Approximately 95% of cervical squamous cell carcinomas are associated with high-risk HPV, with a small number of HPV-independent tumors. However, low-risk HPV types have also been detected in rare cervical squamous cell carcinomas. Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion-related changes are a rare morphologic finding in cervical squamous cell carcinoma. We present the case of a 30-yr-old woman who presented with pelvic pain and foul-smelling vaginal discharge showing an exophytic lesion protruding from the cervix...

Medical institutions continuously create a substantial amount of data that is used for scientific research. One of the departments with a great amount of archived data is the pathology department. Pathology archives hold the potential to create a case series of valuable rare entities or large cohorts of common entities. The major problem in creation of these databases is data extraction which is still commonly done manually and is highly laborious and error prone. For these reasons, we offer using large language models to overcome these challenges...

OBJECTIVE: A few studies indicate that human papillomavirus (HPV) induces aberrant expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) and correlate this with p16INK4a in oral dysplasia (OD) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the expression of miRNA-21, miRNA-22, and miRNA-224 by q-PCR and the p16 INK4a by immunohistochemical (IHC) as markers for HPV-positive OSCC and OD in comparison to controls as miRNA expression can be altered by the HPV oncogenes and hence can be used as a biomarker for HPV positive cases...

OBJECTIVE: The classification of renal tumors is expanding with the addition of new molecular entities in the 5th World Health Organization classification. Apart from this, the major updates in the definition of papillary renal cell carcinoma are that these tumors are no longer subtyped into type 1 and type 2. In oncocytic tumors, the new molecularly defined renal tumors, emerging and novel entities need to be considered in the diagnosis of oncocytic and chromophobe renal tumors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study to review and reclassify papillary, oncocytic, and chromophobe renal tumors based on the new WHO classification and correlate with clinical data, gross, microscopic features, and immunohistochemistry markers...

OBJECTIVE: Nasal glioma, also known as nasal glial heterotopia, is a rare tumor-like lesion that often affects newborns or infants with no hereditary predisposition. CASE REPORT: A 4-year-old child with a growth on the nasal dorsum since birth was diagnosed with nasal glial heterotopia/nasal glioma. The lesion showed a sclerotic fibroma/collagenoma-like storiform pattern with entrapped glial tissue that was S100 and GFAP positive. CONCLUSION: When a biopsy of the nasal dorsum demonstrates sclerotic microscopic findings with a storiform pattern, nasal glioma should be considered before making a diagnosis in the collagen-rich tissue spectrum (collagenoma or Gardner's fibroma), and an immunohistochemical panel should be requested to demonstrate the presence of an unrecognized light microscopically visible glial component...

OBJECTIVE: Abdominal wall masses often pose diagnostic challenges for clinicians due to their nonspecific symptoms. They include a wide spectrum of lesions ranging from inflammatory to tumor-like masses and malignancies. The majority of the malignant nodules are metastatic in origin and may be the initial presentation of a primary malignancy; hence, an early diagnosis is important. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a valuable diagnostic tool in the evaluation of such lesions. This was a retrospective study of the cytomorphological spectrum of abdominal wall masses, conducted at a tertiary health care centre over a three-year period...

OBJECTIVE: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the urinary bladder is associated with aggressive behavior and is typically treated with radical cystectomy. Vitamin D receptor (VDR) and its ligand Calcitriol have shown anti-tumor effects in various malignancies but to our knowledge there is no current information on VDR expression in bladder SCC. This study aimed to assess VDR immunostaining patterns in pure bladder SCC and its relation to the available clinicopathological parameters of such tumors...

Pulmonary blastoma (PB) is an exceedingly rare and aggressive malignant lung neoplasm that has distinct biphasic morphology. In this report, we document rare manifestations and molecular alterations in PB. A 59-year-old non-smoker female, presented with cough and hemoptysis for 4 months. The high-resolution computed tomography chest scan showed a 3.5x2.7 cm mass in the basal segment of the left lung. Positron emission tomography and computed tomography revealed a fluorodeoxyglucose avid lobulated mass in the superior segment of the lower lobe of the left lung...

OBJECTIVE: Diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for malignant melanoma are crucial for treatment and for developing targeted therapies. Malignant melanoma is a highly immunogenic tumor, and its regression, treatment, and prognostic evaluation are directly related to escape from immune destruction. Therefore, we aimed to determine the expression levels of CD80, CD86, and PD -L1 in malignant melanoma tissue samples by immunohistochemistry and to investigate the possible relationship between these proteins and the clinicopathological features in this study...

OBJECTIVE: Immune checkpoint inhibitors are used in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) immunohistochemistry (IHC) assessed by pathologists is subject to interobserver variability. In advanced/metastatic disease and inoperable patients, PD-L1 assessment relies on biopsy specimens, commonly needle core biopsies (NCB). We aimed to determine the interobserver agreement for PD-L1 tumor proportion score (TPS) in NSCLC NCBs and identify histopathological features that may be related to interobserver variability...

Digital papillary adenocarcinoma (DPA) is a rare malignant eccrine tumor. A 62-year-old female presented with a subcutaneous nodular 1.5cm-mass in the thumb. Macroscopically, a poorly circumscribed mass containing cystic and solid components was observed. Microscopically, epithelial neoplasm consisting of tubular-cystic structures with back-to-back arrangements was observed. The lining epithelium was composed of cuboidal/columnar cells with mild atypia, with micropapillary extensions. Immunohistochemistry revealed double-layered neoplastic epithelium containing two different types of cells: basaloid/myoepithelial and luminal...

Cardiac amyloidosis is a type of amyloidosis that deserves special attention as organ involvement significantly worsens the prognosis. Cardiac amyloidosis can be grouped under three main headings: immunoglobulin light chain (AL) amyloidosis that is dependent on amyloidogenic monoclonal light chain production; hereditary Transthyretin (TTR) amyloidosis that results from accumulation of mutated TTR; and wild-type (non-hereditary) TTR amyloidosis formerly known as senile amyloidosis. Although all three types cause morbidity and mortality due to severe heart failure when untreated, they contain differences in their pathogenesis, clinical findings, and treatment...

OBJECTIVE: The gold-standard method for assessment of autoimmune bullous disease is direct/indirect immunofluorescence (IF) examination applied to fresh frozen tissue. Since the sensitivity of IF is greatly reduced in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues, IF cannot be relied upon in these samples. However, immunohistochemistry with the C4d antibody is a promising marker used as a surrogate for immune complex deposition, in nephropathology practice, and the paraffin IF method is also used as a "salvage" technique when fresh frozen tissue is not available or lacks glomeruli...
