Dementia is a terminal and progressive condition which often brings with it a loss of hope, and feelings of hopelessness in those living with the condition and their family carers. Community nurses are in a unique position of being able to interact with people with dementia and their family carers in their own homes, or the care settings in which they reside, and in some case, will be the only professionals with regular contact with the family. Therefore, they have the opportunity to increase feelings of hope in those they work with...

Jess Baker, Rod Vincent
Community nurses are at particular risk to compassion fatigue because their role attracts people who are compelled to help others, and because the work is emotionally challenging. This article explores the various ways in which compassion fatigue affects work and personal life, highlights three factors that make someone susceptible to it and provides recommendations on how to protect oneself from compassion fatigue. The authors also refer to their own research on super-helper syndrome to elucidate the understanding of what contributes to compassion fatigue...

As the ageing population grows and forms a significant category of over 65s in many societies, along with it comes the risk of developing physical and psychological degenerative changes. This presents many challenges for health and social care services in not only identifying those at risk but also managing that risk to try to preserve health and independence for as long as possible. Screening for frailty has supported services to identify those that may be at risk of hospitalisation, requiring long term care or support services at home in older age...

Gregor Ferguson, Fiona Baguley
This systematic literature review was carried out by a final-year nursing student in response to clinical experience, and to understand the rationale and evidence around managing venous ulcers. In the student's clinical experience, the two most commonly used treatment methods were forms of compression hosiery and compression bandaging. The CINAHL, Science Direct, Cochrane Library, Internurse and MEDLINE databases were searched for literature published over the period 2003-2023. From the resulting five papers, five key themes were identified: types of compression systems used and the rationale for decision-making; clinical effectiveness; the impact on patient experience and quality of life; pain levels following application of compression systems; and cost effectiveness...

Pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) manifests as an inflammatory skin condition typically emerging within the anal cleft. The prevalence of this disease varies in high income countries. This disease is associated with significant physical and psychosocial distress. Surgery is an option for managing PSD; yet, surgical methods vary, and a universally accepted gold standard approach is lacking, leading to current practices that are diverse and subject to ongoing debate. One such point of contention revolves around the decision to use packing or opt for a non-packing approach following surgery...

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), a specific type of massage performed by specialists that aims to enhance the filling and emptying of lymph vessels, is often recommended as an essential part of a successful management strategy for lymphoedema. However, the literature on its efficacy is often contradictory, and its addition may not always be necessary. To ensure optimal understanding of practitioners and benefit to patients, Francesca Ramadan summarises the evidence-based advantages and limitations of MLD.
