Iron is an essential trace element for various cellular proteins and for biological processes in all cells. Severe iron deficiency (ID) impairs haem synthesis, reduces erythropoiesis and causes iron deficiency anaemia (IDA). Iron restriction in anaemia of inflammation is mainly due to retention of iron in macrophages. This condition is known as 'functional iron deficiency'. A review of studies performed in Europe shows that the prevalence of ID and IDA in young children varies by region. It is more common in eastern than western European countries...

There are 21 human cyclin-dependent kinases which are involved in regulation of the cell cycle, transcription, RNA splicing, apoptosis and neurogenesis. Five of them: CDK4, CDK5, CDK6, CDK10 and CDK13 are associated with human phenotypes. To date, only 62 patients have been presented with mutated CDK13 gene. Those patients had developmental delay, dysmorphic facial features, feeding difficulties, different structural heart and brain defects. 36 of them had missense mutation affecting the protein kinase domain of CDK13...

INTRODUCTION: This case report describes a case of exogenous lipoid pneumonia (ELP) resulting from the inhalation of a lipoid substance. Lipoid pneumonia, also known as cholesterol pneumonia or golden pneumonia, is an uncommon inflammatory lung disease characterized by the presence of lipid-laden macrophages in the alveolar walls and lung interstitial tissue. Exogenous lipoid pneumonia occurs when substances containing lipids enter the airways through aspiration or inhalation, triggering an inflammatory response...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory skin disease involving the mucous membrane of the oral cavity. It is postulated that different factors play a role in the occurrence of the disease and may activate the immune system, thus influencing the development of lichen planus. Vitamin D is a steroid prohormone with multiple systemic effects. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess oral lichen planus against 25-hydroxy-vitamin D3 serum level...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Patella dislocation represents 3.3% of all knee injuries often leading to persistent instability. Medial patello-femoral ligament(MPFL) reconstruction is the standard method of treatment in the patellar instability. Rehabilitation after MPFL-R is a long and demanding procedure. The hypothesis presented reflects the idea that despite relatively good access to hospital care and surgical options, the post-operative rehabilitation care system is still inferior in rural areas versus the one offered in major cities and towns...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Modern mobile devices have become tools used for educational, research, business or recreational purposes. Incorrect position during excessive use of a smartphone can lead to biomechanical changes, the most visible of which is the position of the head in protraction, characterized by the protrusion of the head and neck forward in relation to the shoulder girdle and trunk. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between disability, neck pain (NP), use of phones before bedtime, and hours of using smartphones...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is one of the most important and life-threatening complications in orthopaedic surgery. According to current scientific reports, there are several variables that can affect the severity of CVD, including the site of the pathology or the type of treatment implemented. The aim of the study was to analyze the risk of VTE depending on the location of the pathology, as well as to evaluate the impact of surgical treatment compared to conservative management...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Dementia is a multifactorial neurological disease that affects 50 million people worldwide. It is a disorder that impairs cognitive functions, functional efficiency, balance and gait. It contributes to an increased risk of falls, reduces independence in everyday activities and deepens disability. The aim of the study was to investigate the correlation between dementia and independence related to functional efficiency and risk of falls in the elderly. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The eligibility criterion for participation in the study was age over 60, the presence of cognitive disorders, including dementia, and the ability to move with the use of orthopaedic equipment or independently...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Cyberchondria has been described relatively recently as a behaviour characterized by excessive Internet searching for medical information related to increasing levels of health anxiety. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) refers to a broad set of health care practices that are not part of a country's traditional or conventional medicine, and are not fully integrated into the dominant health care system The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between cyberchondria and the use of complementary and alternative medicine...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Regular monitoring of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine uptake quickly exposes immunity gaps in the population. In Poland, the first dose of the MMR vaccine is mandatory for children between 13 and 15 months of life. This study aimed to assess the uptake of the first dose of MMR vaccine in 380 administrative counties in Poland in 2020, as well as to analyze the MMR vaccine uptake trends in 2013-2016-2020. INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Proton beam therapy (PBT) provides the opportunity for a more localized delivery of high energy protons and may reduce the damage to healthy tissues and vital organs. The aim of this review was to assess the effects of proton therapy for patients diagnosed with Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma treated with mediastinal irradiation. REVIEW METHODS: A systematic search of EMBASE, MEDLINE via OVID and Cochrane Library was conducted in May 2022 according to PRISMA guidelines to identify relevant data on the efficacy and toxicity of proton beam therapy for patients diagnosed with Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Including additional compounds that disturb the energy metabolism of cancer cells in advanced cancer therapy regimens may be an approach to overcome the problem of drug resistance and the therapeutic effectiveness of classic chemotherapeutics. One of the compounds that decouple oxidative phosphorylation, and thus alter the activity of energy-producing pathways, is 2,4-DNP (2,4- dinitrophenol). OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess the ability of the 2,4-DNP to sensitize prostate cancer cells to the action of cisplatin and etoposide, or to intensify their action...

To date, the Eastern European and Western European populations of this tick species have been separated by an area located in Poland where the species has never been found. In this study, newly discovered D. reticulatus localities in areas transformed by human activities in central-southern Poland are described. INTRODUCTION: Legionella pneumophila is the primary etiological agent of Legionnaires' disease. These are opportunistic pathogens causing lung infections by inhalation of contaminated aerosols. Controlling the presence of these bacteria in domestic distribution water systems (mainly hot water systems) is important for reducing the threat they pose to human health. Legionella pathogens are detected and quantified during routine testing of water samples according to procedures included in PN-EN ISO 11731:2017...
