OBJECTIVES: There is a high prevalence of burnout among rheumatologists. Grit, which is defined as possessing perseverance and a passion to achieve long-term goals, is predictive of success in many professions; however, whether grit is associated with burnout remains unclear, especially among academic rheumatologists, who have multiple simultaneous responsibilities. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the associations between grit and self-reported burnout components-professional efficacy, exhaustion, and cynicism-in academic rheumatologists...

BACKGROUND: The transition from pediatric to adult care is a critical time when adolescent patients and their families face many challenges. This period can be associated with an increase in disease-related morbidity and mortality. The aim of our study is to identify gaps in transition-related care to help guide areas for improvement. METHODS: Patients (14-19 years) with juvenile idiopathic arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus and one of their parents were recruited from the McMaster Rheumatology Transition Clinic...

OBJECTIVE: Tildrakizumab is an anti-interleukin-23p19 monoclonal antibody approved to treat moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of tildrakizumab in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, multinational trial (clinicaltrials.gov NCT02980705), patients with active AS, according to modified New York criteria and Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index Score ≥4, were randomized 1:1 to tildrakizumab 200 mg or placebo every 4 weeks until week 24...

BACKGROUND: Symmetrical involvement of the hand joints is described as characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Quantitative data on specific patterns of involvement are lacking. OBJECTIVE: The Brigham Rheumatoid Arthritis Sequential Study was created for observational studies of patients with RA and afforded a unique opportunity to answer these questions. METHODS: Of 1598 subjects in the Brigham Rheumatoid Arthritis Sequential Study cohort, 535 met the following criteria: (1) disease duration of 7 years or greater, (2) seropositive, and (3) hand radiographs available...

This manuscript demonstrates that although isolated superior mesenteric artery vasculitis that also could be called as localized vasculitis of the gastrointestinal tract was rare entity, it is so significant as differential diagnosis of abdominal pain in addition to idiopathic dissection, infective arteritis, and lymphoma. This case should remind readers to consider isolated superior mesenteric artery vasculitis as a cause of (upper) abdominal pain.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the clinical and radiological features of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) patients with acute brain infarction, using a cohort of Korean patients with AAV. METHODS: This study included 263 patients with AAV. Acute brain infarction was defined as infarction that occurred within 7 days or less. The brain territories affected by acute brain infarction were investigated. Active AAV was arbitrarily defined as the highest tertile of Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score (BVAS)...

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a multisystemic fibroinflammatory condition potentially resulting in organ dysfunction. We aimed to evaluate imaging characteristics of disease relapse and complications in this cohort of patients. METHODS: This was a cohort study of IgG4-RD patients imaged between 2010 and 2020. Radiological manifestations of disease activity (remission/stability vs. relapse and complications) were correlated with clinical symptoms...

BACKGROUND: In polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) relapses and long-term GC dependency are common. We assessed risk factors for higher relapse rate and/or prolonged glucocorticoid therapy in PMR patients. METHODS: A multicenter and observational study (chart review) of PMR patients seen between 2006 and 2021 who had at least a 3-month follow-up period after starting GCs was performed. Results were expressed as median and interquartile range 25th-75th or mean ± standard deviation for numerical variables and percentage for categorical ones...

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of chronic pain is high in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), increasing the risk for opioid use. The objective of this study was to assess disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) use and its effect on long-term opioid use in patients with RA. METHODS: This cohort study included Medicare beneficiaries with diagnosis of RA who received at least 30-day consecutive prescription of opioids in 2017 (n = 23,608). The patients were grouped into non-DMARD and DMARD users, who were further subdivided into regimens set forth by the American College of Rheumatology...

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify the predictive factors of hospital-acquired bacterial infections in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHODS: This chart review study included patients with SLE who were hospitalized between 2009 and 2020 for reasons other than infection. The outcome was defined as any infection confirmed using any bacterial isolation method or diagnosed by treating physicians and required treatment with intravenous antibiotics. For statistical analysis, logistic regression analyses were performed...

Sarcopenia is underrecognized in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Risk factors of sarcopenia and its impact on outcomes in RA patients are relatively unknown. We conducted a systematic review to identify factors and outcomes associated with sarcopenia in RA. We conducted this review according to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) 2020 guidelines. We searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Science databases by combining the following search concepts: (1) RA and (2) sarcopenia...

OBJECTIVE: Few population-based studies for Takayasu arteritis (TAK) have been performed, and Latin America prevalence/incidence data are unavailable. We aimed to understand TAK epidemiology in Rio de Janeiro City in 2020 (i.e., 6,747,815 inhabitants). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional fieldwork study where physicians who regularly followed TAK patients in public or private practices from Rio de Janeiro were invited to complete a REDCap survey. Patients should fulfill internationally accepted criteria for TAK and be living in the city...

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to study clinical and biological differences between men and women with primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS) in China and perform a literature review to confirm if the clinical phenotypes are affected by sex in patients with pSS. METHODS: Data from 961 patients with pSS treated at a tertiary hospital in China between January 2013 and March 2022 were analyzed based on medical records. Clinical characteristics, including disease manifestations and serological parameters of the disease, were compared between men and women with pSS using the Mann-Whitney U test and χ2 test...
