Young adults with childhood-onset rheumatic diseases are more frequently establishing and continuing care with adult rheumatologists. The transfer of care can be challenging for both the young adult patients and their adult rheumatologists, in large part due to differences between pediatric-onset rheumatic diseases and their adult-onset counterparts, or due to the rarity of some pediatric-onset rheumatic conditions. Other challenges are due to cultural differences between pediatric and adult medical care and to the young adult needing to increasingly perform self-management skills that were previously managed by parents or other caregivers...

INTRODUCTION: Tofacitinib, an oral Janus kinase inhibitor, is a putative choice in the treatment of axial spondyloarthritis (AxSpA). The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness and tolerability of tofacitinib with adalimumab, in AxSpA, in a real-world clinical setting. METHODS: In this multicentric medical records review study, adult patients with active AxSpA treated with either tofacitinib 5 mg twice daily or adalimumab 40 mg subcutaneously fortnightly were recruited...

OBJECTIVES: The aims were to estimate the frequency of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) in women and to analyze the clinical, laboratory, and imaging differences with respect to men at the time of diagnosis. METHODS: Consecutive patients older than 18 years with a diagnosis of axSpA were included between 2017 and 2022 admitted to the "Reuma-check" SpA program. At baseline, all patients underwent clinical assessment, laboratory tests including C-reactive protein and human leukocyte antigen B27, and imaging (plain radiography [x-ray] and magnetic resonance imaging of sacroiliac joints, and ultrasound of heel entheses)...

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: To address high blood pressure (BP) in rheumatology patients, we previously implemented BP Connect, a brief staff-driven protocol to address high BP. Although timely follow-up and hypertension rates improved for patients with in-system primary care (PC), many receive PC and rheumatology care in separate health systems. In this cohort study, we compared rates of timely PC follow-up for high BP across-system health maintenance organizations (HMOs) before and after BP Connect implementation...

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to assess whether a relationship between anti-SSA-52 and interstitial lung disease (ILD) can be further defined, and to enhance screening, detection, and potentially guide treatment. METHODS: A historical cohort study of 201 patients was conducted at a single tertiary care center between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2020. All included patients were anti-SSA-52 antibody positive. Chart review was performed for laboratory values, symptoms, pulmonary function tests, treatment, and imaging...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to examine the factors influencing the therapeutic effect of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus combined with immune thrombocytopenia (SLE-ITP) and develop a prediction model to predict the therapeutic effect of SLE-ITP. METHODS: Three hundred twenty-four SLE-ITP patients were retrieved from the electronic health record database of SLE patients in Jiangsu Province according to the latest treatment response criteria for ITP...

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research was to ascertain the effectiveness of the newly established criteria for classifying IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD), as applied to a large Chinese cohort in real-world clinical settings. METHODS: Patient data were procured from the digital health records of 4 prominent academic hospitals. The criterion standard for identifying IgG4-RD patients was from a seasoned rheumatologist. The control group consisted of individuals with other ailments such as cancer, other forms of pancreatitis, infectious diseases, and illnesses that mimic IgG4-RD...

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact of disease duration on clinical phenotypes in Chinese patients with primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS) and examine the correlation between clinical phenotypes and onset age, age at diagnosis, and disease duration. METHODS: Data from 952 patients diagnosed with pSS in China between January 2013 and March 2022 were analyzed based on medical records. Patients were categorized into 3 groups based on disease duration: short (<5 years), moderate (≥5 and <10 years), and long (≥10 years) group...

BACKGROUND: Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) is a life-threatening opportunistic infection in immunocompromised children with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Prophylaxis against PJP in high-risk children is crucial, but the risk factors for PJP in children with SLE are not adequately characterized. This study sought to identify the risk factors for PJP in long-term glucocorticoid-treated pediatric SLE patients. METHODS: This study encompassed 71 treatment episodes involving 64 children with prolonged (≥4 weeks) high-dose (≥20 mg/d prednisone) steroid regimens...

BACKGROUND: Although observational studies have revealed associations between idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) and lung cancer (LC), they have not established a causal relationship between these 2 conditions. METHODS: We used a 2-sample Mendelian randomization approach to examine the bidirectional causal associations between IIMs and LC, using single-nucleotide polymorphisms selected from high-quality genome-wide association studies in the FinnGen database...

BACKGROUND: The association between hyperuricemia and development of progressive chronic kidney disease has received increasing attention in recent years. Recent preclinical studies have shown that non-crystalline uric acid can induce renal-specific arteriolopathy, leading to renal injury and tubulointerstitial inflammation. METHODS: We conducted a open-label cross-sectional study of 25 patients with chronic kidney disease stage III (estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR], 7...
