure. Autoantibodies are confirmed to have significance in the early screening of AILD patients, especially in those who are asymptomatic before onset of clinical signs. This study aimed to assess levels of liver autoantibodies and their association with clinical manifestations of autoimmune liver diseases and chronic viral hepatitis (CVH) patients. This case-control study included 50 patients (case group of 25 patients with AILD and control group of 25 patients with CVH)...

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection has a variety of clinical outcomes, and host genetic factors play an important role in this process. Cytokines are important factors in mediating and controlling the inflammatory process during H. pylori infection. Interleukin-8 (IL-8) plays a critical role in the epithelial cell response to H. pylori infection and the development of H. pylori-related gastric disorders. The IL-8 gene has an A/T base pair polymorphism in the promoter region (-251), which has been linked to an increase in interleukin production by gastric epithelial cells...

Thyroid nodules are frequently found, but the vast majority of them are benign. The difficulty in managing thyroid nodules is correctly diagnosing the minority of those who have malignancy. Thyroid fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) with indeterminate cytology continues to raise doubts about the presence of thyroid cancer, leading to an unnecessary thyroidectomy. Circulating miRNAs may be useful as diagnostic and prognostic markers for a variety of cancers, including thyroid cancer. The goal of the present study was to determine the predictive value of serum miRNA-146b expression level for thyroid cancer by estimating its level in a group of euthyroid patients with thyroid nodules with indeterminate FNAC results...

Asthma is a heterogeneous disease that affects a large proportion of the global population and is distinguished by airway hyperresponsiveness to direct and indirect stimulations. It is a multifactorial disease that is triggered by heredity and environmental causes. Tenascin C (TNC) is an extracellular matrix glycoprotein that promotes inflammatory cell migration from the interstitium to the airways. Stimulation of TNC is through cytokines from T helper 2 (Th2) cells, in addition, it proliferates within basement membranes of the airways in asthmatic patients...

The prevalence of ocular allergy is increasing worldwide. Skin prick test is widely recognized as the most reliable method for diagnosing the incriminating allergen as regards type I hypersensitivity reactions. Food allergy results as immunological response to food protein which leads to occurrence of allergic conjunctivitis (AC), allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis, and eosinophilic esophagitis. There is a scarcity of research investigating the association between food allergy and AC. Egypt has the highest rates in the Middle East region. The pathogenicity of MS involves mitochondrial function.
