Spinal epidermoid cysts are benign tumors. Syringomyelia secondary to intramedullary tumors are frequently observed. However, the association between syringomyelia and spinal intradural extramedullary epidermoid cyst in the conus medullaris region is extremely rare. We present the case of a 3-year-old male who was admitted with paraparesis and urinary retention. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spine demonstrated intradural extramedullary lesion, compatible with epidermoid cyst, that at the conus medullaris level and a large syringomyelia extending from T4 to L1 vertebrae...

In women, pelvic actinomycosis is closely associated with prolonged use of the intrauterine devices (IUD). A 70-year old female presented with intermittent blood-stained vaginal discharge. An analysis of her history revealed, she was inserted with an IUD 42 years ago, but it has remained in situ untill now. Curettage of the uterus was done, but an IUD was firmly attached inside the cavity and there was not able to remove it. A biopsy material consisted of the large round and oval granules of filamentous and mycelium-like microorganisms...

Plants with anticancer properties are considered as cancer preventive and treatment sources, due to their some biological effects. Apoptosis induction and anti-proliferative effects of Baneh extract on various cancer cell lines have been reported. Hence, this study was designed to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of this fruit on KB and human gingival fibroblast cell lines (HGF). KB and HGF cells were treated with various concentrations of ethanolic Baneh extract and cisplatin as positive control. Cytotoxic activity and apoptosis induction were investigated using WST-1 and Annexin V assays...

INTRODUCTION: A nightstick fracture is an isolated fracture of the ulnar shaft. Although operative and non-operative treatments have been commonly decided by the degree of displacement of the fracture, still there is a controversy specially in those moderately displaced. Herein we report our experience with nightstick fractures. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate operative and non-operative treatment of nightstick fracture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical notes, physiotherapy letters and radiographs of 52 patients with isolated ulnar shaft fractures...

This article is the second part of an evaluation of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) prevalence among dental students. As the majority of complaints are in the back region, there is an endeavor to analyze objectively the disorders in this region. One of the non-invasive and non-radiation methods is the spinal curve mapping using the Spinal Mouse® device (Idiag AG, Fehraltorf, Switzerland). The aim of this study was to determine a correlation between subjectively described complaints and the results of an objective examination of the spine using the Spinal Mouse® device...

The most common benign neoplasm of the pharynx is papilloma. It is characterized by bulging brittle lesions, which are pedicled or sessile, whitish-grey or pinkish colour. Progressive hoarseness is the main clinical feature. When the papillomata spread throughout the tracheobronchial tree symptoms such as chronic cough, stridor, dyspnea or acute respiratory distress are mostly present. Hemoptysis as a presenting symptom is exceptionally rare in patients with pharyngeal papillomatosis. Herein, we report a case of pharyngeal papillomatosis in which hemoptysis was the primary clinical manifestation...

BACKGROUND/AIM: Primary hepatic leiomyosarcoma is an extremely rare type of liver sarcoma with relatively poor prognosis, with about 50 cases having been reported in the literature. Potential origins of this tumor in the liver are the smooth muscle cells in the round ligament, intrahepatic blood vessels and intrahepatic bile ducts. There is no apparent sex predilection and there is a wide age range. The clinical presentation is not specific and the diagnosis depends on the expression of markers such as smooth muscle actin, desmin and vimentin by tumor cells...

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC), one of the most aggressive malignancies, is extremely rare in childhood. We present a case of 5-yearold child who presented with rapidly progressing thyroid swelling and stridor, for which she underwent emergency tracheostomy and biopsy. Histopathological features were suggestive of ATC and the patient died within two months after diagnosis. ATC, though very rare in childhood, should be kept in the differential diagnoses of rapidly enlarging neck masses in children. To the best of our knowledge, this is the youngest case of ATC reported in literature...

BACKGROUND: Topiramate (TPM) decreases cytokine release and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Cytokine and endothelin-1 (ET-1) secretion and ROS formation play an important role in ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. We aimed to evaluate whether TPM prevents damage occurring in lung tissue during I/R. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 27 Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups of nine. To the I/R group, two hours of ischemia via infrarenal abdominal aorta cross-ligation and then two hours of reperfusion process were applied...

We examined the histological features of the mucobuccal fold of oral cavity mucous membrane from the area of the masticatory teeth roots' projection in 6-month-old Wistar Albino Glaxo rats with fetal macrosomia. The animals were divided into groups according to the body weight, the body length, and the Quetelet index at birth. A morphological study was performed using the Leica SP8 AOBS laser scanning confocal microscope and a conventional light (Axiostar, Zeiss) microscopy. Morphometric parameters were used to estimate the degree of acanthosis development in the epithelium of the oral mucosa, which indicates the intensity of its proliferation...

It is common knowledge that there are patients who have an uncomplicated cataract surgery with an actual improvement of their visual acuity, but they are dissatisfied with their final visual capacity. It is hypothesized that patients' preoperative expectations play a significant role in their postoperative perceptions. A systematic review of the recent literature regarding preoperative expectations of patients before lens extraction surgery and their postoperative perceptions as regards the visual outcome was performed based on the PubMed, Medline, Google Scholar, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Nature and Springer databases in September 2017 and data from 14 descriptive and 7 comparative studies were included in this narrative review...

Bochdalek hernia (BH) in an adult may manifest clinically with a myriad of abdominal or chest symptoms or a combination of them. Diagnosis of an adult BH is usually delayed in view of rarity of the lesion and its varied presentation. A 30-year-old adult gentleman presented to us with a left thoracostomy which was draining pus and ingested food particles. The tube thoracostomy had been performed in another hospital for an apparent left hydropneumothorax before he arrived in our hospital. Computed tomography of Chest and abdomen revealed a left diaphragmatic defect with herniation of stomach, spleen and omentum into the chest with organo-axial volvulus of the stomach...
