Mental disorders are common and have severe consequences for the patients, their relatives, and society. Mental health care planning requires precise knowledge of the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and details regarding the provided treatment. Because administrative data lack information on persons not in contact with health services, we need epidemiologic studies delivering nationwide information on the prevalence of psychiatric disorders. This requirement induces the need for adequate sampling procedures to collect reliable data, allowing for accurate estimations of mental health care needs, over- and underprovision...

BACKROUND: Emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD) has a high prevalence worldwide and especially in in-patient psychiatric settings, varying in age and gender. Due to the complex clinical picture, repeated admissions and high costs, health systems are facing great challenges. METHODS: For the calculations Statistik Austria data of inpatient stays of patients with mental and behavioral disorders with special regard to EUPD as main discharge diagnosis in Austria in the period 2001-2016 were used...

Major depressive disorder is characterized by changes in the emotional state, e. g. the diminished experience of positive emotions, as well as cognitive impairments such as concentration and memory difficulties. These emotional and cognitive dysfunctions are closely interrelated and play a key role for the development and maintenance of depressive symptoms. For instance, patients with depression show negatively biased information processing that affects attention and memory as well as their reaction to feedback...

BACKGROUND: Obesity and anxiety are the two most common health problems and increased body mass index can be lead to anxiety. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this meta-analysis was to investigate the frequency of anxiety symptoms in people who are obese/overweight. METHODS: For this purpose the authors systematically searched keywords in the databases PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO and Google scholar through August 2018. After a comprehensive review, 25 studies were included into the meta-analysis...

BACKGROUND: Migraines have adverse psychological consequences, one of which is the tendency towards depression. This study aimed to investigate the effects of migraine on adults' depression in the form of a systematic review and meta-analysis METHODS: Several scientific databases were searched using relevant keywords until the end of January 2018. After reviewing the titles and abstracts and the full texts, the researchers eventually included 16 eligible articles. Major and sub-group analyses were carried out using random effects...

Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis (anti-NMDAR encephalitis) is a rare and recently discovered disease. Affected patients are initially often referred to psychiatric departments due to prominent neuropsychiatric symptoms. We present the course of the illness of an 18-year-old female patient, who was primarily and for the first time admitted to the 1. Psychiatric Department of the Otto Wagner Hospital Vienna due to a psychotic disorder. With fluctuating clinical course, further diagnostics were performed and the patient was diagnosed with anti-NMDAR encephalitis...

BACKGROUND: Given three person families the Subjective Family Image Test assesses the six dyadic relations on a valence and potency dimensions. Besides the total sum score (developmental conditions in the family) other aggregate scores are unsettled. METHODS: Data of 461 patients with eating disorders was reanalysed in order to clarify which aggregate scores are comprehensive. Structural equation analysis followed the family social relations model. RESULTS: Eight further latent variables with sufficient variance in the lay psychology of the patients were identified: at the valence dimension the three reciprocal dyads and the parents as two dispositional sources, at the potency dimension a dispositional source for each family member with complementarity for the parents (e...

In a qualitative study using thematic analysis of focus group interviews with service users their perspectives and experiences concerning the process of seeking admission to psychiatric inpatient care in Austria were explored. The aim of the study was to better understand service users' motivation, decisions and actions in the process of seeking psychiatric hospitalisation. Results show that admission to psychiatric inpatient care was often sought directly without a referral from an outpatient service. An important motivation was the lack of availability of alternatives to inpatient care in situations of a severe acute crisis...

Personality and dementia are connected in different ways. A broad knowledge about personality and prodromal stages of dementia might be helpful to identify dementia as early as possible. Hence, personality differences between three cognitively impaired groups on the basis of patients' self-assessments of personality traits and connections between personality and cognitive functioning were examined via a cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of cognitively impaired patients (N = 133), aged 50 and older, who came to a memory clinic due to cognitive complaints...

OBJECTIVE: Since previous meta-analyses of psychiatric-psychosomatic rehabilitation only rarely included studies from Austrian rehabilitation clinics a systematic review with meta-analysis of previously available evaluation results from Austrian rehabilitation clinics should be conducted. METHODS: A systematic literature search in several data bases (Psyndex, PsycInfo, MEDLINE, Pubmed) and additional manual search was conducted. Evaluation results from the most commonly used assessment instruments (SCL-90/BSI, BDI, WHOQOL-BREF, GAF) were extracted from the studies included and subsequently a meta-analysis was calculated with the extracted data (pre-post comparison)...

BACKGROUND: Beliefs about voices are a determining factor with regards to distress, coping and therapeutic interventions in verbal auditory hallucinations. Aim of the present study was to use and validate the internationally well established Beliefs About Voices Questionnaire-Revised (BAVQ-R) in a German translation with people suffering from schizophrenic psychoses. METHODS: 93 participants with a diagnosis of schizophrenia and current verbal auditory hallucinations completed the BAVQ-R autonomously for their dominant voice...

This article is reporting about a spontaneous occurred catatonic syndrome in a 52 years old female patients with no prior psychiatric illness record. The catatonia followed a severe depressive episode with psychotic symptoms. At the beginning additionally to the catatonic-symptoms severe disorientation and memory disturbances were prominent in a way it can be seen in neurodegenerative diseases like Lewy-Body-Dementia and Creutzfeldt-Jacob-Disease. The patient didn't respond on any medication or showed severe side-effects which led to discontinue the medication...
